Chapter Twenty Six

An hour later, Hamilton and Rivers were standing outside an apartment door. Detective Hamilton knew that it was nearly midnight but he wasn’t about to stop his investigation. He needed to know if Rivers was right about Molly being really Carver and Skye’s daughter.

Hamilton knocked on Doctor Miller’s door loudly, causing a few tenants to come out of their room.

“Police business, go back inside.” Rivers ordered. The last thing he wanted was casualties if the doctor fought them. He held his badge up as proof. “Seems like no one likes having guests this late at night.” He said.

“Yeah, well their preference doesn’t mean a thing if there’s an accomplice to a kidnapping whether it was years ago or just in the last few days.” Detective Hamilton replied. If Molly and Jane were really the same girl, Doctor Miller could very well be the kidnapper and murderer that they were looking for. It would make sense that, if Skye had discovered the truth about her daughter, Doctor Miller would kill her to keep it buried for his sister and him.

Detective Hamilton pounded on the door. “Doctor Henry Miller, open the door now! This is the NYPD!” He shouted.

“Pretty sure him not replying or opening this door is all the proof we need that he is guilty of a kidnapping.” Rivers said before he kicked the door down.

Detective Hamilton was about to say something about the doctor possibly being asleep but he stopped once he saw Rivers tackle a man down to the floor. “What’s up Doc?” He asked Doctor Miller as Rivers handcuffed the man. “We need to have a talk.”

A few minutes later, the three were in Doctor Miller’s living room. Doctor Miller was sitting in his chair with his hands handcuffed together. He had an annoyed look on his face.

“Doctor Henry Miller.” Detective Hamilton said. “You’ve been acting suspicious as of late. Your niece goes missing and then the next day, your sister is brutally murdered.” He let that sink in before continuing. “And yet you’re the only family member who didn’t give a statement or called for an update. Care to explain that?”

“There was nothing to talk about.” Doctor Miller replied. “I haven’t spoken to my sister in the last few years.” He shrugged. “I wouldn’t have been able to help you find Molly or my sister’s killer.”

“Well maybe you can help us with finding a possible lead.” Detective Hamilton said. He wasn’t about to let the doctor off the hook. He took his phone out and brought up pictures of his missing people. “Besides Molly, do you recognize any of these people?”

“Are you sure?” Detective Hamilton asked. He motioned to Rivers. “Because we found something interesting while looking for any possible leads as to your niece’s abduction and your sister’s murder.” He took a file from Rivers. “According to this, you signed the death certificate for a Jane Matthews on the same day she was born and signed a birth certificate for your niece on that very same day.”

“So? Several babies are born on the same day.” Doctor Miller said. He didn’t like where this was going.

“Except for this.” Detective Hamilton said as he flipped to the next page. “According to you, there was a mishap with paperwork and Jane Matthew’s body was cremated at the hospital after being declared dead so the Matthews didn’t even bring home a baby to bury.”

“The Matthews requested their child to be cremated.” Doctor Miller said. “They simply forgot because of the traumatic miscarriage.”

“Unlikely.” Rivers said. “You see, according to this file, Carver took the hospital to court for mishandling the body of the baby. At which time, you decided to take time away and didn’t return to work until after the Matthews reached a settlement.”

Doctor Miller looked at the two detectives. “So according to you two, I kidnapped the Matthews’ daughter as a baby, wrote up a death certificate and made some paperwork that said her body was cremated just to hide the fact that I gave her to my sister to raised?” He asked before he laughed. “Here I thought you guys were supposed to use facts to solve cases.”

“Who was your sister’s husband?” Detective Hamilton asked.

“I thought you said that you guys had spoken to every family member but me.” Doctor Miller said. He was determined to hide his secret.

“We did.” Rivers replied. “Which is why we know that the so called husband your wife was married to was never real. No record of him, no sign that he even existed.”

Doctor Miller remained quiet.

“Your sister wanted a child but, because of how much of a egotistical and religious woman she was, no one wanted to be with her. You decided to help her out by falsifying records and kidnapping a baby girl that had been born that day. You disappeared under the claim that the family was taking celebrating Molly’s birth and didn’t return until the Matthews agreed not to take things to court.” Detective Hamilton said.

“You can’t prove anything.” Doctor Miller said.

“Actually we can.” Rivers said. “We can prove your sister was a single woman the entire time, we can prove that the man she claimed existed, never existed to begin with, and that, once we find Molly and do a DNA test, we’ll see that she is really Carver’s daughter.”

“Doctor Henry Miller, you are under arrest for kidnapping and obstruction of justice.” Detective Hamilton said before the two detectives escorted Doctor Miller out of the apartment.
