Chapter 26 ~ Our Right to Exist

Adrianna’s POV ~

The time has come to sit down with the new administration. The President is Thomas Evans. His mate is a witch, ironically enough.. even though he is human. Simon is actually the new Secretary of Defense. Which will be helpful to our species.

The treaty was presented and was met with mixed reviews. We had laid out our provisions in no uncertain terms.

We governed ourselves. Any crime by a human, against any of our kind, was answerable to our jurisdiction. We wouldn’t interfere in human affairs, unless it directly affected our species in any way. The treaty would be broken. Any further testing of our kind.. the treaty is void.. Any aggression towards us will be seen as act of war, and we won’t tolerate it again.

The President wanted to add that Draco had to change terminally ill children. Dad shot that down in a hurry. Evander told him “Those are our provisions.. we are the only ones with provisions. You lost the right when your government attacked us. Either sign the treaty.. or don’t. Either way, we will continue to govern ourselves..”

I am definitely not mated to Mr. Congeniality. He gets snarky when his word is questioned.. Just like the arrogant Alpha he was raised to be. It always makes me laugh when he becomes the big tough guy!

The president asked if we would allow our people to join the human military and I responded “That has always been our policy. Our people have served in your military for as long as your militia has been in existence. That needn’t change.”

He nodded, then looked at Dad “I didn’t mean to offend you, King Draco. My niece is terminally ill.. and I thought if I put the all children in there it may sway you.”

Dad sat quietly for a minute.. then said “Send me her file. I will run it by my advisors. I can’t promise anything.. but I promise to consider it.”

I am relieved that everything seemed to be smoothing over. Hopefully, we can get through this and then we are home free for good! Or, at least, until some new catastrophe happens! It feels like that has become our life.

Mom moved over to finalize everything for the treaty to be signed and sealed. She stood after ot was signed, and read the entire thing to everyone there. Some smartass in the back yelled out “Yeah, well, what happens if a human turned out to be mated to a super?”

Dad smiled and took the treaty.. pushed his ring into a dollop of wax.. putting the seal of the dragon on the document. Then the president did the same.. using a metal stamp pressed into molten gold. They repeated the process on a second copy. Both realms would have an authentic copy.

We all stood to leave.. shaking hands.. I gave Simon a hug.. told him we would see him soon, for dinner. Maybe a little sparring.. he chuckled.

We had reached the president.. and as he shook Evander’s hand, he remarked “You drive a hard bargain. It felt like we would all die if I didn’t sign.”

Evander pulled away and asked “Are you saying you agreed under duress? If so, this treaty is null and void.” President Evans said “No..no.. Not that at all.. I was making a joke.. I apologize. It was ill- timed.”

Evander nodded and responded “I understand. I get it.. Your people are fighting for your right to survival.. My people are fighting for our right to exist!”
