“How many people knew about this Mr. President?” asked Ian.
“Four,” answered Mooney.
“Including the translator?”
“Ok, five.” Mooney was uncooperative, fidgety. He kept scraping his desk with his finger nails.
“They have to get gone as soon as possible. If they talk, it would devastate this government and probably send us down a path that could cause another war.”
“I know, I know…”
“So who are they?”
“Three business partners, people in the company, one officer in the navy, he was the
messenger, and the translator. Of course, the people on the receiving end. The Iranians. But they’re probably all gone by now right?”
“Iran is destroyed. What’s their status?”
“Who?”
“The five people who know about your involvement in this Mr. President.” Ian was
exasperated, but not showing it to Mooney.
“The business partners are gone. They were in New York…” He trailed off.
“Are you sure?”
“Absolutely.”
“And?”
“The officer is on the USS Bunker Hill, which in the Pacific, on duty. One of our last ships.”
“Ok we’ll have to deal with that, right?”
“It’s in progress.”
“And the translator? I see here he was very young. Is that normal?”
“I don’t know yet. I sent a team on the USS Independence looking for him and the last trail they got was that he left to go sailing on a large yacht with three other people. They’re following up. And yes, he was chosen for his lack of contacts and relative inexperience, hence his youth. Why is that important?”
“It’s not, it’s not, just curious. Is he a threat?”
“No. He can’t know what was in those texts. It was all coded. That’s why we chose
someone with no experience.”
“OK, good. He can wait. So let’s talk about the Navy officer….”
