Chapter 9

I couldn’t believe how casually Victor recited the sacred wedding vows. The way he seemed to mock and insult love and marriage was despicable. I got to my feet and put my hands on my hips.

“Victor, how could you so carelessly make promises to me like that?” I asked. “Is being the leader of the United Association of Alphas so important to you that you feel it’s okay to make fim of something that means a great to me?”

Victor stood and moved closer until his face was inches from mine. “Daisy, try to understand. Your rejection of me will hurt my public image. And I must be the next leader of the United Association of Alphas. Without the power of the office of the alliance’s leader, I won’t be able to help others of our kind.”

He placed a hand on my shoulder. “Power and wealth are the most important things a man can achieve. They are tools that will help me positively change our world.”

I pulled away, “You can’t expect me to believe that the world be a better place.”

you want to marry me just to help.

“Power and responsibility go hand in hand, Daisy. You aren’t taking your responsibilities seriously.”

A knock on the living room door ended the discussion. Victor opened the door and let the Benson into the room.

“I’ve been instructed to take Miss Wilson to her adoptive parents‘ house to pack her things and move them here.”

Victor stepped aside politely. “We will talk later,” he told Daisy. “Think about my words.”

Benson escorted me to my adoptive parents‘ house in the limousine. Another car that held four of the servants followed us.

At Cecilia and Andrew’s home, I showed the servants to my bedroom, and they began to pack my things. But I never realized how few possessions I owned. Other than my books, I had very little that I wanted to take with me to my new life.

One box was all that was needed for my few items of clothing. I owned only some old T–shirts and worn–out jeans, so it took less than half an hour for the servants to pack four boxes.

One servant pulled a bag of colorful candies from a nightstand drawer. The candy looked dry and unappealing. “This candy is too old to eat,” the servant said. “The date

on the bag says it has expired, Miss Wilson. You shouldn’t eat it now.” The servant began to throw the candy into a trash bag.

Panic made me rush over and grab the bag of candy. It wasn’t something I planned to eat, but I couldn’t bear the thought of the candy being thrown away.

It was a keepsake that I planned to hang onto forever, because it was a little present from…someone special.

“I will take care of the candy,” I told the servant and stuffed, the bag into my pocket.

Thank you.”

As the servants carried the boxes from the house, Cecilia and Andrew tried to act as if they were heartbroken because I was leaving. I shook my head, amazed by their crocodile tears.

They immediately cheered up when Benson politely handed them an envelope.

At first, Andrew told Benson they didn’t want the money in the envelope. “Daisy was a cherished member of our family,” he insisted.

But Cecilia had no problem accepting the envelope of cash. “This money will help put Andrea through school,” she told Benson. “Isn’t that a good idea, Daisy?”

“I don’t want anything from her, Mom,” Andrea snapped. “She may be Alberta Wilson. but she’s still nob*dy. Victor Klein only wants her for her father’s money and position.”

I stifled a giggle when Cecilia covered Andrea’s mouth with her hand.

“Hush, Andrea.” Cecilia scolded her daughter. “I’m sure you’ll miss your adopted sister, but that’s no reason to be rude. Let’s wish Daisy well before she leaves to start her new life.”

She sent Andrea to her room and gave Daisy a phony smile. “Please come back and visit with us, Daisy dear. We would love to see you when you have the time.”

When I returned to the limousine, Benson handed me a debit card. “Mr. Wilson instructed me to give you this card,” Benson explained. “There are three million dollars in that account. He said it’s your pocket money. You are to spend it on anything you may want or need.”

“Oh…wow,” I whispered as I took the card from Benson’s hand. Three million dollars for pocket money was unbelievable! “Wh..What do I spend this much money on?” I asked

Benson.

“Spend it on whatever you wish, Miss,” he replied. “Mr. Wilson wants to be sure you can -buy anything you desire.”

I was stunned by Alex’s gift. Even if I worked twenty–four hours a day every day for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t earn anywhere close to the money Alex had given me for pocket money.

When we returned to the mansion, Benson asked me if I had any requests concerning my bedroom. There were many bedrooms available, and I could choose whichever I wanted.

“I love to read, and I could use a place to study and do my homework,” I told Benson.

“Very good, Miss,” Benson replied. “There is a lovely bedroom near the library. You’ll enjoy the library. It’s filled with books that belonged to your ancestors and newer books. that the current master purchased.”

Please follow me, Miss Wilson,” Benson said as he led me upstairs to a gorgeous bedroom luxuriously decorated in shades of pink and cream. “This room also has its own balcony. The view is spectacular, especially at sunrise.”

Benson pulled open the drapes and revealed double glass doors and a balcony with a spectacular view of the valley and the mountains to the east.

“The library is the next door down the hall on your left,” he added. “If you require anything or need assistance from one of the staff, just push the button on the wall near the headboard of your bed.”

“Thank you,” I said, eager to explore my new surroundings. After a look around my new bedroom, I hurried down the hall to the library.

The library door creaked slightly when I turned the knob. Yet when I pushed open the door, the glorious smell of books invaded my nostrils. A giggle escaped my throat as I scurried inside the room.

There were hundreds of books on the shelves that lined three walls of the room. A fireplace took up most of the fourth wall. There were heavy silver candlesticks and a clock that chimes the hour arranged on the mantle.

There was also a rolling ladder that gave access to the higher bookshelves, a polished wooden desk and a chair, and an overstuffed couch and reclining chair.

It was a special place where I would be spending much of

my

time.

I examined the books until a young maid knocked on the door. “Pardon me, Miss,” she said. “But several pots of flowers were delivered for you. We put them in your bedroom. Would you tell me how you want them to be displayed?”

I followed her back to my bedroom and was delighted by the pots of colorful flowers perfuming the air. They were all different varieties of daisies, and a card was lying next

to the largest pot.

The card read. “I find these flowers much more suitable for you than ordinary roses. You’re as beautiful and unique as these flowers. My fondest regards. Victor.”

My heart skipped a beat as a warm sensation dooded my b*dy. No one had ever shown me attention like this before. It was a wonderful fee

I reread the card twice and then examined each pat gesture. I admitted to myself, unable to keep a smile from

face.

The maid was still waiting for my instructions. I told her the daisies were fine where she had placed them. After she left the room. I straightened a pot of pink and purple blooms. They were perfect for me, much better than roses.

If only a man other than Victor was pursuing me. I still didnt

t trust bom. Although he may not be as bad as I’d thought, Victor and I are too different so be happy together.

I sighed as I touched the daisy’s soft petals.
