Chapter 16 

Maybe some of you don’t know this, but in our little corner of Vermont, families own the towns. There are the five major ones around us, Whitehaven, Hillcrest, Crestwood, Raven Falls, and Hampshire; these are the towns that matter the most because the families that own them go back to the beginning to when the towns were first built. What started out as a friendship between six, ended in a tragedy, causing the 

to go their separate ways and building 

the towns that are now known as “The Circle‘; Hillcrest, the town my family owns, sits smack dab in the middle of the other four. I don’t know the whole story on how the towns actually came to be, only those that run the towns now, know, and past relatives. Once I step into my grandfather’s position, all the secrets will be passed down for me to keep safe. 

My father should have been the next in line, only a car accident took his life a few years back, passing the inheritance down to his only living heir, me. My mother was pissed when she found out that she couldn’t take my father’s spot, but only those that have the blood of a Hayes running through their veins may take the throne, as I like to call it. It wasn’t my first choice with what I wanted to do with my life, but now it’s my only choice. 

Xander is also next in line to take over Whitehaven when the time comes. I don’t know the other heirs to the other towns as of yet, but I will eventually. Each town has their own little secrets, this I’ve learned early on. I’ve never been one to really want to know any of the other town’s business, but now that I’m in Whitehaven, I feel like I should try to learn what it is they are hiding because whatever it is, I believe that Xander, Garrett and Trip are already a huge part of it.

It’s been almost a week since they left me sitting on the floor in the family room. They didn’t return until after midnight, and I only know this because I had felt my bed dip when Xander sat on the edge. He doesn’t know that he had woken me, but I remember trying to keep my breathing even as I felt him pick up a few strands of my hair and play with it a moment. He sighed heavily before getting up and returning to his own room via the bathroom. I still wonder what that was all about, 

but of course, I don’t dare ask them. 

Garrett is driving me to classes today because Xander has to takes care. of some business since Jonas isn’t back yet. I don’t mind being around Garrett because as long as I’m being good, he treats me like a real human being. 

“How about we skip our last class today and go see the matinee, I hear

movies, don’t you?” He asks with a smile plastered to his face. 

I have to laugh, “Yes, but apparently not as much as you do!” 

“I live for scary movies; Halloween is my favorite holiday of all time. Oh, that reminds me, we throw a huge costume party every year, so we need to start thinking of a group costume theme.” 

“Seriously? I love Halloween, and dressing up, scaring little kids…” 

“You? Little Miss Sunshine loves to scare kids?” He asks amusingly. 

“Well, nob*dy knows it’s me, duh! That’s the best part of the holiday; dressing up and pretending to be a whole different person.” 

“I get that, I do.” He grins, showing me the cute little dimple he has. 

“So, any costume ideas yet?” 

“There’s been a few but nothing solid.”

“Do I get a say in any of this?” I ask grinning. 

“You can give ideas, but we have the final say and you don’t find out until it’s time to dress for the party.” His smirk says it all. 

“Why do I get the feeling that I’m most likely going to end up half N*ked?” I chuckle. 

“We dress you how we want because we like looking at you that way, Kammy.” Garrett gets all serious on me, “You should feel privileged because we never show this much attention to women.” 

I want to scoff but I figure that it’s safer if I don’t, “Then why me?” 

He pulls into his parking space and turns my way, “Why not you, Kammy. You’re beautiful, smart, and have a rocking bod on top of it all. You’re innocent,” his smile turns devious, “and we like to corrupt the innocent.”

He hops out, leaving me to stare after him. I fully believe every that he just said. One thing that I have learned about the Kings is they don’t lie, at least I haven’t caught them in one as of yet. Although, I would also like to say that they don’t pretend to be someone they’re not, but then there are times where I see bits of a different person in little things that they do. I have seen it with both Xander and Garrett; Trip, I truly believe that he’s a douchebag through and through, and just likes to fuck with people. 

Garrett is standing out there, staring back at me and holding his arms out wide, smiling, waiting for me to get out. Returning his smile, I shake my head and jump out of his jeep. Tossing his arm across my shoulders, we look like we are an actual couple and the other students gawk at the sight of us walking down the halls together like this. Instead of being embarrassed, though, I feel powerful, knowing that I am part of their little group, even if others don’t know the extent to

“So, is this like a date?” I ask Garrett as we walk into the theater. 

“Do you want it to be a date?” He snickers and holds the door open for me like a true gentleman. 

“I don’t know what I want it to be, if I’m being completely honest with you, and I’ve never been on one, so I don’t know what they’re like.” 

He stops, “You have never been on a date before?” 

“No, I never had time between my studies and learning the business.” 

“Awe.” he places his hand over his chest, “So, if I declare this a date, then I will be your first?” 

His little performance makes me giggle, “Yes, Garrett, you will be my first.” 

Something passes across his face and his expression turns a bit more lustful, but he keeps his words light, “I will leave that decision up to you, but you should know, that I always k*ss on the first date.” He winks and then walks ahead to order our popcorn and drinks. 

Tingles run through me at the thought of Garrett k*ssing me, but am I ready for that? Do I want to go down that road with any of the Kings, knowing that they are only using me for a bet? When Garrett comes back with our refreshments, he’s got his smile in place once again. I take my drink from him and follow him into the theater that is showing the scary movie that he wanted to see. 

Garrett actually behaves himself throughout the whole movie, and he is

very invested in watching it. If I had thought that he was only trying to get me into a darkened room, so he can try something with me, it‘ has completely vanished. He really did want to come watch this movie, and- I am able to sit back and enjoy it myself without being on guard. 

Once the movie is over, Garrett grabs all of our trash and tosses it in the trash bin on our way out. There aren’t many people that came to see this movie, so there is no crowd all trying to leave at once. Garrett still takes my hand, though, and walks me out of the theater and out into the bright sunshine. Once we’re at his jeep, he unlocks the doors and opens the passenger door for me but then stops me from getting in. 

He backs me up against the seat and places a hand on my hip, “Kammy, I was serious about k*ssing on the first date.” 

“I never said whether this was a date or not, though.” I respond just above a whisper. 

His mouth kicks up into a half grim, “You didn’t, did you?” 

I shake my head back and forth, not taking my eyes off of his hazel 

ones. 

“Well, I want to thank you for coming with me. The guys aren’t into any of these kinds of movies, so I always watch them by myself.” 

“I don’t mind being your movie buddy if you need one.” Both my heart and my core are beginning to throb with what I think is going to happen in just a moment. 

“I’m going to take you up on that, but I still want to thank you properly.” His head descends as he watches me, probably to see if I’m going to freak out. 

I should push him away, but deep down, I know I want him to k*ss me, even though I know his agenda. I watch his lips come down and I part

mine just barely. His lips are soft once they finally press against mine and I close my eyes. His other hand comes up to cup my cheek as he adds just a little more pressure to my lips. He doesn’t demand entrance, but I open for him anyway. I’ve never k*ssed anyone before, so I’m hoping that I’m doing this right. 

He groans as soon as his tongue enters and clashes with my own. Pressing his b*dy against mine, I can feel all of the hard lines that make up the muscle that he’s got going on. A moan slips from my own lips as he deepens the k*ss just a little more and I begin to feel a new hardness press into me. 

Pulling away from me unexpectedly, he presses his forehead against mine, “We should get home, the guys are expecting us for supper. 

I nod, “Yeah, okay.” 

“Thank you for this, Kammy.” He doesn’t say what he’s thanking me for, but I have a feeling that it’s for all of it, the movie, the companionship, and the k*ss. 

“You’re welcome, Garrett.
