Chapter 13

Cassius

In the water I pushed Tarin who was struggling in my grasp down. He tried to resist but I forced him down with all my strength, watching as his face turned blue as he took his last breath. I was sick of all this fighting, it was time to end it. With his legs still thrashing, I plunged Tarin down into the deep water below.

As the cold water trickled over my own skin, I felt the sea close around me, I hoped that I would never make it back to the surface, I simply let go. The sea swallowed us both, and I knew that this was the end.

Time stood still as I felt the cold water engulf me, the weight of my dragon form aided the ocean in its effort to drown me. The sea surrounded me, trying to take me with it. In the water, Tarin couldn’t match the strength of a dragon. I held him in my claws, keeping his head at a level with my own. I looked deep into his eyes, and my scales began to cool. Medea had convinced me to escape the suffocating clutches of my mother. I was doing this for Katia, for Medea, and for Danny. I had a new family now, and I was tired of fighting for the old one.

Tarin looked like any other teenage boy who knew he was about to die. Tarin’s body shook with fear and despair, I’m sure a vision of hell was currently burning itself into his brain. His skin was pallid as death slowly crept over him. His once glowing eyes were now dull as the blade in his heart did its job.

Tarin was motionless in my grasp as I watched the life drain from his body. His eyes were still open, his body cold and lifeless in my talons. The sea’s grasp grew stronger and soon it began to pull us both into an underwater grave. We both sank beneath the depths of the sea.

My lungs burned with pain as pressure built up inside them. I knew that it must be getting close to the end for me too now. The darkness below engulfed us both, leaving me in a deep void. At first I felt as though I had entered limbo, but then, I felt relief as my dream finally came true. As death approached with each passing moment, my thoughts turned back towards Medea and Danny – those who had been so kind to me despite all that had happened between us as I descended into oblivion.

And then suddenly, warmth flooded through my veins. It was no doubt Medea trying to reach me with her psychic powers. Suddenly the memory of my conversation with her earlier in the evening flashed into my mind.

“Might be for the best, killing myself I mean.” I said, taking a deep breath of the cool air.

“Could be. Or you could give living a go,” she’d suggested.

“I’ve been living for 16 years, not my favourite activity,” I had said.

“Have you though? I mean you may have been alive, but were you really living?” Medea had asked.

“Perhaps not, I should give it a go,” I accepted.

Maybe I was being a fool, by faltering on my decision to end it all, but I knew that I was doing it for a reason.

Closing my eyes I felt the heat pouring through my veins again, it felt strange and yet it felt right. I heard a crackling noise and I opened my eyes. My eyes were blinded by the intense heat and light surrounding me, but as my vision came back, I saw a yellow light growing ever larger in front of my eyes. I could see Medea and Danny’s faces glowing against the light, as well as the beautiful smile Katia had carved onto the surface of the sun.

The light grew closer and closer until it finally enveloped me. The heat dissipated instantly and a great deal of strength and warmth surrounded me. I was soothed by a feeling of well-being unlike anything I’d ever felt. I felt like I was home.

“I love you guys,” I whispered before I fell into a slumber, my body drained of power.
