Derek stood between us fuming. I must have been so lost in my conversation with Zander that I didn’t even realize when he walked up to us. His chest was heaving and the vein at his left temple was pulsing and looked like it was ready to burst at any second.
Fear gripped me because I didn’t know what he would do. Derek can be volatile when he is angry. I snuck a look at Zander only to see that he was the epitome of calm and collected.
The little interaction drew the attention of everyone and the ballroom went as silent as a graveyard.
I tried to pull my hand out of Derek’s grip but it was as tight as a rock, “Let me go.”
“Shut up,” he growled at me.
“You’re hurting me.” I tried again but he held onto me tighter.
“Let go of her,” Zander uttered his first words since Derek appeared and I was shocked that they were in my defense.
“You have no place here,” Derek spat at Zander, “She is my mate and I will do with her as I please.”
The collective gasp that went through the room was loud. Immediately people began whispering and all I wanted was to crawl into a hole and disappear.
Zander turned to me with a blank expression and I tried to convey to him that it was all a misunderstanding but Derek kept blocking my view of him.
I was so focused on trying to get to Zander that I didn’t realize when my best friends rushed up to me. Their presence was a shock to all of us that Derek released my hand a little and I was able to pull my hand out of his grip.
Rachel instantly wrapped her arms around my shoulders, “What is he talking about?”

“Tell us it’s a lie.” Anastasia implored but all I could do was shake my head.

Before anyone else could speak, the door to the ballroom opened and two figures walked in. As they closed in on us I recognized them as Damien and Daniella- Derek’s older siblings. They took in the scene in front of them and their eyes hardened.
“Let us take this outside,” Damien’s voice was calm and collected- a complete contrast to the scene taking place.
“No,” Zander’s voice was a clear order and all Damien could do was stare, “If he wants to make a scene then he should go ahead.”
“It’s not a scene; she is my mate,” Derek made his way towards me but Anastasia stepped in his way.
“Try me bitch,” she turned to me, “Tell me he’s lying.”
“He’s telling the truth.” Anastasia gasped, “But I don’t want him and he doesn’t want me.”
“What are you talking about Lyla?” it was Zander’s soft voice that had me spilling everything.
I wanted to tell them everything that had happened between us all. How he and Alexis had treated me and how badly I felt about it but my pride wouldn’t allow it so I simply told them that we were mates and he had chosen Alexis over me
numerous times.
By the time I was done speaking, the entire hall was silent and Danielle had a look of pure disgust on her face. She walked up to her younger brother and slapped
him across the face.
“Have you no shame, Derek?” she spat at him, “How dare you treat your mate that way? We trained you better.”
“She is mine and I refuse to be told what to do. I am the son of an Alpha.”
“You are a disgrace Derek,” Damien said with equal disgust, “You have two options; you can take her as your mate and be faithful to her or you reject her. You cannot have both her and Alexis.”

“You cannot force me to reject her,” Derek sounded like a child who was having his favorite toy taken away from him, “I will have her and Alexis and there is nothing that anyone can do about it.”
I looked to Damien hoping that he would say something about it but he was silent. He shot me a look of pity and I knew that Derek was right. No one could force him to reject me and until he did so, I was legally his mate. If I tried to take another mate, he had the full right to stop me. I was officially his property and there was nothing I could do about it.
Tears started to fill my eyes as I realized the full extent of my situation. For the rest of my life, I will be tied to Derek and have to watch him mate with Alexis. I had made up my mind that no matter what, I would leave whether he rejected me or
not
“Stop crying,” I didn’t notice Helena walking up to me, “Mascara is way too expensive to waste on an overgrown man child.”
“How dare you speak to me like that? I will-,” Derek began but she cut him off by raising a hand to his face.
“I am not your pack member; neither am I a child. If you try to speak to me like that. again, I will pull out your spine from your back with my bare hands. Are we clear?”
Embarrassment flushed up his cheeks and I couldn’t help the small smile that grew on my lips. She gave me a warm look and that was when I noticed Zander walk up towards Derek and his family.
“You refuse to reject her; is that right?” he asked and Derek nodded.
“She is mine,” he banged his palm against his chest, “I won’t do it.”
Zander turned to me, “If you don’t want to be with him then you can reject him.”
