"Mom, what are you doing here?" Spencer asks and runs over to her mother. Maura, Spencer's mom, pulls her daughter in for a long hug.

"It's nice to see you as well honey." Maura laughs. I swear I see tears in Spencer's eyes but she buries her face in her mom's shoulder. She's making sniffling sounds so I'm almost certain she's crying. Spencer never cries. Sarah pulls me away and we both head to the kitchen to leave Spencer and her mom to their privacy.

"I'm sorry if you were worried about us Sarah." I said as soon as I sat down on a stool.

"Spencer just wanted to treat me in advance for my birthday. Did you call her mom?" I ask.

"No dear. She stopped by, and believe it or not we were both very worried. You guys were gone for so long, and we had no idea where you were." Sarah tells me.

She sets on a kettle to make tea for Spencer, Maura, me and herself, I assume. Suddenly my mind runs on Liam. I haven't seen him for almost the entire day and I am kinda disappointed that he isn't worried about where I was the entire time.

"Where's Liam?" I ask Sarah.

"He's up at his office." She replies over her shoulder while sweetening the tea with sugar cubes.

"Oh." I tell Sarah I'm going upstairs and leave the kitchen. I enter my room and drop on my bed. My feet are killing me and my head is pounding. I could really use a nice warm bath right now but I am too lazy to get up. I wonder why Maura stopped by, not that she isn't suppose to come and see her daughter but I am still curious. A knock at the door pulls me out of my thoughts and I tell the person to come in.

I expect it to be Liam but instead it is my best friend. "Oh, it's you." I tease.

Spencer's demeanor has changed and my tone shifts slightly from tired to worried.

"What's wrong? Please don't tell me someone else has died; I can't take anymore news of people who have died." I tell Spencer.

"No one died. Ironically, it's someone who has returned I want to tell you about. My father." Spencer says to my surprise.

"As in your... Dad?" I ask and she nods.

Now I know why Spencer looks the way she does now. She didn't really grow up with her dad, he left when she was little. I distinctly remember five year old Spencer crying because her dad left her and Maura to run off with the waitress from the town's diner. It wasme who comforted her as she bawled her eyes out under the piano that stood in the corner of our kindergarten class room.

"Yup. He's back in town. And not only that but he wants to see me and my mom." Spencer says. "Mom and I have talked about it.. and-"

"Are you going to let him come visit you guys?" I ask cautiously.

"Well.. umm, the thing is that..... Yes." She finally answers to my shock.

I didn't expect Spencer to agree all of a sudden to allow her dad to come visit her and Maura and to say I'm surprised is a huge understatement. I have nothing against her dad but he left them for another woman and the worst thing is he did not support Spencer at all. He wasn't at her birthday parties, he was at her elementary school graduation and he wasn't at prom. He hasn't been in her life for so long but it's now that he has the audacity to show up?

"I didn't want to tell you and spoil your birthday but Mom insisted that I talk to you about it." She hesitates for a while. "Do you think I should go?" She asks and I scan my brain for a reasonable answer. Spencer is the person I am looking out for here, and Maura as well. This man has left Spencer mentally traumatized and with trust issues and I don't think Spencer should be seeing him. What if he damages her already broken heart? But on the other hand, what if he has changed?

"I'm your bestfriend and I obviously want what's best for you. And in all honesty I think if you want to see him then you should. If you want to get to know your father, if you think that that's the right thing to do then I am behind you one hundred percent." I say to her.

Spencer squeals. "I'm so lucky to have you as my bestfriend."

"You sure are." I grin. We both pull each other for a long warm hug and I squeeze my bestfriend tight. She finally pulls away.

"You'd better take a shower and get downstairs." Spencer sniffs the air. "I'm sure Sarah is down there cooking us dinner and I'm positive my mom wants to see you."
