Chapter 47

RAINE

E

Restless nights, or was it day? Hard to know when there was no sun streaming in from the stained-glass windows of the tower room. I guessed the nighttime was slightly darker. Restlessly I paced the room, trying to open the door although I knew it was locked. Laughing at myself for trying. Was this the first signs of insanity? Doing something over and over again expecting different results.

“You must stay calm, Raine. Mate will find us. I know he’ll find a way. Tasha tried her best to uplift my spirits. It wasn’t working, though.

‘How can he when he is being held prisoner?’ I threw myself down on the hard cot, screaming into the pillow. There was no escape for us and the Goddess only knows what Athan would do to me.

‘Don’t believe anything that leech says!’ she snarled at me. ‘We are strong. We need a plan. You can still let me take over without harming the pup.”

I sat up. ‘You want me to shift? You’re not strong enough to break through that door. Because going out of that window was out of the question. There was no ledge to land on, only the jagged rocks below the mists.

Tasha huffed and turned her back to me. Now was not a good time to sulk. I tried prying the shackle off using a spoon I had stolen previously and heard Tasha snicker. ‘You need help?’ she scoffed. ‘You could always break your ankle. I could heal it.”

She had a point. If I broke it, I could slip it out of the shackle with some effort. But then what?

Before I had a chance to decide how best to rid myself of the encumberment, the door swung open and the usual sl ave girls entered with my food, be it lunch, breakfast, or dinner, I had no clue.

They placed the food on the small wooden table adjacent the window and went back to stand in the furthest corner at their usual place. I had given up trying to get through to them, so I just sat down and picked at the food.

A blonde blur in my peripheral vision…

The knife narrowly missed my neck. I blocked the attack with my arm, felt the blade slice through my skin. The table overturned; food and bowls spilled onto the carpet. I held onto the girl’s arm with ounce of strength. She was strong and determined. We rolled over the bits of broken ceramic and food, grunting and snarling at each other.

I managed to wrest the knife from her hands and punched her square in the face. She was quick on her feet. I held the knife in front of me to ward her off. We were both panting with exertion. I’ve never fought with anyone before, used to being on the receiving end. But this was different. She wanted to kill me.

“What the hell? Who are you?” Blood streamed from the cut on my arm, dripping to the carpet with a soft plunk-plunk sound.

Wild eyes stared back at me. Her features reminded me of someone… Did I know her? None of the others moved from their post. They might as well have been made of stone.

“How are you not compelled like the others?” We circled each other warily. I expected her to try again, but this time I will be ready.

“I am an Alpha’s daughter.” She answered, her voice sounded hoa rse like she hardly spoke. “And you are that ba st ard king’s mate!” Her face contorted with hate, but her wolf was not present, and I found it strange.

“Yes, I am King Amaris’ mate. Why did you want to kill me? What has he done to you?” My hand hurt from clutching the knife so tightly, but I dared not let go of it. If she shifted, I would have no chance at all, being of Alpha blood.

“Hah! As if you don’t know!” She crouched down to pick up a piece of a broken bowl without taking her eyes off me.

‘We can take her. Let me shift. Tasha growled, pushing to glare at the blonde girl through my eyes. I held

her back.

don’t know. I am just as much a prisoner here as you are. Tell me.” I moved back, keeping the cot between us. My arm still stung, but the cut was healing slowly. Thanks to the wolfsbane in my system it took longer.

“He sold us to the vampires. Killed my father because we couldn’t pay his ridiculous taxes.” Menacingly she stalked towards me, the shard in her hand. It cut into her palm, but she was oblivious to it.

I shook my head, “No, that is not true. Amaris would never do that.” He said he didn’t know anything about it, and I believed him. I had no reason not to.

“You are a fool then. He is ruthless and greedy. He does not care about us.” She sneered at me, “Maybe

he sold you too.”

“You don’t know him.” My whole being ached for him, and I knew he felt it too. “I was taken.”

Closer.

“Do you have any idea what they do to us? What they make us do?” Her eyes flitted from my face to the knife I held.

“They feed on you?” I shuddered thinking of Athan’s cold hands spidering over my face and neck.

“Yes, we are used as blood bags and whatever depraved thing they have in mind.” Closer.

“But you… here you are all cozy in your little room, being fed and cared for. Why is that?” She tapped the side of her head. “Think.”

I had nowhere to run to. She was right there in my face, and she sounded insane.

“Leverage?” Athan obviously wanted something from Amaris.

She laughed in my face. “More like a gift.”

“No, no, you don’t know what you’re saying. Amaris would never give me away. I’m pregnant.” She was delusional. I gripped the hilt of the knife tighter.

“You’re an Omega. Why would he want an Omega for a queen?” she sneered at me, her eyes weighing

me.

“Why indeed!”

Neither of us heard Athan come into the room. His sudden appearance distracted me and I looked away from her for a split-second. The girl reacted quickly, stabbing me with the ceramic shard, piercing the thin material of my blouse just above my heart. Instinctively I rammed the knife home into her abdomen.

The horrified look on her face, mouth open wide, staring eyes – that look would haunt me for the rest of my life. Her blood spurted hot over my hand. As she fell back, Athan was right there to catch her.

“So much blood spilled in a castle full of hungry vampires… What were you two thinking?” he said as he bent down, ripping her neck open to feed on her.
