Isaac’s phone buzzed out of the blue.
In the quiet hospital room, the ringtone was particularly jarring.
Isaac picked it up and saw Shona’s name flash on the screen.
He frowned, standing up to step out of the room.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Salter, sorry to bother you at this hour.” Shona’s voice sounded weak.
“What’s up?”
“The team told me everything’s going smoothly, so I thought I’d let you know in case you are worried. I’ll try to keep the engagement party small, but there’s no avoiding the public gossip.”
The sound of the New Year bells rang out, waking Brittany.
The spot next to her was already empty Brittany propped herself up, rubbing her eyes. A strange sense of unease settled in her heart.
She struggled to sit up, sliding off the bed and making her way to the bathroom.
As she entered, she heard footsteps outside.
“Ms. Dustin?”
It was the nurse’s voice.
Brittany wanted to answer but suddenly felt a pang in her stomach. She quickly squatted down, waiting for the pain to subside before standing up again. When she came out of the bathroom, the nurse was gone.
Brittany assumed she was looking for her, so she went to the nurse’s station to ask
Just as she got close, she heard the nurses talk.
“Wasn’t Mr. Salter supposed to be engaged to Shona? Why is he still visiting Ms. Dustin?”
“He probably can’t let go of Ms. Dustin, she’s so pretty Shona can’t hold a candle to Ms. Dustin.”
Brittany’s ears rang as if something had shattered
They were saying Isaac was getting engaged to Shona?
Brittany trembled violently. She instinctively steadied herself against the wall, a sharp pain spreading through her chest.
She never thought she could still feel that pain. She thought she had given up.
But little did she know, Isaac could still do something even more heart wrenching!
He told her that he would never be with anyone else.
All that, he got engaged to Shona.
What a joke!
Thank God she saw through it all early on. That marriage felt like a surreal dream!
The nurses’ gossip continued.
Brittany returned to her bed, feeling a sharp pain in her abdomen.
She covered her eyes with her hand, and after a long while, tears started to fall.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when the door to the room was pushed open
Isaac was back.
Brittany closed her eyes and took deep, even breaths.
The rustling noise came next, followed by Isaac climbing into the bed and gently pulling her into his arms. He kissed her forehead reverently, as if she were the most precious treasure in the world.
Brittany bit her lip hard, using all her strength to stop herself from pushing him away.
Isaac must have been really tired, because he fell asleep quickly
Brittany slipped out of his arms. She had never felt so clear-headed.
They hadn’t even divorced, yet he was engaged to Shona, and the whole city knew about it.
He had duped her like a fool.
She thought about how she used to long for her old life and wished she could slap herself
Brittany took a deep breath; her mind raced with thoughts. If she wanted to escape that predicament, Shona was the only one who could help her. What woman could tolerate another woman by her husband’s side?

Brittany didn’t sleep all night. As dawn broke, she finally succumbed to exhaustion and fell asleep.
Isaac left carefully.
After he left, a slender figure suddenly appeared at the hospital. The person was dressed modestly, but the face was impossible to hide. It was Jole!
