Chapter 29

Emmett quietly entered the cave. Amelia stood with her back to him, arms crossed, eyes closed. Her breaths were slightly labored.

"Amy?"

"Hello, Emmett."

"Does it hurt?" He asked softly, reaching out to touch her neck. He watched and quickly pulled is hand back as she inhaled sharply, her breaths becoming more labored for a moment. She clenched her teeth. Her eyes squeezed shut, and her hands clenched into fists. Emmett was dismayed to see tears somehow squeezing out from under her eyelids. After a few seconds she unclenched and let out some air slowly.

"Yeah," She answered. "It hurts. A lot."

"I know a way to help you." Her head lifted.

"I read that paper you threw away. The one you ripped out of your book."

She turned around halfway, panic starting to form in her eyes. "What?"

"I can heal you, Amy."

Realization crept into her eyes. "No, Emmett! Don't you dare!" Emmett grabbed her hand in a flash before she could escape and tilted her chin upwards and locked eyes with her before she could close them. Her breathing got quicker and her eyes got wide. He felt energy leaving him and going to her. After a few seconds he could see her pain reflected intensely in her expression, although she couldn't make a sound. The bond got stronger and stronger, and she dropped to her knees. Emmett felt her hand tighten on his, felt the intensity rise. Wind started to blow wildly, stronger than it had in his Awakening. He started to feel dizzy and nauseated. The intensity climaxed, and she finally cried out, yanking her hand away from his, her gaze dropping to the floor. He imagined that the pain was excruciating. He swayed in his spot, nauseated, black spots dancing in front of his eyes.

"Emmett," Amy coughed. "Don't you ever do that again. Ever." She put her hands on his shoulders to steady him. "Emmett. Look at me. Are you alright?"

Emmett nodded and took deep breaths, forcing the dizziness away.

"Yeah, I'm okay," He breathed. He looked up at Amy, and saw the concern and fear in her grey eyes fade away to anger.

"What were you thinking?!" She demanded. "Do you have any idea what could have happened?! Do you have any idea what happens when you use up all of your energy in one go?!"

"You die."

"That's right. You die. You burn up." Her eyes darkened. "You literally catch on fire. You spontaneously combust." She stood up and made to exit the cave.

"Wait," Emmett called before she left. "How do you know what happens?"
