The Journal of Memories
He changed for a second

I felt the wind rushing passed us as we sped down the streets. Half the time I was waving in between all the cars that were left on the road. A few people stood confused or ran away as we passed which was good because I really did not want to deal with people. Luna gripped onto me more whenever we passed a larger group of people.

She must be really scared after what happened.

After a few more minutes I got a weird feeling and stopped. Luna seemed really uneasy and got off my bike, “Why did we stop?”

I climbed off too and looked around, “I am not sure. I just good a strange feeling.”

My eyes locked onto the building in front of us.

My head was shocked.

A grocery store.

I looked over at Luna who was frantically looking around at every person in the distance, “It’s a store where we can get food.”

Her eyes locked with mine as they dimmed, “Oh yeah... right.”

I walked closer and lightly grabbed her arm, “It’s okay. We are just going to grab some food then we will get driving again.”

She gave me a quick smile then went back to worry, “Alright.”

We began walking towards the store with Macy following behind us. I pulled on the door.

It’s locked. How are we going to get in?

I quickly looked around for another way in but Luna was one step ahead of me. She found a piece of metal on the ground and lifted it up to break through the glass door.

“What are you doing?!”

She laughed, “Getting inside. It’s not like anyone around here is going to know what is happening or even care.”

I sighed, “Well I guess you have a point.”

I still don’t like the idea of it. Someone out there owns this place.

She swung the metal and cracked the glass, taking a few more swings until it finally broke. She reached in and unlocked it pulling open the door, “After you good sir.”

I chuckled, “Why thank you, my lady... you seem really good at breaking into things.”

She just shrugged.

Maybe she has done it before...

I reached down and picked up Macy so she wouldn’t get her paws cut on the glass. Stepping through the glass I set her down and scanned the store. I heard Luna follow behind me as the glass crunched under her shoes. She looked around the store as well, “What should we get?”

I thought for a moment, “We should probably find some food for Macy and some more food and water for us. If we miss anything, we can always find another store, after all we have the whole city to pick from.”

She froze for a second, “I just realized we basically have the whole city to ourselves. It’s not like anyone out there knows anything.”

“It’s kind of cool if you think about it. We can do what we want.”

She nodded, “I am going to find Macy some food.”

We both walked down the shelves looking and picking things up to take with us. We both met back at the door packing up our new acquired items into the backpack. I picked up Macy over the glass again and we walked back to my bike. Luna froze staring at a car.

“What’s wrong?”

I followed her gaze to see a guy in a car. He was struggling in his seat belt and hitting his hands against the window.

I looked at her terrified state, “That poor guy doesn’t even understand where he is. Or even how to get out.”

She just kept staring and whispered, “I-I want to help him.”

I just nodded my head as she made her way over to the small red car. The guy saw her and froze with wide eyes. She slowly reached and opened the door. That’s when the guy went crazy again and began hissing at her and struggling in the seat belt. I saw how terrified she was as she put her hands out, “Hey... Hey it’s okay. I am trying to help.”

The guy somewhat calmed down but was still frightened as she moved to undo his seat belt. She slowly reached over and pressed the button letting his belt loosen off of him. The immediately freaked out again, throwing his hands everywhere and growling. Luna was scratched and backed away as fast as she could. The guy jumped out of the car and stood in front of her for a minute, staring at her. His eyes landed on her scratched arm for a second and they showed a bit of emotion. Then, something switched back to fear and he took off running down the street. Luna stood frozen and I walked over to her, “Hey... You good?”

She jumped at my voice then calmed down, “D-did y-you s-see that?”

She was really shaken up. I nodded my head.

“S-something c-changed in him for a minute... l-like he felt guilty for hurting me.”

She looked confused, “H-he felt e-emotion but then went back to nothing.” S~ᴇaʀᴄh the (F)indNƟvᴇl.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

I softly laid my hand on her shoulder, “I know... Let’s go to somewhere safe and clean up your arm.”

We got back on my bike and began driving down the road again. The sun was going down making the street fill with shadows from the small buildings. Some of the buildings were in ruins and blackened out, letting the orange rays of sunshine hit us. I pulled up to a building with a lot of doors.

Shock.

A motel.

I parked my bike close to a door and jumped off. I looked over at Luna, “We can sleep here tonight. It will be safe.”

The door was opened a bit with the card still in the slot.

The person who was here must have been in a hurry.

I took the card and looked through the room before waving Luna in. There were two beds and clothes thrown everywhere. I threw my bag on the bed and closed the door after everyone was in, “We can clean it up a bit. It will work for tonight.”

Luna was quiet and sat on one of the beds, Macy jumped up next to her, “I saw his eyes brighten a bit before he left.”

“Me too,” I sat down on the other bed facing her.

“It was like he was fighting something inside of himself... do you think that is why we are the way we are? Like whatever he was fighting... we have been able to fight through it.”

I shrugged, meeting her eyes, “I am not sure... What did we fight through?”

She just looked more confused, “I am not sure yet... But I feel like we are this way for a reason. I am sure we will find out what it is though... It can’t be like this forever.”

I smiled at her, “I sure hope so. I still hate these shocks.”

She smiled back a me, “Goodnight Ben.”

She lay back on the bed and Macy curled up next to her.

“Goodnight Luna.”
