The afternoon sun was blinding. Samantha had changed into more formal attire and got into Alexis‘ car.
Upon sitting in the passenger seat, Samantha quickly noticed a figure at the end of the alley through the side mirror.
“Kendrick’s still suspicious of me.”
Samantha chuckled, acknowledging Kendrick’s keen intuition.
“I can shake him off easily.” Alexis patted the steering wheel.
Memories of Kendrick’s scrutiny of Samantha were still fresh in her mind. Besides, Alexis never really liked Kendrick to begin with.
The feeling of being followed now only added to the discomfort.
“Let’s go to the florist.”
Samantha shook her head. She took her eyes off the mirror and sat down quietly.
As expected, Kendrick didn’t trust anyone around him easily.
The flower shop downtown had a unique charm. It was filled with various blooming flowers and a few customers who carefully made their selections.
Samantha was no exception.
“Miss, these carnations are a wonderful choice for your mother,” the clerk recommended enthusiastically.
Samantha accepted the recommendation and had the clerk wrap them for her.
As she stood in the store, Samantha couldn’t resist looking at the other flowers.
She soon noticed the pink champagne roses.
She thought of the romantic and leisurely manner and involuntarily reached for

“It seems Ms. Meadows likes these flowers as well,” a familiar voice interrupted.
A suit–clad Conrad stood beside her. He picked up the nearest pink champagne rose and twirled it between his fingers.
He examined it lazily, then placed it in Samantha’s hand.

Samantha was unsure if Conrad was complimenting the beautiful champagne roses. or herself.
She returned the rose to its original position with a graceful smile.
“Mr. Hayes, what a coincidence.”
This is a flower shop I frequent Conrad smiled.
There was a hint of playfulness in his eyes as he looked at Samantha.
“Oh, it seems Mr. Hayes has a fondness for these roses as well,” Samantha said.
Samantha tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and lifted her head slightly to look
at Conrad.
“Not really. I just came to this store to buy roses.
Conrad looked at the shopkeeper. His smile was replaced with a cold expression.
Left with nothing to say after Conrad’s comment Samantha once again confirmed that this man was indeed strange.
The clerk seemed accustomed to Conrad s mans. He personally selected a bouquet
of roses and brought it to the counter for wrapping.
“Miss, here are your flowers.”
Soon, the neatly wrapped carnations were in Samantha’s arms.
“Thank you.”
Samantha smiled as she prepared to leave, but Conrad was one step ahead of her.

“Ms. Meadows, Kendrick isn’t the right match for you,” Conrad remarked.
Samantha was caught off guard by Conrad’s words, but she reacted quickly.
His words weren’t a compliment to her talents but an invitation.

“Intuition.” Conrad put his hand to his chin.
As quickly as he had stopped her, Conrad quickly moved out of Samantha’s way, allowing her to pass.
She held the flowers and got into Alexis‘ car. She was still puzzled by Conrad’s actions.
“Do you know Conrad?” Samantha asked once they were in the car.
Alexis shook her head. “What about him?”
“Nothing, just curious,” Samantha replied.
Samantha watched as Conrad left the florist’s with the roses. She moved her face
closer to the flowers as her eyes sparkled with excitement.
Alexis had gotten the best room and facilities for Harry.
Harry lay on the hospital bed with his eyes closed tightly.
Numerous medical devices were hidden beneath his loose hospital gown. If it
weren’t for the faint breathing and the changing numbers on the machines, there
would be no signs of life in the room.
Samantha stood by the bed, unable to move a muscle.
Evelyn, who had visibly aged, rose from her seat when she saw Alexis. The once elegant and graceful woman now exuded only kindness and motherly love.
“Alexis, you’re here…” Evelyn quickly noticed the presence of a familiar woman
behind Alexis.

“Oh, she’s…”
“Hello, Mrs. Duncan. I’m Sophia, a student you sponsored in the past,” Samantha said as she handed her the carnations.

“It’s okay. You seem to be doing well now. I guess we didn’t make a mistake by sponsoring you back then,” Evelyn said, lightly patting Samantha’s shoulder with a gentle smile.
