After doing everything in his power to halt the truck, the driver was gasping, overwhelmed
with horror.
Seeing the person he had hit motionless on the ground, he froze. It was his first accident in all his years on the road, and it had claimed a life.
His legs felt like jelly as he waited a few seconds before opening the door and stepping
out.
He approached Evelyn, but at the sight of her condition, he couldn’t bring himself to touch her. His hands trembling, he took out his phone and called the police and the ambulance immediately.
A woman from the card room, known for loving gossip but not for malice, saw the severity of Evelyn’s accident and knew she was alone. She quickly dialed Thalassa’s number. Evelyn was a regular at the card games, and sometimes Thalassa would stop by, so the woman knew how to reach her.
