‘Stop! Why are you running?’ Tasha cried out. “He’s the king! You can’t run from him!”

“I can’t do this. I can’t do this.” I ran blindly, hitching the long dress up. Why is the Alpha King doing this to me?

My breath left me in a whoosh when something hit me from behind and I fell to the ground.

“What the hell!” Peter stood over me, his face contorted with fury. “Trying to run away, are you?” he pulled me up by my hair. “Stu pid b itch! I have a mind to…” I closed my eyes waiting for the slap, but his sentence ended in a strangled scream, and I turned around to see him dangling from the grasp of none other than the Alpha King.

A deep rumbling growl burst from the King’s lips as he held Peter by the neck, bringing his face right up to his Town.

“Touch her again and I will rip you to pieces.” The king snarled at Peter who desperately clutched at the large hand threatening to crush his windpipe.

I looked up at him, his face was a mask, only those dark eyes glowed like embers in his otherwise impassive face. He was focused on Peter.

“How much do you want? For her.” The king reached into his pocket and took out a wallet.

Tasha whined pitifully in my head. As I thought, I was just merchandise to these men. My heart broke a little more as tears streamed down my cheeks, and I wiped them away quickly with the back of my hand.

Peter looked at me and then back at the king. He was speechless. I watched as the king took a w ad of cash and threw it on Peter’s chest.

“Take it and get lost. If I ever see your face around here again, I will end you.”

Peter scurried onto his knees and gathered up the money, thanking the king profusely.

I trembled like a leaf blown by a merciless wind as I stared up at him, helpless and in fear of what my fate would be. Would he punish me because I ran?

I nodded, not trusting my voice and he smirked at me, linking our arms together.

“I want nothing more than to throw you over my shoulder and take you to my room, the ball be da mned, but! have a duty to perform.” He spoke so only I could hear, and those words set my body on fire, the heat spreading from my core to my neck and face. The crowd parted to let us through into the brightly lit ballroom. All eyes focused on us as he led me to the center of the room. Then the music started, a slow waltz and the lights dimmed. A glimmer ball descended from the high ceiling bathing us in starlight. Strawberry scented mist swirled around our feet and legs, blown across the ballroom by an hidden fog machine.

Applause and sounds of awe from the crowd as they watched their king open the dance floor. I became increasingly aware of his hand on the small of my back, the heat of it felt like it burned through the material of the dress. Everything else faded into the background when he held me closer to his hard body. My head didn’t even reach his shoulder, so I was left staring at the third golden button of his dark blue tunic.

I let him lead me across the dance floor, my feet blindly following his steps.

“Relax, you’re so stiff. I won’t bite.” He bent down to whisper in my ear. “Not yet.”

“Oh…” I tried to stop the breathy moan from escaping but then I faltered in my step which made him chuckle and I looked up into the dark depths of his dark eyes.

He lifted me by my waist and twirled us around while the others watched and cheered. When the music stopped, he let me go and moved to take another girl to dance. I felt strangely bereft and couldn’t help but wonder if I was to be just a plaything for him while he chose someone else to be his queen. The strange thing was, that thought had my heart aching so much I placed a hand over my breast.

Not wanting to watch him dance with another I turned away. Then my stomach growled and I moved away to get something to eat while the floor filled with dancers.

I turned around to face the dark face of the Alpha King. We bowed our heads in respect.

“Raine, come.” Again, he held out his hand to me and I took it. “You had your chance, little boy.” I saw him give Luke a wolfish grin as his arm went possessively around my waist.

“Luke, Luke! Why are you talking to that little s lut?” I heard Sasha’s high-pitched voice drifting towards us.

The king stiffened in his stead. He turned back towards the pair. I peered up at his face and in that moment, he looked down at me and smiled.

“What should I do to that foulmouthed little she-wolf?” he asked softly. “Maybe I should lock her up for a few days in the dungeon. What do you say, my Queen?”
