Providence, Rhode Island

Tempest looked around as he walked through the foggy forest. He was not happy at all. “Enough of your silly games!” He shouted before his eyes glowed an emerald green. The sound of growling could be heard.

The fog cleared to reveal Shub-Niggurath. She had roots reaching the closest trees, most likely to use them as weapons if needed. The Old One was growling at Tempest.

“I thought I told you to capture anyone who snooped into the disappearance of Cassidy and Nichallo.” Tempest told the Old One. He wasn’t scared of the Old One and he was armed with his magic in case the Old One tried to attack him. “Care to explain how they’re still out there somewhere and how you’ve failed to capture them?”

Shub-Niggurath growled and pointed at Tempest.

“You’re blaming me?” Tempest demanded. He understood what the Old One was saying. “How is it my fault that a little girl, a child with no magical powers mind you, was able to escape a powerful being such as yourself?” He was curious how Shub-Niggurath was going to try to turn this around.

“She believes its your fault because you didn’t think this plan through.” A male voice said. Nyarlathotep appeared out of thin air. He was in his suit still. “She and I both believe that you should have had done something about Elizabeth before going after Nichallo and Cassidy.”

Tempest glared at Nyarlathotep. “I don’t recall inviting you to this meeting.” He told the Old One.

Nyarlathotep crossed his arms over his chest. “And here I thought you would want to hear the latest report about Carver and his friends.” He told Mr. Tempest. He turned as if to leave.

“What is the latest report?” Tempest demanded. “We need to find them before they can stop us from releasing the rest of your kind.”

Nyarlathotep looked at Shub-Niggurath. The tree like Old One nodded to him. Nyarlathotep looked at Tempest. “The four are no longer in the city.” He told Tempest. “According to all of my spies and contacts, the four were seen fleeing Brooklyn before they disappeared on the highway. The local police are searching for Molly, the supposed to be new Silver Child, on behalf of her mother who believes that Satanists have kidnapped her child.”

Tempest kept his mouth shut as he processed what Nyarlathotep was telling him. He didn’t want to go flying off the handle. He realized that he should have expected the mother of the new Silver Child to pester the police to find her daughter. That just made things a lot harder. He knew that he couldn’t order the police or the feds to not look for her without raising suspicion on what he was doing.

That was when he thought of something. “Shub-Niggurath, while we wait for Carver and his friends to come out of hiding, go pay Molly’s mother a visit.” He smiled wickedly. “With the mother’s death, we might be able to force the new Silver Child out of hiding whether she does it willingly or forced.”

He waited until Shub-Niggurath vanished into the fog before he turned to Nyarlathotep. “Wait until Shub-Niggurath has killed Molly’s mother to tell our two operatives to announce to the public that the girl’s mother was murdered. They should have an easier time finding the girl.” He knew that Molly would be put on every news channel that would cover the murder of her mother. Carver wouldn’t be able to keep the child hidden for long.

At the Lovecraft Estate, Nichallo was meditating. He figured that since he was wrapped up in wooden branches and didn’t have a vehicle to get away in, he would try to figure out who Tempest really was. He didn’t have a lot to go with. Just that Tempest seemed to know a lot about Cassidy and him, that this all had something to do with Lovecraft since they were in the same room he had killed Lovecraft in and that somehow the entire world was supposed to know who Tempest really was.

Nichallo thought of the many mortals and immortals that he had encountered over his many years of being alive. He didn’t remember telling any of them about him being the real reason Lovecraft had died. He also didn’t remember seeing anyone else in the house when he had killed Lovecraft.

Nichallo looked around the room. There weren’t any clues that indicated a connection between Tempest and Lovecraft. He couldn’t help but wonder why Tempest had wanted the house. There had to be more to it than just wanting a place far from New York City to keep Cassidy and him locked up in.

Cassidy looked at him. “Trying to figure out a way to escape?” She asked before she shook her head. She had already tried to use her magic to escape All that had happened was the tree had tightened its grip on her. “We’re not going anywhere for a while Nichallo so let’s try to figure out why we’re here.”

She looked around the room. “Where exactly are we?” She asked. “We’re not in New York City, that much I can tell.” She looked at the floor. “I hope that Tempest owns this building or else the real owner will be in for a shock when the get back.” She remembered how Tempest had said something about being in the home of someone who was supposed to be famous but she didn’t believe that a famous person would let another person destroy the floor of their home.

“The real owner as you put it has been dead for decades.” Nichallo told her. “This was the home of HP Lovecraft, the author and basically the creator of all things Cthulhu Mythos related until he died. The town bought the home from his aunt who was the actual owner and made it an important landmark. I don’t know how Tempest got a hold of it but he did.”

Cassidy shook her head. “Lovecraft’s home?” She asked. So Tempest had been telling the truth. “Why would Tempest bring us all the way up here?” Something wasn’t adding up. She knew of a lot better hiding places back in New York City to keep someone locked up in. What made the home of some author so important?

“Probably because I was here the night Lovecraft died.” Nichallo replied. He didn’t want to tell Cassidy the truth but he had a feeling Tempest knew the truth.

“Tempest did say you did something to Lovecraft.” Cassidy said as she remembered the conversation from the day before. “But didn’t the guy die of natural causes like most authors do?” That was what she had learned in her one literature class in college. Just about every author she had learned about who had died, had died of natural causes.

Nichallo grimaced a little. “Not exactly. That story was made by a spell I made after I had killed him.” He confessed.

There was an awkward silence in the room. Nichallo could tell that Cassidy was processing what he had said. He didn’t blame her. He had just changed everything she had known about Lovecraft.

“You killed Lovecraft?” Cassidy asked in disbelief. “Why though?”

Nichallo knew that he had no choice but to tell Cassidy the truth. “Basically everything that the world thinks they know about Lovecraft for the most part is a lie.” He told Cassidy. “The truth is, he was a servant of the Old Ones, what you would call the Cthulhu Mythos. Those monsters are quite real and they existed thousands of years before the Dark Ones before they were sealed away in R’lyeh.”

“R’lyeh?” Cassidy asked. “I’ve never heard of that place.”

“You have heard of it, just not by that name. You, along with the rest of the world knows of it as Atlantis, the lost city.” Nichallo explained. “The Old Ones ruled the world from it until it sank with them on it, locking them away from the rest of the world.” Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the Find_Nøvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Hold on, you’re telling me that every story about Atlantis is a lie?” Cassidy asked. “Nichallo, are there any myths or legends that aren’t fabricated?” Even though she was the Golden Child and had faced the Dark Ones, she needed to know that not everything was a lie.

“There are myths and legends that are true just as they are described in the stories.” Nichallo assured her. “Let me start this all over, okay?” Seeing that he had Cassidy’s attention, Nichallo started his explanation. “The Old Ones existed thousands of years before the Dark Ones. They ruled the world from R’lyeh. They were worst than the Dark Ones and no one thought they could be defeated.”

“That all changed though because of a Silver Child long before it was discovered how powerful Golden and Silver children were. A Silver Child, possibly the very first one recorded in history, used great amount of elemental magic to sink R’lyeh with the Old Ones trapped on the island. In an attempt to wipe out all traces of the Old Ones, the ancestors of the humans today, started calling the lost city Atlantis and said it was in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere. R’lyeh though was really in the Pacific Ocean, so of course, humanity has always searched in the wrong location for the sunken city.” Nichallo said.

“If humanity back then wiped out all traces of the Old Ones, how did you know Lovecraft was writing about them in his books?” Cassidy asked. Something wasn’t adding up there.

“At first I wasn’t sure if Lovecraft’s The Call of the Cthulhu was about the Old Ones or not. Once I had a copy of it and had read it, I realized that not only did he have the description of Cthulhu, the king of the Old Ones down perfectly, he also had the name of the Great Old One and the name of the lost city that no one was supposed to know.” Nichallo explained.

“What happened next?” Cassidy asked.

Nichallo sighed. “I went to confront Lovecraft. He was living in this house at the time. I knew that he had been compromised by the Old Ones. According to everyone in the town, he was acting strange, spoke of the End of Days which sounded a lot like the legends of how the Old Ones would end the world.” Nichallo thought about that night. “It was storming that night. I came here and caught Lovecraft trying to release the Old Ones from their prison. In the struggle between him and me, I ended up killing him, stopping him from releasing the Old Ones.”

“But you didn’t stop him from releasing a few of the Old Ones.” Tempest said as he came into the room, startling the two. “Once they were free, they started having an effect on the world.” He smiled wickedly. “Shub-Niggurath, the Old One of the forest, picked up where she left off with Aokigahara in Japan for starters.”

“The forest of the dead in Japan?” Cassidy asked as her heart sank. She had heard of the evil forest. People who went in there rarely came out alive.

Tempest looked at Cassidy. “Of course.” He replied. “Even though the forest is thought to be thousands of years old and formed naturally, it was actually created by Shub-Niggurath originally. She was keen on getting power from it.” He laughed and went to the window. “Despite the efforts of humanity’s ancestors, the Old Ones still had a presence in this world from the effect they had on it.”

Tempest turned to the two. “Soon, the Old Ones will be released and they will take over this world like they were always meant to.” He said before he smiled. “Everything people like you have done to try to keep people from knowing the truth was done in vain.” With that, Tempest walked out of the room.

Cassidy looked at Nichallo. “You know, after everything that happened to me as a child, you would think that I couldn’t be surprised by any of them.” She said.

Nichallo nodded. “Oh, I know.” He said. “It took me thousands of years to get used to things as well.”
