Lisa did not want Leslie to worry, so she brushed it off and said, “It was just a minor conflict. They don’t like me, so I don’t want to stay there and face their unpleasantries. Besides, I’m about to start school. I need a quiet place to study.”
“Did they agree?”
“They were eager for me to move out, too. I had no choice. I always talk back, and I’m quite troublesome.” Lisa shrugged teasingly. “I just don’t know why they refuse to let me divorce Leonard.”
Leslie frowned and sat beside her. “The wealthier the family, the harder it is to get a divorce.”
Lisa sighed. “Enough about me. How are you and Chris doing? Have you asked him about his hidden identity?”
“Yes, I asked. Chris said we didn’t know each other for à long time until we got married. He didn’t mention it because the company’s shares are still under his parents’ names. It has nothing to do with him for now.
“He doesn’t want to use it to show off. Besides, he doesn’t like boasting. He already told me about his assets. Also, he wanted to tell me about his parents’ identities when our families met that day, but we argued before dinner.”
Lisa nodded. “Although I’m unfamiliar with Chris, he’s quite proud. I think that part is true.”
“Yes.” Leslie agreed. “Chris is a hardworking and ambitious man. He usually stays in the lab before school starts and only comes home when it gets late.”
“That’s a bit much.” Lisa sighed. “These wealthy families already have a much better life than us. They’re so competitive that it pushes ordinary people like us against a wall. It’s hard to survive these days.
“Leslie, you should get home now. I’ll study and work hard to excel and surpass them all.”
Leslie chuckled. “Not to discourage you, but you might never surpass them even if you work yourself to death.”
Lisa remained silent and felt dejected.
“All right, let’s forget about that. Last time, you asked me to eavesdrop on Chelsea’s calls with her mother.” Leslie frowned in
annoyance.
She continued, “I’m not sure how to manage that child. She was in a fight with another girl in her class when I went to pick
up from the art studio the other day. I checked the surveillance footage, and it was Chelsea’s fault.

“I told her to apologize to the girl and reason with her on the way home, but she wouldn’t listen and kept staring at me. When we got home, she secretly called her mother and told her I was bullying her.
“Chelseas said I was a malicious stepmother who sided with others. Her mother even called Chris to complain that night.”
“Did Chris scold you for that?” Lisa asked.
“Not really.” Leslie shook her head. “I explained the whole situation to him, and he didn’t blame me. I’m not sure how to discipline Chelsea. She thinks I’m just doting on her to please Chris.
“If I scold her for doing something wrong, she sees it as bullying. Also, you might be right about Chris’s ex-wife’s intentions.”
Lisa became attentive. “What did you hear?”
“The day after our families met, I overheard Chelsea talking to her mother on the phone. Chelsea said she followed her mother’s instructions. Chelsea also mentioned that her grandparents dislike our family now and that Chris promised not to give her any siblings.”
