Ch. 15 Khloe

Samael shoves me aside in an attempt to protect me from the angelic battle that is about to take place as I stand in the sand frozen in shock while Cassie, Rim, and a being I’ve never seen before are having a standoff against a handful of angels who have seemed to mysteriously appear from out of the darkness. I would call them demons, but they appear to be angels, yet their wings are as black as ink, and they are adorned in black clothing with black metallic armor wrapped around their bodies. A golden hue envelopes Cassie, Rim, and the unknown person as they each hold a sword in their hands, poised to lunge at the menacing beings across from them. I want to scream and demand to know what in the world is going on, but my voice has escaped me and the only thing I can do is stare as I hear an evil looking chick yelling at Cassie.

At some point Samael moved from where he had pushed me out of the way and joined alongside Rim; his hands held out, palms skyward as swirls of blue-black light rose from them. I watch in awe as I see him come alight with power, the magic flowing freely around him as he takes aim at the dark angels. He is so focused on the magic he is drawing from within him that he doesn’t see that one of the evil angels is about to attack him. Momentarily forgetting that Sam cannot die, I screech out a “NOO!” as I see a sword swiftly fly towards him, the metal of the blade glinting in the light of the moon as it moves through the air. I rush to help him only to see him turn his head my way, his eyes growing wide in a look of pure horror as another smaller sword is plunged into my stomach. A whimper lingers on my lips as I look into Samael’s ice-cold blue eyes and then the pain consumes me causing me to fall to the sand, the grains feeling like sandpaper against my bare legs, the sand damp upon my knees as I place my hand over the gaping wound trying to stop the blood that is seeping into my shirt and running down my side while at the same time trickling through my fingers.

Watching the blood dripping from off my hand and running down my leg I feel myself being wrapped up in a tight embrace as Samael comes up from behind me and pulls me flush against his chest and we crumble to the ground together while he cradles me to him. I’m thankful for his body heat as I’ve suddenly grown very cold in my own skin. Shivers rack my body and my muscles tremble as I tilt my head back slightly to gaze into Sam’s eyes. My heart breaks, shattering into tiny shards around my soul as I realize I haven’t gotten the kiss from him that I yearn for.

I feel myself fading, growing weak within my body. I can no longer feel Samael’s strong arms around me and am just barely able to feel a tear drop streak down my cheek as my body convulses and I can’t stop my eyes from drooping closed. Clenching my jaw shut tight, I gasp as one final bout of searing pain rips through me causing my eyes to snap open suddenly. “Khloe,” I hear Sam whisper against my ear. “Don’t leave me!” he rasps out, his voice cracking in agony. I want nothing more than to raise my hand to place upon his face. To cup his cheek and tell him I love him, but I have nothing left within me to control my movements in that way.

Samael’s body shudders against mine and I watch in awe as we are enveloped by darkness. Curiosity takes over my brain as I realize we have been wrapped up in the darkness together and then it dawns on me that we are in the shadows; he has managed to move us into the shadow world. The pain has vanished, and I feel weightless as I watch him place me gently upon some extremely soft fabric, a blanket, maybe? My eyes drift closed once more, and I suddenly feel like I’m dreaming as I feel a slight pressure against my lips. Samael’s lips are pressed against my mouth as I hear him say, “I’m sorry Khloe. Why didn’t I kiss you before now?” Sighing happily, I find myself able to kiss him back and I do so with an urgency. A desperate need as it were.

My soul leaves my body. The empty shell of flesh and bone all Samael holds for a time. Somehow even though I’m no longer tethered to the thing in his arms, I’m still able to hear his cry of anguish as he realizes I have died, and I watch him grip the body closer to his chest. My soul is hurting as I watch him, and I feel something within me begin to change. A light begins to glow from inside the body that had been me and I stare mesmerized as the white light grows brighter and brighter. “Come back to me,” I hear Sam pleading, to whom I am unsure, but it pulls at my heart. A tugging sensation begins in the center of my chest, and I feel myself being drawn back towards that body. Gasping, I feel Samael’s lips upon mine and my eyes snap open. Sam shifts against me as he feels me squirm beneath his hold. Taking in deep lung filled breaths of air, I lay still for a second or two, too stunned to do anything else. “I think I just died and came back to life...” a shaky laugh falls from my mouth as I look around the room and see that I’m inside my body once more.

“Oh my stars!” I heard Sam say in a loud whisper. “It’s not possible, is it?” I turn my gaze towards the blankets I had been curled up in because Samael’s eyes have grown wide as he stares at something near my hand. Slowly I shift my weight out of his hold and move my hand so that I can pick up the slip of paper lying next to me. Glancing at the cursive scrawl on the parchment, I look at Sam confused.

Handing him the paper I ask, “what does, ‘assignment 1’ mean?” Instead of answering me he begins to laugh to the point that his body is shaking, and I wonder if he’s in shock or having some kind of mental breakdown because he doesn’t seem to be able to stop himself from the laughter that continues to pour out of him.

Grinning Samael pulls me close to him before he exclaims, “you’re a Reaper!”

This claim has me turning quickly to look into his eyes, my mouth falling open in surprise before I return his smile and I ask excitedly, “say again? Did you just say I’m a Reaper?”

Nodding his head yes, Sam crushes his lips to mine, and I return his passion with an earth-shattering kiss of my own.
