The Little Fairy
Chapter 21

I made my way back to the house, heartbroken. I walked into the clearing; seeing Sarah, Don, and Coon sitting on the front porch made me smile. They've given everything to me but also everything up for me. They've become my second family. Sarah saw me and stood up to wave at me. I smiled and gave her a small wave back, starting to head my way over to them.

"Did you hear that boom? It sounded so close!" Sarah wrapped me in a hug. She ran her hands over my back and stopped, patting the mounds that weren't there before. "What-" She spun me around and lifted my shirt, seeing the Navy feathers that peeked out from the bottom.

"I got my wings!" I grinned widely, shaking them out of the slits that they made in my shirt. They stood tall around me, blanketing us in shade from the sun.

They stood in awe, Sarah slid her fingers over some of the feathers. "Was that what that noise was?"

I nodded and looked up at the sky, seeing the last of the fairies fade out of view. "I stood up for myself against the elders and I guess that's what I needed for my wings to come back." I set my eyes back on Sarah, hers were glazed over in admiration.

"What's up with the cicadas? It's not their season." Don piped in, a worried look on his face.

"Those aren't cicadas. They're fairies." I smiled, shivering at Sarah's touch.

Sarah stopped and stepped back from me so I could pull my wings back in. "Fairies? There's hundreds of them!" She looked up at the sky, trying to see if she could see any more.

"There's hundred of Fairies in my backyard and I didn't even know?" Don finally stood, coming down from the porch to greet me with a hug.

"I'll explain everything in a little bit, but right now I'm starving." I took their hands in mine and led them back into the house for some dinner.

After a peaceful and informative dinner, Sarah and I decided to go upstairs to listen to some music to wind down for the night. "Do you miss your family?" She asked, propping herself up on her side. "Yeah, a lot. It was really nice to be able to see them again." I stared at the ceiling, classical music flowing into my ears gently. "I hope I get to see them again soon." I folded my hands across my stomach.

"I hope I get to meet them." I could tell she was smiling and I didn't even have to look at her. Sarah was almost always smiling, something so infectious; her positivity radiated off of her.

"I hope you get to meet them too. I'm sure they would love you." I turned over to her propping myself like she was. "I never did ask why you wanted to help me this entire time." I studied her features, her smile barely wavered as she thought.

"I always wanted to do something big in this world, but I never got the chance to. Accounting was always the backup plan and unfortunately, I had to take it." This time she laid down on her back and stared at the ceiling and outstretched her arms across the length of the bed. "But then you came along and I finally felt like I had a purpose in life."

"So you're living your life through me." I stated, a bit puzzled.

"No, I wouldn't say that." She turned her head to look at me. "More like I'm living my life with you. You've shown me so much in just a few short months. Everything that I was missing in my life has finally pulled itself together and I'm just enjoying it right now," she sighed.

I nodded and got out of her bed, the springs squeaking in protest to my movement. "I think I better go to sleep early tonight. We have a busy day on the farm tomorrow." I winked and left her room, plopping myself on my bed after I entered mine. My back ached still and I knew I was probably going to need some pain medicine in the morning.

I fell asleep quickly still laying on my stomach and my legs half dangling off the side of the bed. I left the door open a little bit for Coon to come to sleep with me if he wanted to; he usually did. It was a powerful day and I hope I didn't just send my entire village of fairies to their doom.
