A Hero's Return

“Congratulations, Vincent Vandraken, you earned the status of a genuine guardian. You are now the true host of Volaxion, and so it will remain until you forfeit that right to someone else.”

My heart was beating faster as I anticipated merging with Volax again.

I was like a child trying to keep myself from appearing too overanxious. Pyruviox gestured towards the floor before me, and a section of it melted back, similar to the science room.

I saw Volax’s pod rise from the hole in the floor on a metallic plate, stopping about chest level.

“Thank you, Pyruviox.”

“You are welcome, Vincent. You may be concerned with the Dondravens possessing splitter devices and using them on you. Nearly all of them are destroyed. The Volistian army has captured the main power source of the devices, and it is in the hands of our people. We will do all we can to ensure that all remaining devices are destroyed.”

“I understand. I’ll also watch for the devices and destroy any I encounter.”

Pyruviox nodded in agreement and gestured toward the pod in front of me.

“I now present you with the pod of Volaxion. You will forever be one being. You will guard the people of your planet and other interplanetary beings that require your help. Once you merge, you will be rendered unconscious and awaken on your home planet.

It was my pleasure to host you on this ship. The Dryservious host is now being held captive and will answer for his offenses on all planets, including yours. The Superior Council will determine what to do with Dryservious, the guardian of darkness. Go in peace, young guardian, and may the souls of the universe go with you.”

“Thank you, Pyruviox,” I replied as I reached out and positioned the pod in my hand.

“I’ll do my best to be the guardian you need me to be. Thank you for your hospitality.”

The pod slowly spun in my hand and stopped once the yellow symbol faced me.

I pressed it with my thumb, and it instantly dissolved into my hand.

Finally! I got you back, pal.

It was much smoother than the last time because I was anticipating it.

I smiled at Pyruviox and continued until everything faded to black.

I woke up on my back with the sun shining in my eyes. I raised my hand to block it out because it was so bright.

I was lying on a dirt road with fields and wooded areas around me. I sat up to see if anything looked familiar to me.

I knew where I was after a few moments. I was lying in the driveway of my hideout, the place where Volaxian and I first merged.

We’re finally home and in one piece.

“Good morning, Vincent. I have been patiently waiting for you to regain consciousness.”

“Volax! Thank God! I thought I’d never hear your voice again,” I said excitedly. I stood up and did a little celebration dance.

“That is very interesting, Vincent, because the council agreed that we would merge again. I will admit that I missed being in your presence.”

“I missed you too, pal,” I said as I brushed off my metallic suit.

“Let’s go home.”

“Okay, Vincent, shall we teleport?”

“Not this time, pal. I’ll walk if you don’t mind.

“I do not mind.”

I walked down the long driveway, enjoying the sunshine on my face and the feel of the dirt beneath my feet.

The smell of nature was glorious, and I soaked up every moment. I saw the house in the distance getting closer.

I could see a figure sitting on the porch.

There’s my girl.

As I got within forty feet of the house, I could see it was Sky, with her head buried in her hands.

She slowly raised her head.

She noticed me walking towards the house. She used a hand to block the sunlight from her eyes to see who it was.

I’m sure my metallic outfit threw her off. She stood up and started to walk towards me. I smiled at her with the biggest smile I’d ever smiled.

“You waiting for me?”

She screamed through her tears as she started running towards me.

“Vincent! Oh my God,”

I walked faster towards her, opening my arms to hug her as soon as she reached me.

Within seconds, she rushed into my arms and buried her face in my neck as we hugged each other tightly.

“They said you were dead.”

“How about CASH? Are they calling me a hero, too,” I asked with a smirk.

“Well, not everyone,” she replied, rolling her eyes.

“How long have I been gone?”

“Three days.”

“Wow! I thought it was only an hour or so. Are you sure?”

“Yes. Vincent, they all think you’re dead.”

“Well, I’m not,” I said before I pulled her in close and kissed her.

Once we kissed, she looked at me with concern in her eyes.

Bad news?

“Where’s Jack?”

“He didn’t make it,” I replied somberly. “I couldn’t save him. It happened so fast.”

“What,” she said with tears forming in her eyes. “I’m sorry.”

“Me too.”

We held each other’s hand as we walked to the house.

The silence regarding Jack’s death was like a barrier between us.

I was delighted to be back and have Sky by my side.

Once we got settled in the house, I changed my clothes and decided to go to the hospital to reclaim Jack’s body and have a proper burial for him.

I teleported Sky and me to her apartment so she could at least be in a place she was acquainted with.

Once there, we decided to walk to the hospital and claim Jack’s body.
