Silence hung heavy between them in the elevator.

Finally, it was Sullivan who broke 1, “Why DIY in the pharmacy? How about the birth control pills from Lowry Group.”

With a touch of self–mockery. Megan replied, “What’s the difference? They’re all birth control pills.”

She looked at him, her tone nonchalant as she asked, “Why follow me down? Don’t you have a lover to keep company? Cressida seemed to really need you”

Sullivan’s eyes darkened. He scrutinized her face, searching for a clue in her expression.

After a long moment, he shifted his gaze to the mirror to straighten his tie and adjust his tie clip. Their eyes met in the reflection, and then in a seemingly offhand manner, he asked, “What about you, Mrs. Lowry? Don’t you need my company?”

Megan didn’t look away. She met his eyes and said coolly, “No, thanks. All I need is the title as Mrs. Lowry”

Clearly, this claim struck a nerve with Sullivan.

After a long stare, his voice tumed icy. “Then I suppose I should be grateful for Mrs. Lowry’s magnanimity.”

They parted on less than amicable terms.

As Sullivan rode back up in the elevator, he couldn’t resist ripping off the tie clip that had brought him joy earlier, along with the tie and doing that, he accidentally pricked his finger.

It only soured his mood further.

Bianca, observing his stormy face, guessed he had hit a snag with Megan and wisely chose not to provoke him.

Cressida had the sense to stay out of it.

But Dahlia, thinking she was being clever, assumed Sullivan was more concerned about her daughter. She brazenly suggested, “Mr. Lowry, even though you and Cressida don’t have the title of husband and wife, there are many things she…

“Mom!” Cressida’s face flushed with embarrassment. She knew all too well that Sullivan held no romantic feelings for her; his expressions were always indifferent.

But the way he looked at Mrs. Lowry was the way a man desires a woman.

Cressida felt like crying!

Dahlia clammed up, carefully watching Sullivan’s mood. He was clearly imitated and stemnly told Bianca, “From now on, tighten strings on the Baldwin family’s finances.”

Cressida went pale.

In the past two years, thanks to Sullivan’s indulgence, the Baldwin family had lived lavishly

As the saying goes, it’s easy to go from frugality to luxury, but difficult to reverse. If Sullivan really clamped down, there would be tough times ahead for the Baldwin family, Cressida couldn’t help but think of Megan’s designer clothes and the limited edition handbag she carried, which she had read were worth a small fortune

Feeling the sting of injustice, she trembled and said, “Mr. Lowry, my mother didn’t mean to…”

Sullivan replied coldly, “I don’t want a repeat of this!” And with that, he left with Blanca in tow

His visit had been to check on a new medication for Cressida at the hospital, not to reignite unpleasantness with Megan.

Dahlia was still shaking after Sullivan took his leave

Cressida cried out in frustration, “Mom, why did you provoke her? See how cold Mr. Lowry is to me now!”

In the evening. Sullivan drove back to his

estate.

The black Bentley pulled into the villa’s driveway.

After extinguishing the engine, Sullivan lit a cigarette before stepping out of the car. He felt off, maybe the AC in the conference room had been too high, and he was running a fever.

Entering the grand foyer, he inquired of the housekeeper, “Where’s Mrs. Lowry?”

The housekeeper took his coat and answered with eagerness, “Mrs. Lowry returned this afternoon and might be napping now.” Napping?

Sullivan checked the time and scoffed lightly. He made his way upstairs, not feeling as sprightly as usual.

Upon reaching the second floor, he pushed open the door to the main bedroom.

Megan, having woken from her nap, was lounging on a ant by the floor to ceiling windows, engrossed in a book. She looked utterly relaxed, which only irked Sullivan further, considering she seemed unfazed by their earlier spat.

He undid the top two buttons of his shirt and approached her

Megan looked up at him

Sullivan leaned casually against the other end of the sofa, his head tilted back, eyes closed

His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly. He was a handsome man, and in the twilight, the scene was almost picturesque

Megan stole a few glances, thinking to herself that he really had the looks–that’s why Cressida hung on so desperately.
