Chapter 71

Leonard snorted, thinking Lisa could be a fool at times.

‘One way to see Lisa is as someone who loves money, since she married me on my deathbed for a mere two million dollars. The other way is that she doesn’t care about money, which only means she’s clever and knows how to manipulate me.

‘Once she’s Mrs. Parker, she won’t settle for just two million dollars. Even fifty million wouldn’t be enough. But then again, she’s nagging me about getting a divorce. She seems more impatient about it than me!’

As Leonard contemplated, he realized something was wrong. He squinted at Lisa in suspicion, making her uneasy.

“I swear, I never thought improperly about you.” Lisa said, wishing she could make the swearing hand gesture.

“Lisa, be honest with me.” Leonard leaned closer, staring into her eyes intently. “Did you marry me because you thought I’d die, and you could take the two million to get your freedom?”

Lisa was dumbfounded. ‘How did he know?’

“N-No, how could I?” Lisa awkwardly shrugged.

Leonard sneered, “You look so fake when you lie.”

Realizing she could not hide it, Lisa confessed, “It had been the talk of the town. They said you wouldn’t survive, and even the doctors told your family to plan for your funeral.

“I didn’t want to marry you, but I was afraid of offending your family. The temptation of two million was there, and I thought you were done for.

“I just had to get a marriage certificate to become a widow, and I’ll be free again. That way, I could take the money without offending your family. But then you woke up.”

She expected Leonard’s rage. However, after waiting for a while, all Leonard showed was an unpleasant expression. Lisa hesitantly asked, “Aren’t you angry?”

Leonard replied flatly, “Didn’t you say it yourself? Why would you agree to marry someone on the verge of death, if not for the two million?”

Oh, but you were quite angry the last time I brought it up,” Lisa remarked.

Leonard thought for a while and then said, “Maybe I’ve accepted reality so much that I’m numb to it.”

Lísa looked at him and started laughing. However, as soon as she laughed, pain shot through her.

“Quit laughing. You look ugly,” Leonard commented.

Lisa instantly got angry. “Whose fault is that? I shouldn’t have defended you in front of the doctor earlier.”

“That’s my fault. I’m sorry.”

“Huh?” Lisa’s eyes widened, and she wondered, ‘Are my ears playing tricks on me?’

“Wow, you actually apologized.”

Leonard’s face darkened. “I’m not mute. I also bought many expensive gifts for the Jones family as an apology.”

“I don’t care about the things you bought,” Lisa muttered. “Nothing is more important to me than a sincere apology.

“Lisa, you must be out of your mind,” Leonard mocked. “How much is an apology worth? How could it be better than actual gifts?”

Lisa was stunned.

‘He has a point, since an apology is the cheapest thing ever. And yet, I valued Leonard’s apology more than all the expensive gifts he gave me.
