AMARIS

“Athan Dracul! Come out from where you’re hiding. Coward!” Yelling as I sprinted through the dark halls. of the castle, my voice bounding off the walls to mock me.

He had to be there, lurking in the shadows, waiting to attack, but I was ready for him. Nothing would

I stop me from taking him back to the Werewolf Kingdom.

Except one thing. When I rounded a corner, I ran full tilt into her. Raine.

“Raine! By the Gods! Why are you here?” Shock coursed through me as I steadied her against my chest.

Her face lit up like the sun when she saw me, but I was too caught up in my anger and concern to let her see how she affected me. For  sake! Athan could have snatched her up at any given moment. What was she thinking?!

She was impervious to my anxiety. “Amaris, my love! We need to hurry!” she said, pulling at my hands to follow her.

Did no one follow my orders anymore? Where the  was my Beta? “I have to find the vampire. Where the hell is Ross? He is a dead man!”

“Amaris, come! The portal will close soon. Leave Athan.” She urged me to follow her but I could think of nothing more than to break every bone in Athan’s body, the memory of his hands on my scantily clad mate’s body.

“Leave Athan!” Was she protecting the bloodsucker now? Jealousy took over my reasoning. “What are you? My mother? Telling me what I should do? Go back and leave me to my duty. I am the king!” I grabbed her arm and dragged her back from where she came. “Did you come here to save your vampire lover, or do you really just want to disobey me?” I snarled at her, using my Alpha power to make her submit. It had no effect on her.

“What?” she pulled away from me. “Amaris, what are you saying?” The look on her face… I might as well have slapped her. “He got into your head, didn’t he?” She hugged her arms to her waist, pain written on

the lines around her mouth. “How could you think that of me?!”

Raine turned and ran back to the portal at the same time Ross came through it. She ran straight into his arms. I heard her sobbing, and it wrenched my heart, but I shut down that emotion as fast as it came.

Ross and I glared at each other, our eyes clashing like swords. Mine conveyed a message to him that ! would deal with him later.

“Sire, we found the females and sent them through the portal. What are your orders?” Lord Greyson approached me just as Ross took Raine back with him.

“I need clothes.” I decided to stop searching for Athan. I had to get back. Rage couldn’t stop berating me for hurting our mate. But I was angry, and I needed to lash out at someone.

“Of course, Sire.” He grabbed one of the warriors with a similar built to clothes to the king.”

. “Youl Strip and give w

The man obeyed immediately, and I got dressed quickly. It was a tight fit, but it would have to do.

“Set fire to the castle and get back. If that doesn’t flush him out, then he’s not here.” I strode to the portal without looking back.

“You heard your king! Hurry!” Lord Greyson was close behind me, leaving the remaining warriors. behind to do my bidding.

When I stepped out of the portal, everyone sank to their knees to pay their respects to me. Except my queen. She looked at me with unsmiling, glittering eyes, her head held high, and arms folded across her waist. Although dressed in a maid’s uniform, she appeared every inch the queen she was. Ross was at her side, bowing briefly to me.

I nodded at my refugees. They would have to be incorporated into our pack, having nowhere else to go. But that was a task I would happily give to the elders to decide. “Rise.” I told them

The witch served us well and I was yet to compensate her. “My warriors will return shortly. Do you think you’d be able to hold the portal open a while longer?”  sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ FindNøvᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

She looked strained and pale, leaning on Rhona. At least Raine had her chaperone with her, I took note

of that.

“I will, King Amaris. If your queen will help me. I need her support.” Joanna’s soft voice sounded tired.

Raine didn’t wait for me to give my permission. She hurried over to Joanna and took her hands. “Tell

me what you need,” she said.

Ross approached me cautiously. He knew me well. “Your Majesty, I am sorry she slipped away from me.”

“Not now!” I snapped at him. “You deserve to be flogged for what happened, Ross, and I am considering it.” I believed Ross to be my friend, but that didn’t mean he was exempt from my authority, and he had failed in his task. Lesser men would have been put to death.

Ross bowed his head, tightlipped, and went to gather the refugees, taking the initiative. I watched Raine and Joanna, puzzled that she requested Raine for support. What did I miss? As I watched the two women concentrating on keeping the portal open, I was once again struck by my mate’s beauty. Her face glowed as if being illuminated by an inner light. I caressed her face with my eyes, let them linger on her ruby lips which I so longed to bruise with my own. My desire for her burned through me and I couldn’t wait to get her back home.

‘I wouldn’t hold my breath. She’s angry and hurt. Rage growled out. He was right, I’d lashed out at her, angry that Athan had slipped through my fingers.

‘I will make it up to her.‘ But there was still that nagging thought at the back of my mind – Athan’s claim that the child was his – I couldn’t shake it. Were the mental pictures of my own making, or did he plant them there?

Lord Greyson and the rest of my warriors stepped into the clearing and the portal wavered and closed behind them, leaving a strong scent of ether, sweet and pungent in the crisp air. Joanna collapsed into Raine’s arms

“Rhona, take your mother inside. She needs to rest.” I heard Raine say. That was news to me.

I barely had time to talk to Lord Greyson when the forest rustled with approaching footfalls and Sorin accompanied by a troupe of his men appeared from between the fir trees.

MOO..

“I guess I have to welcome you back, Brother. And just in time too. The supernatural with word of your attack on the Vampire Realm, and they fear who will be next. I am a planning to retaliate.” With his hands on his narrow hips, he stood and smirked at me you’ve managed to start a war.“–
