288 Vouchers 

Paxtyn had asked Xander for permission to take me out for some frozen coffees after classes on Friday and then she would help me get ready for this party that the Kings are throwing. Surprisingly, he allows me to go as long as Paxtyn doesn’t let me out of her sight. The irritation over being treated like a kid grows, but I push it aside, so I can enjoy some girl time for once. 

“Why do they feel as though they need to be douchebags to everyone? I mean, I get it, they are upperclassman, but we aren’t in high school anymore.” I ask my new friend as we sit on the patio of a nearby coffee shop. 

“I think, for them, it’s proving themselves worthy to their fathers. Xander’s mom always kept him grounded and down to earth, and once she passed, he no longer had anyone to do that.” 

I study the pretty girl for a moment before asking my next question, “How do you know so much about the Kings?” 

Paxtyn scoffs, “Because I used to be Xander and Garrett’s best friend. We were inseparable growing up until everything happened with Mrs. Whitmore. I tried doing what his mother did for him, you know, keep him grounded and such, but he didn’t want me acting like his mother and then one day, both him and Garrett just stopped talking to me.” 

“What, with no explanation at all? That must have been rough.” I feel bad for the girl because I can still see the hurt in her eyes over the betrayal. That does explain the little exchange that Xander and Garrett had when I first mentioned Paxtyn being my only friend here. Xander is also allowing me to remain friends with her, so he must still see her as someone worthy enough, he still has trust in her.

She shrugs it off, though, “It’s all in the past and we have moved on. Besides, every time I tried getting an explanation, they made my life. hell for a little bit, and so I quit trying.” She leans forward and lowers her voice, “You need to be careful with those three, Kambree. I’m not sure what’s going on with them, but whatever it is, it isn’t good.” 

Her warning gives me the chills but it’s not as though I am scared of them hurting me per se; it’s more like I’m scared of the intentions that I‘ m beginning to think they may have for me. What happens if I’m right? What will I do when that time comes because I feel as though I may not be able to protect myself from any of it. Most importantly, do I really want to? 

“What the hell is this?” Paxtyn holds up the piece of scrap that is supposed to be a dress. 

“It’s the dress that I am to wear tonight.” I reply as I walk back into my tiny room. There is barely room in it for me, never mind two people. 

“Seriously, what’s with them giving you tiny things?” Paxtyn looks. around the small area and then back at the dress. 

I shrug, “Xander says that I have to earn one of the bigger rooms. As for the dress, I’m not sure, just some sick joke, I’m sure.” Paxtyn looks. at me with sympathy, “Please don’t. I only have to deal with this until my mom and Jonus get back, which should be in a few more days.” 

“You’re supposed to be their guest, Kambree, not,” she holds up the dress, “their plaything.” 

I haven’t told Paxtyn about my diary entries and how they are holding them over my head. For some reason, I don’t think it will go over so well with her and the last thing I want is for her to get on the King’s shit list because of me. So, I just try to laugh it off as much as I can.

I snatch the dress from her hands and roll my eyes, “I’m not their plaything. They are trying to see how far they can push me, and I won’t allow them to see me break. I’ll play their little game with one of my own. I’ve only got to last through the weekend.” 

“Kambree, I don’t think you realize that you are playing with fire.” 

“Then I will fight fire with fire.” I simply state as I discard my robe and get dressed. 

“You’re not listening to me, Kambree. You will not win if you go up against the Kings!” She says worriedly. 

What I want to do is scream and cry that I don’t have a f**king choice, but I remain calm and try to give her my best smile, “I know what I’m doing but thank you for caring enough to look out for me.” 

She sighs heavily, “Fine, but know that I’m here for you and will help where I can.” 

I bring her in for a hug, “Thank you. That’s all I need, Paxtyn.” 

“Now, how about we move to the bathroom down the hall to do your makeup. There is a lot more room and the lighting is so much better.” She snickers as she looks around the tiny room once again. 

All three Kings are waiting in the living room when we come towards the front door. Paxtyn wasn’t invited to the party, so she is heading home and I’m wishing that I could just go with her. Especially with the way the guys are eating me alive with how their eyes rake over my b*dy. 

I’m just opening the door for my friend when Xander’s voice comes out loud and clear, “I see panty lines under the dress, Bree. You’re going to need to remove them.”

I close my eyes, wishing I could be anywhere but here. The fact that he says this in front of my only friend only makes it ten times worse. Remembering the deal we had, which now, I know why he worded it the way he had, I can’t do anything but give him the answer he is expecting. 

“Okay, Xander, I will.” 

Paxtyn’s eyes burn with 

anger and 

stead of walking out the door, she 

slams it back closed and glares daggers at her old friend, “What is wrong with you? You never used to treat a female as badly as you treat Kambree!” 

“Mind your own business, Pax.” My stepbrother growls. 

“No! Your mother would be ashamed of how you have turned out…” 

She isn’t able to get anymore out because Xander is there in front of her, pinning her against the wall by the door, “If you know what’s good for you, then you will leave, and if you ever bring up my mother again, I will make sure that you never see Bree again!” He snarls and then. opens the door, shoving Paxtyn through it and then slamming it in her face. He then turns back to me, but I know better than to say anything, “Now, be a good girl and take off those f**king panties!” 

His tone makes me tremble as I nod and does as he asks. All three watch me pull off the thongs I had thrown on in hopes that they wouldn’t show but I see now that it was no use. Xander holds his hand out and I place them in his open palm, giving him yet, another pair of my panties. He pockets them just like he had the first pair and then grins down at me. 

“Your job is to let the guests in when they arrive and then you are to stay by our side through the duration of the party. You will do as we say and act as the pretty little hostess to our guests. You will not embarrass us or there will be consequences.

“Yes, Xander.” 

He reaches up and tucks a piece of hair behind my ear, “You clean up very nicely, Bree. If you do well tonight, we will move you to another. room in the house. You would like that, wouldn’t you?” 

“Yes, very much so.” I respond with a little smile. I don’t dare get my hopes up, though. 

“Good. Trip will stand with you at the door as guests arrive. After all, we wouldn’t want any of them getting handsy with our girl, now, would we?” He winks at me and then turns to go but I stop him. 

“What is the purpose of having me here at your party?” I’m really curious as to why they would want me around them at all when they didn’t even want me here in the first place, but oh, I should have known better than to ask. 

My stepbrother turns back and gives me a genuine smile, “Well, to show off our shiny new toy, of course.’
