I am back in the house, Ernest has just driven his mother home and now it’s just Moudy and I. I could also leave but I feel terrible for the way her birthday dinner has gone so I stay behind to help with the dishes.

‘You know you don’t have to right?’ She says walking into the kitchen, she has changed into her pajamas.

‘I want to because I know you won’t get any rest until this whole place is sparkling clean.’

‘You know me too well.’ She says with a chuckle getting the tea towel so that she starts drying them

‘I am sorry for how that dinner went, honestly I wish we could behave better on a day like this.’

‘Actually I am happy.’

I raise an eyebrow

‘Okay not happy happy but something close to happiness.’

‘I really don’t know what the difference is.’ I say handing her a pot

‘I know how you will make it up to me.’

I know this side of her and I am about to fall into a big trap.

‘I am getting too old for these games.’

‘I am not telling you anything.’

‘I will tell you.’

I sigh deeply, honestly I had hoped this goes a whole different way. The plan was to cement what I have with Kasweka, prepare her for my kids and ex wife before announcing to them that she is in my life. And it’s not like I am scared of what they will do to her, I will protect her from all that with my life. It’s how she will respond to everything that is scaring me.

‘I am happy for you VK, you are a good man.’ She says putting that last of the dishes away

‘I wish everyone thought the same.’

‘Where would that fun be?’ She asks

‘Here, your birthday present.’ I say handing her an envelope

She opens it and then tears come to her eyes before stretching out her hand to hand back the cheque

‘I can’t accept it VK, this is too much.’

‘It’s your last Moudy, I have told you times without number to build something of your own away from Ernest. Not because I wish you ill but because my divorce made me see things in a different light, no one wakes up one day and starts signing divorce papers. But when that happens other people are lucky to walk away with something whilst others are not, Ernest is not a bad person. But he is my son and I know what he is capable of doing, start building something for yourself.’ I say looking straight into her teary eyes

‘What would I do without you?’ She asks coming into my arms and I hold her tightly

‘You might want to rethink the birth control, Samara is really pushing it.’

She looks startled

‘You know?’

‘Of course I know.’ I say before kissing her forehead

I say my goodbye and leave, I hate to accept it but Moudy deserves better.

I drive home thinking about my encounter with Vaughn, I am not sure I will be able to win back her heart after this and what is even more scary is her finding out the woman in question. I get home and hit the shower, when done dressing up I get to my laptop to check my emails. I asked my private investigator to bring me some information on Nelson and the things I find make me sick to my stomach, how could a normal person go to such lengths? Besides what exactly is he looking for because Kasweka is innocent in all this mess. When I close my laptop I make a mental note to set up a meeting with Kasweka’s dad the next day, I might be invading her privacy but again I can’t walk away now after having this information.
