Scarlett

I left my hospital shift early today and took tomorrow off too, it was my first Moon Ball after 22, and I was sure in my heart that I would meet my mate that night, I already booked the day of tomorrow because the idea is that I don't leave the room after meeting my life mate. Some wolves, ball after ball, took years to finally find their soulmate, but I hoped to find it the first time.

I hurried home and Karen, my older sister, was already there waiting for me, she met her mate Thomas at her second ball, he was a guard in our Pack. She mated with him and they moved out 2 years ago, but she always said she would dress up with me for my first Ball and so she did. But with her was Brisa, her best friend, and was always there at the house before Karen moved in, we ended up becoming very close too.

"You're finally here, go take a shower and get rid of that hospital smell, your hair and makeup won't do themselves, Lett." Karen said patting me on the butt as I walked through the door.

I threw my lab coat on the living room chair and smelled my clothes before speaking.

"But it's not that bad." I responded laughing to Karen who returned a raised eyebrow "Okay, I'm going to get in the shower and wait for you in my room."

Karen and Brisa followed me and started taking my makeup arsenal out of the drawers while I showered, and my attempt to calm myself with the hot water was in vain, with every second that passed I became more and more nervous. I left the bathroom with the towel on my head and a soft, terrycloth robe wrapped around my body, I found Karen with her light brown hair curled into curls and Brisa finishing her makeup, highlighting all the intensity of her brown eyes.

"Lett, start by drying your hair and I'll curl it for you later," Karen said standing up and picking up a dress wrapped in a black cape that she brought. "What dress did you choose? Mine will be much simpler this time, once you find yourself your mate you don't want to attract so much attention."

"I chose a navy blue, fairer. It has a little shine too." I said smiling, taking off the towel and running my fingers through my hair.

"Hmm, are you going to put all your curves into play then?" Brisa asked smiling, finishing applying her lipstick. She was brunette and had big brown eyes, she highlighted them even more with the makeup and looked even more beautiful. "I just hope I finally meet my partner at this ball. I can't stand being alone anymore."

She said laughing, but I knew deep down that this was pure frustration, she was 4 years older than me, but she hadn't discovered her partner yet.

"Your last relationship was with the Alpha, wasn't it?" Karen asked her as she tied her hair into a loose bun.

She laughed, but I knew it was a delicate subject for her, as Brisa didn't handle that ending very well. My father was tall and had blond hair and brown eyes, he had a wide smile that I loved, and he had probably just come from Pack's House, where he worked with my brother.

"Where's Bob? I'm going to need him now." My father said, letting me go and asking my mother.

"He's in his room, but why Ronald? Bob needs to go to the Ball soon."

"Alpha needs to adjust some things for the Council's trip, and the logistics sector is Bob's department, we need to adjust the security guards and the entourage. And it's not even his first Ball, why does he need to go early?" My father said seriously, back to my mother.

"He could pick another day to monopolize you, couldn't he?" I said putting my hand on my waist.

"You look beautiful Tif, but can we meet there?" My brother asked Tifanny and she smiled sweetly and nodded.

"It's true darling, you look beautiful." My mother said smiling at her.

I pushed my brother's shoulder and pointed to my dress.

"Okay, okay, you look cool too, Lett." He said laughing.

"Hey," I laughed pushing him again.

"Come on Bob, we're supposed to be at Headquarters." My father said walking out the door. "Bye girls, see you later."

"Have you spoken to your sister Scarlett?" My mother asked me, running her hand over my dress.

"Yes, she said mom, I'll cover her shift tomorrow, in case the pretty one finds her mate and wants to spend the whole day in bed with him, and she'll take my place tomorrow night," Karen said in a sweet voice and laughed at me.

"Karen." I tried to warn, but my mother just laughed.

"Great, next week we'll set the scales for the other week." My mother said, picking up her bag on the table, we tried not to talk about work too much at home, but it was very difficult, especially in our family. Thomas my sister's mate was on duty tonight, so she was going alone with us.

"I officially declare the Moon Ball open, I wish luck and prosperity in the love of the couples that will form tonight. Enjoy the party."

I felt a hand on my back and turned to see my mother with a smile.

"Just on time!" She said sighing and it was just in time for the moving roof of the room to open, and reveal the Moon, completely full and beautiful, shining for us, and midnight arrived, I took a deep breath, hoping that something inside me would change, but nothing, I felt absolutely nothing. The feeling of fulfillment, of perfect joy, of peace and harmony that I expected, simply didn't come.

Then I heard and felt a movement next to me and I could see Tifanny's eyes change with her wolf, I looked ahead, looking for where she was looking, and my heart squeezed with fear that it wasn't my brother.

They were dating without knowing if they were mates and they knew the risks, but I was rooting for them so much.

"Mates, long live your love." He said, raising a glass of whiskey and toasting in the air, and we all did so.

My brother took Tifanny in his arms and kissed her in the middle of everyone, their happiness was palpable and contagious. A few more couples formed and I was almost thinking it wouldn't be my night, I took another sip of the champagne I was drinking, when I felt my legs tingle, I almost choked on the liquid, and I turned towards the dance floor, the tingling grew and when it reached my chest I was overcome by a strong feeling of passion, happiness and love, and that was when a wolf appeared in the middle of the crowd...
