Chapter 19

Reginald’s right leg was disabled.

Chapter 19

He was in such agorry that his face turned ghostly pale, on the verge of passing out.

“Come with me. I’ll take you off the surveillance camera!” the Greenhood said.

The masked duo swiftly left the scene.

After several turns, Markus and Harrison emerged on a different street, all signs of their felonious endeavor absent, looking like they were just out for a leisurely stroll.

Harrison had a conflicted look in his eyes. “Never would’ve expected it was youl

Markus shrugged nonchalantly. “Didn’t figure you for the type to have the guts to go after Reginald for revengel Must be true love, huh?”

“If I didn’t do something for Emily, I’d feel like I’ve let her down!”

Harrison’s eyes glistened with sorrow as he sighed deeply. “All I can do for her now is this.”

Immediately after, he asked with curiosity, “How come you’re here?”

“Same reason as you! Except, you’re driven by love,” Markus responded, “I’m here for justice!”

Raising his eyebrows, Harrison retorted, “Oh, the gallant knight of the streets, aren’t you?”

“Don’t flatter me. I just… can’t stand idly by.” Markus smiled slightly.

Can’t stand idly by when seeing injusticel

When something unjust happened right under his nose, he couldn’t just turn a blind eye to it.

It was a promise he’d once made to his godfather.

Pulling out a sword when encountering injustice!

Harrison licked his lips and said, “Anyway, on behalf of Emily, thank you!”

Markus clumsily took out the crumpled empty cigarette pack from his pocket.

Oh no.

The pack was empty.

He needed to start rationing.

“I don’t have any cigarettes on me either. There’s a tobacco shop across the street. I’ll go grab you a pack.”

After saying that, Harrison began to cross the street.

The guy had just done him a huge solid, so buying him a pack of smokes was the least he could do.

“Hold up!”

Harrison turned around, a puzzled look on his face as he stared at Markus.

“If you’ve got the cash, grab a carton.”

Harrison was at a loss for words.

The guy did help a lot, so buying a carton of cigarettes was nothing.

I prefer Marlbolos or Treasurers!”

Harrison was speechless again.

Since he’d done him such a big favor, what was a carton of Marlbolos or Treasurers?

A few minutes later, Harrison returned with a carton of Treasurers.

Markus grinned from ear to car as he ripped open the carton, took out a pack, and lit one up for each of them.

He shoved the rest into his jacket.

“Do you reckon this counts as revenge?”

Markus suddenly piped up.

Harrison frowned, puzzled. “Doesn’t it?”

“It doesn’t count unless we put him behind bars.”

At that, Harrison could only offer a bitter smile.

Reginald was hauled off to the City Watch today, but he was sprung in less than two hours.

If the City Watch couldn’t handle Reginald, what could he possibly do?

Was he supposed to go toe-to-toe with Reginald in a life-or-death battle?

He didn’t have the chops for that.

Moreover, his world didn’t just revolve around Emily.

“Do you want revenge?” Markus tossed the question again.

Without skipping a beat, Harrison replied, “Yes!”

*Exchange numbers, then. We’ll continue making trouble for Reginald tomorrow!”

Harrison froze again.

How could they make trouble for him?

Despite his confusion, he took out his phone and exchanged numbers with Markus.

If an unrelated passerby dared to confront Reginald for Emily, he had no reason to fear.

“By the way, how come you’re a lone wolf going up against Reginald? Where’s your crew?” Markus asked out of curiosity. After some thought, Harrison replied, “Too many cooks spoil the soup, plus I didn’t want to drag them into this.”

Markus nodded in understanding

This guy Harrison had the guts to go the extra mile for his girlfriend and still considered his friends.

This was a stand-up guy.

Markus cautioned, “If Reginald calls the City Watch, deny it. I’ve already trashed the surveillance in the parking lot, and you’ve got the baseball bat. As long as you stick to denying it, the City Watch won’t touch you! Now, whether the Montague Crime Family will come after you, well, you’re on your own.”

Harrison nodded, taking Markus’s words to heart.

“I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Sure!”

Markus turned to leave.

Just then, Reginald received a call out of the blue.

It was Theodore on the line.

Without missing a beat, Harrison picked up. “Theodore, what’s up?”

“Worried that the hit on Emily would’ve rattled you, thought I’d check in. You sound all right, so that’s a relief. Josephine

and I are grabbing a bite at the Riverside Food Stall. Coming?” Harrison’s voice came over the phone.

Grabbing a bite?

Harrison was in no mood for that.

He was about to refuse

“I’m on my way!

But Markus, who’d unexpectedly returned, made the decision for him.

Theodore, seemingly unaware that it was a different voice, said, “See you,” and then hung up.

Harrison looked up at Markus, questioning with his eyes. “Why’d you return?

“And why agree for me?

“Emily took the leap just last night, who’s got the stomach for a midnight snack?”

Markus, unruffled, explained, “It’s not about the food, man. Just ensuring we have an alibi if Reginald rats us out to the City Watch!”

Harrison froze, asking, “You’re coming with me?”

“Why else would I have come back?” Markus shot back naturally.

Gurgle!

Phare and his crew looked puzzled

How did Harrison wind up rolling with Markus, the guy from the bar brawl last night!

“I was just clearing my head on the streets when I bumped into Markus… I mean, Brother Markus So, he tagged along”

Harrun offered a casual explanation

Theodore seemed to be giving Markus the stink eye.

He didn’t like Markus very much.

Neuher did Anthony

But both Josephine and Cordelia had a sparkle in their eyes

Guest it’s true what they say the opposite sex attracts and the same sex repels.

“Miss Beatrix, we meet again. When do I get my five-star hotel stay you promised?”

Markus, comfortably seated, instantly shot a look at Cordelia… her chest actually.

Well…

Cordelia was at a loss for words.

She never thought Markus would dare to dropkick Bernard.

And it was more than just a daring dropkick.

Had it not been for the 11th-hour intervention of Abigail from the City Watch, the Insatiable Bar would have been turned upside down by Markus.

But would she make good on her promise and book a room with Markus?

She wasn’t that kind of girl.

“Mind your tongue, it was just a joke, are you taking it seriously? A five-star hotel… in your dreams!” Anthony snapped. Markus, paying Anthony no mind, shifted his gaze to Josephine, asking, “What’s with you rich ladies? Are you always this good at not keeping your word”

Josephine blushed.

She hadn’t forgotten about her vow of marring Markus.

The question was, how could she marry him?

Anthony shot off another round of derision. “Markus, if you want to eat, then mind your manners…”

However, it was Harrison who unexpectedly stood up, his voice grave as he said, “Anthony, Brother Markus is a friend of mine. You should watch your tone!”

Everyone turned to look at Harrison, their faces a picture of surprise.

Since when had be become closer to Markus than to his childhood friends?
