Mirror Lake 2 The Journey to Save the Magic
Chapter 7 The Water Kingdom Dome

Ethan POV

It took us an hour and a half to wait in line just to get onto the ferry. We considered leaving our Jeep and just walking on, but Orcas Island would be much easier to navigate with a vehicle, so we took the Jeep. Luckily we picked up some snacks to munch on while waiting in the Jeep.

But I got restless as Nate and we both decided to have a short walk around while waiting for our ferry to show up.

It’s beautiful here. I love the smell of the ocean. Even the annoying as heck seagulls were pretty to watch over the water… Just don’t feed them or they attack!

Finally we were able to board the ferry. We decided to ditch the Jeep and go up top and watch from the upper deck.

Surprisingly, it was a clear day today. Not a cloud in sight. It was beautiful, but even so with autumn creeping in and the spray of the water hitting my face, we did get kinda chilly. I decided to take pictures of us so we could send them to Lissa and Becky. Hopefully that would let them know we are okay and that we were thinking of them… Plus the shots were awesome!

It was nice that the water wasn’t choppy today, I tend to get seasick fast. But to be honest, the gentle rock of the boat was soothing, and if I had been here for other reasons, like maybe sightseeing, I’d totally have just relaxed. But that wasn't why we were here.

After an hour or so, we finally disembarked the ferry and set off.

We pass the cute little tourist towns with all the local shops and diners that bring all the people from the mainland onto the island.

I got out the compass and placed it on the dash and watched as it spun. We weave through the island and end up on a beach called Obstruction Pass State Park. By some miracle, the dome is right on the water. Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the FindNʘᴠᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Huh… How’d they do that?

Also, this is a pretty popular place, how do people just go around the dome and not see it? Maybe you can only see it if you have magic?

“Now what?” I asked.

Nate sighed and shook his head, looking around.

Then points to a small boat anchored out in the water near a dock, but not close enough to the dock to use it to get onto.

“There!” Nate stated with such certainty that I had no doubt that he was right.

How else would a warden watch a dome on the water?

“Kay, so we found the dome. Check! And we found the warden’s hideout. Double check. Now the big question is, how the heck are we supposed to get over there?” I grumbled out.

Nate just smirks. There is a twinkle in his eye that says I’m in for a new trick! I love it when that happens. It means I get to learn new magic, and I love learning new things! Especially magic!

“Show me!” I demanded.

He chuckled in amusement. This guy loves it when I’m excited to learn new things. He is an excellent teacher! Maybe when we get home he can get a job as a teacher or something…. Then again, he doesn't really need it. He is married to the Queen of Fairies, not to mention we have more money than we could use in three lifetimes! So, maybe he will just teach all us young folks who’ve never had the chance to use magic! That works too.

“Okay, so what I am going to teach you is a sort of magical bridge. Hold out your hands like this,” he started to show me and I followed him exactly.

“Now, focus on the magic deep in your core and pull it through your fingertips,” he explains and suddenly electricity jumps from each of his fingertips.

I focus inward and find a strong thread of magic and pull it up through my fingertips and suddenly my hands are on fire. It is wicked cool!

I smirk as I look over to Nate, who nodded his head in approval.

“Now, think of a bridge… basically made of energy. Picture what a bridge would look like made out of your fire and push that thought through your fingers,” he said as he showed me while making a bridge out of lightning. His was almost transparent with a purple glow. It was so cool!

I had to try that! I focused on what a bridge made out of fire would look like and I pushed it out to the boat.

It was amazing! The reds and yellows flickering up creating a semi-solid bridge.

I looked over to Nate.

He smiled and walked onto his bridge like he didn’t have a care in the world, so I followed suit and entered my bridge. It was narrow, kinda like a balance beam, but hey! It was my first time making a bridge out of fire! Cut me some slack. Also, it worked just fine and as long as I watched where my feet went, I wouldn’t trip and fall off into the water!

We both jump off our bridges at same time, rocking the small boat.

A shriek comes from inside the cabin and the door slams open.

Lo and behold, Brittany, the pirate/hippy chick comes out glaring at us.

“How’d ya find me?” she growled.

“Now, now Brittany. That’s no way to greet an old friend,” teased Nate.

“Friend? Ha! You stole Ben’s power, and then you killed Jack!” she argued.

“I always hated Ben, and my entire mission was to kill Jack… I figured you would have figured that out by now!” he returned easily.

“Why couldn’t you just follow Jack? It would have been so easy! We could have stayed in the little camp by the lake forever, but now I’ve gotta stay here and guard the freaking water kingdom dome!” she shouted.

“Well, I got a better idea,” I cut in. “Why don’t you just hand us over the key and leave? Then you won’t have to guard it any more and can go and do whatever it is you really want to do? No one will boss you around!”

“As much as that sounds like the best idea I’ve ever heard, I gave a blood oath to Jack. I can’t leave my post!” complained Brittany.

“You can’t just hand over the key and turn the other way?” I asked nicely.

“No! I have to defend it or I will die,” she explained.

Nate sighed. “I was afraid of that. Okay, so the hard way it is!”

Literally in a flash of lightning, Nate arched his sword and brought it down on her. I thought he was going to decapitate her! But actually he just cut through her blouse and sliced her necklace in half.

While she was distracted pulling her sword out to fight Nate, I dove for the key.

Now to find the key hole.

I grabbed the compass again and opened it. It spun around and around, not stopping.

Huh… That doesn’t really happen.

Then I got an idea and looked over the edge of the boat.

Dang, I’m good!

Right under me was a group of mushrooms that Lissa likes to call “Todds.” I just shake my head at my sister's crazy antics.

I guess it looks like I’m going swimming!

I pull myself up to the edge of the boat and look back over my shoulder. Brittany is still fighting Nate, but he sends me a secret wink, letting me know he knows what I’m doing. I just nodded my head, faced forward and took a deep breath.

Then pushed myself over the edge.

It took me like two seconds to make it to the bottom and shove the key into the hole. I turned the key and there is a sonic wave that cracks through the water.

I pushed myself up to the surface as fast as possible and looked around.

Bubbles rose to the surface of the water along with a leviathan, water nymphs, mermaids, and sirens. I swear I even saw a kraken! That thing was huge!

I turn around and find Nate had incapacitated Brittany, but she was not hurt.

She looked grumpy, to be honest.

“Now you don’t have to watch over the dome, Brittany,” I said. “You should be thanking me! And Nate because he didn’t kill you like he did with Jen!”

Brittany paled.

“You killed her?” she whispered.

“Take my advice. Take your freedom and leave. If you come back, I will take that as a direct threat to Mother Earth and all her children,” warned Nate.

Brittany just nodded her head and turned away.

“You ready to get back to the mainland?” Nate asked.

“You bet!” I answered and swam back to the dock.

I met Nate by the Jeep and we both climbed in.

Nate laughed and showed me another neat trick. I took my fire and turned it into heat and dried myself off in like 5 seconds! I love magic!
