My Luna Mate
Chapter Twenty-Two

LYRA

"What's going on?" I asked as I pulled myself out of the bed.

Alexander rushed over to me, without uttering another word, he snaked his arm behind my back and pulled me in to his arms.

"I'm going to have to ask you to retreat to the underground," he told me, his voice hard. "I don't have time to explain everything but Jaxon is on his way to get you now."

I pulled back and frowned at my mate. "I'm not going anywhere without you," I argued.

Alexander shook his head, before taking my hands in his and raising it to his mouth. "Baby, no. I am not risking the chances of you getting hurt. The doctor said you needed to rest, which is exactly what you will be doing."

"Alexander, don't do this."

My mate pecked my hands, his breath fanning my skin. I could see the struggle he was having with his wolf by the look in his eyes. The colour in them kept alternating between black and his usual blue ones. His wolf was at bay and ready to dominate.

"Lyra, I wish I didn't have to. I can't protect you if you come with me."

"I can protect myself," I reminded him. I was an Alpha's daughter. "You know that I can. I am an Alpha too."

Alexander nodded. "I know, baby, but I won't risk my chances. Jaxon is coming and that is final. As soon as I have cleared our territory, I will come and find you."

Crossing my arms, I glared at him. But Alexander only snaked his arms around me and held me close in his arms. He was murmuring affectionate words in to my ear, but concern was all I could feel.

Too much was happening at once, and I couldn't help but frown in fear of the unknown.

"I will be up here if you need me," Alexander reminded me, tapping his index gently on my temple. "If you feel scared, all you have to do is send me a message. Baby, I am not going anywhere."

Nodding, I swallowed hard. "Okay, but please be careful."

"Don't worry about me," he reassured. "You just have to take care of yourself for me, alright?"

I barely had a chance to nod before the door to our bedroom swung open, revealing a rather exhausted-looking Jaxon.

"Lyr," my best friend yelled, panting. "There you are."

Alexander's jaw tensed, and at first he didn't pay any attention to the boy at the door. Instead, he embraced me even more tightly, inhaling my scent as his head nestled in my neck.

I snaked my arms around his neck, inhaling as much of his musky scent as I could myself. I wanted to fight rogues along side my mate, but I remembered our pup and didn't want to risk hurting the baby.

Alexander still didn't know about the pup and it was a bad timing for me to tell him, so instead, I rested in to his chest. I would tell him after the chaos that was unfolding right now.

When Alexander pulled away from the embrace, I glanced up at him, glad to see his eyes were almost their normal blue colour again. He leaned down and pecked my head a couple of times.

"I love you," he murmured, lowly, in to my hair, before pulling away completely. "Jaxon, take care of my girl."

My best friend nodded once before tugging at my hand and guided us out of there, making my hand drop from Alexander's touch in the process.

I glanced at my mate with pained eyes, praying that he would return back to me unharmed. It always concerned me when rogues attacked, but this time felt different and I couldn't understand if that was because of my pregnancy hormones or something else.

My mate vanished out of my sight, but not even a second later, he was already in my mind.

'I promise I will be with you as soon as I can.'

When Alexander entered my mind, I shut my eyes tightly, appreciating how good his voice sounded in my head. It calmed every cell in my body.

'I love you,' I quickly responded back to him, as a single tear trailed down my cheek.

When we entered the protection underground, Ava and Zynthéa were waiting for me. The pair of girls rushed over to me and engulfed me in their arms when they noticed me.

"Oh, Lyra," Zynthéa cooed, hugging me tightly.

"I'm glad you're here," Ava commented, leaning her head against mine.

"What's happening?" I asked when the three of us pulled apart.

Zynthéa frowned. "All I know is that about six rogues attacked shortly after everyone left our territory."

"The rogues took advantage of the open gates," Jaxon added, looking furious. "I will be outside guarding this place. If anything happens, just shout for me."

I didn't have time to respond when Jaxon disappeared up the stairs, leaving me alone with the girls.

I could hear murmurs and screams echo in the underground, only now realising that I wasn't alone with the pair by my side.

By the sound of it, all the women and children from the pack were here. But as their Luna, I was in isolation to them, so I couldn't see them.

"Are you okay?" Zynthéa asked, bringing my focus on her as she reached her hand out to me with a bottle of water. "I'm still on water duty."

Despite the chaos unfolding, I cracked a smile as I took the bottle from her hand. Alexander didn't even know that I was pregnant, and yet took my hydration status so seriously. I felt in awe.

He really was the best mate that I could have asked for, despite how tough our past couple of days had been.

"Thank you, Théa," I mumbled, before removing the lid from the bottle and gulped down as much as I could.

"So, did you talk to my brother?" she questioned, curiously. "You know, about the pup."

"What pup?" Ava intervened, narrowing her eyes as she glanced between Zynthéa and I.

Screwing the lid of the bottle back on, I bit my lip as I turned to my best friend. "That's what I wanted to tell you at the dinner earlier," I reminded her. "Ave, I think I'm pregnant."

Ava's eyes looked like they were going to pull out of their socket and both of her hands flew to cover her mouth in shock. It took her a good second before her eyes travelled down to my stomach, as if she was already expecting to see a bump.

"Oh, my God," she beamed, before rushing to attack me in an embrace. "You're going to be a mom! Oh, Lyra, I'm so happy for you!"

When I realised the girl was already crying, I wrapped my arms around her and tried to console her, that was until I realised I was crying along with her.

"We can talk about this later," I told Ava once I had composed myself and pulled back from the embrace, realising right now wasn't the best time for us to discuss this.

The auburn haired girl sniffled as she wiped at her cheeks, nodding in the process. "Of course. I just can't believe it! Congratulations, Lyra. You're going to make the best mother," she cooed, embracing me quickly once again.

I smiled at her, appreciating having her by my side all these years. She had seen my cry for various reasons, and supported me through every stage in my life. I was so lucky to have her. She really was my sister.

I couldn't ponder on the thought for too long when a commotion erupted in the underground, making me frown as I eyed the pair of girls by my side in a panic.
