THE HYBRID WOLF
Chapter three

Leone is a beast. We've been running for over hours at an incredibly fast speed but there is no sign of fatigue in us. Even though I would have loved to push further till I get my limits, it is already late and I need to get back to the pack house before Alpha Jacob and Luna Katie start looking for me everywhere.

I reach the spot where I had laid my clothes and shift back to get dressed.

I move in my usual noiseless manner and today, I'm so grateful for this strange ability of mine because I don't want to see anyone at the moment.

I take off my clothes and put on my pajamas once I'm in my bedroom and fall on the bed like a log of wood wishing I could just go straight to sleep, but it remained wishful thinking.

I toast and turn on the bed willing for sleep to come and nothing. I look at the watch on my bedside and it is nearly midnight.

I am awoken by a sharp burning pain. All my insides are burning, like I'm in a furnace. I shout at the top of my voice, holding my head in excruciating pain.

The door to my room is suddenly broken and I see alpha Jacob and Luna Katie come to me.

"Omg, Leila... What is wrong baby? " I hear from a distance Luna Katie cry out. It must have been a sight because she was already crying.

"Let's get her to the pack doctor, " the alpha says and that is the last thing I hear before I black out from pain.

I wake up in a room, all white, with a strong smell of disinfectants. My head started hurting like a motherfucker as soon as I opened my eyes.

The pain is too much and I scream. The doctor, Alpha, and Luna get into my room with concern written all over their faces.

My screams are so loud that Luna Katie cries and begs the doctor to sedate me again. The doctor nods his head and injects something into the catheter in my view and I drift off.

I don't know how long I've been sleeping but the beeping sound of a machine wakes me. I groan as I try to open my eyes. I'm in the same white room, the smell is the same but the pain has subsided. I mean the pain is still there, but it is bearable.

My throat feels dry like sandpaper. I try to speak but it's painful. From the corner of my eye, I see Luna Katie advance towards me with a broad smile. I try to smile back but fail.

"Here, let me help you... " she says giving me some water with a straw so I could sip and it does wonderful things to my aching throat. She also helps me in a semi-sitting position. Adjusting the pillows behind me so I could be comfortable. I now manage to give her a small smile.

"Thank you," I say in a hoarse voice.

I look around and only now, do I notice Alpha Jacob standing on the other side of the room looking furious. I had never seen my alpha looking this upset before.

"What is going on? " I ask tentatively, and by their looks, I'm not sure I want to know the answer.

"Mom? " As soon as I call the Luna that, she breaks down crying. At first, I thought I might have offended her by calling her that, but then, she said yesterday that I was now her daughter.

"I am sorry sweetie. I am so sorry... " she continues crying and apologizing but she hasn't said anything yet so I'm not sure what I need to forgive.

The alpha comes to where we are and holds his mate in his arms, comforting her.

Sadness befalls me because I'm in a hospital bed and my mate is not here. I try to connect with Leone, to know how she is doing but it is total silence. Wtf?

Now I know something is terribly wrong. I try to feel the mate bond, but it is gone. A sharp pain tears through my head, and I scream, but it is gone as soon as it comes.

"Where is John? Did something happen to my mate? " I ask getting worked up. My blood starts boiling. This should explain the cries of the Luna and why I can't feel the mate bond anymore.

I start to shake on the bed and my eyes turn red. As red as the blood in my veins. Whoever laid a finger on my mate will die as soon as I get out of this bed.

I'm still deep in thought, planning how to harm the person who touched my mate, processing the future without a mate when I hear Luna Katie say

"He mated and marked Viviane a week ago, "

My head started spinning. I must have heard her wrong. We all know that if you mate with someone else before officially rejecting your true mate if you have one, it's like condemning your mate to death.

I start laughing hysterically, like a maniac because it is not possible. It can't be true right? Even if John doesn't want me, he wouldn't put my life at risk, right?

I abruptly stop laughing when I see the alpha and Luna gazing at me with so much pity.

Is that why Leone is so silent?

My eyes go wide as I realize they are not bluffing.

"We almost lost you, Leila. If not for your wolf being so strong, we could have... " she trails off shaking her head like that possibility was not even something she wanted to contemplate and I just die to myself.
