Lasko still could not settle, he shifted from one side to the other, and his tail started to twitch, so he thumped it on the floor. He hated his tail. He wondered how poor canines put up with them. They were sometimes particularly cumbersome and got in the way especially if you were coming through the door and some clumsy human idiot, not looking where they were going, trod on it, or shut the door! You had to be sure you got your tail in as soon as your body was through!

Now he started itching everywhere, his left side itched him like mad. He did not want to wake Todd up, so he slunk off the bed to scratch at the mad itch. Bringing his left forearm up to scratch was difficult causing him to slope to the right and almost toppled over! Otherwise, he did not mind being a canine, he felt comfortable enough.

Lasko padded down the hall to the stairs, he went to the kitchen and stood at the back door. The sky was so clear, in fact unnaturally so, especially for a chilly January night, he gazed up at the sky and the only star available tonight was Venus in all its glory, a very inhospitable planet.

He had the worst feeling in his life, there was something out there in the dark…Something bad, awfully bad and Lasko could sense the danger. He let out a mournful cry followed by a low growl, something was about to happen, and it was threatening to the human species; and for now, he just had to wait until he got further instructions.

Todd started fidgeting, he looked up and Lasko was not on the bed, he glanced at his bed in the corner, but he was not there either, so he got up and fumbled for his slippers then walked towards the staircase. He looked over the Bannister to see if there was a light on in the kitchen, not that he expected there to be a light, as smart as Lasko was he could not reach the wall switch. Maybe he had gone down for a drink of water? He made his way down the staircase and into the kitchen.

Lasko was staring out the back door, instantly he knew there was something wrong by the silver hackles standing up along his back.

“Lasko What’s wrong?” He hurried over and knelt beside the dog.

“I’m not exactly sure…But there is something about to happen, something awful Todd, but I don’t know what, I sense the menace in the air.”

“You don’t mean the guy we caught in the garden tonight?”

“No, No”

“What then, like a bad person? an accident? A storm that will do damage?”

The dog turned his head and looked at Todd, his eyes were bright blue. “No Todd, something much, much worse than that, and it will threaten the human species.”

He looked at Todd as his eyes faded from bright blue to mellow brown.

“What shall we do? Call the police?”

“And say what? Fuzzy head here has told me there is a major incident about to happen, and the whole human race will be blown out?”

Todd laughed. “Ok fuzzy head, enough about the prophet of doom already.”

“I’m not joking Todd, why would I scare you like that?”

Todd felt a chill seep into his bones his stomach turned.

He knew Lasko had powers and maybe he should not be too flippant about it.

“So, what can we do?”

“Nothing, absolutely nothing, we await further instructions.”

But Lasko had planted a little seed of worry in his mind, but he trusted him, and he knew that whatever this threat was, he could be sure Lasko would take care of it.

“Right fuzzy head,” Todd answered scratching behind Lasko’s ears. “Well, if we can’t do anything tonight why don’t we go back to bed, and I’ll give you some digestive biscuits and a bowl of warm milk, would you like chocolate? Or plain?” he teased.

“You already know the answer to that…Chocolate…The packet will do, and stop calling me ‘FUZZY HEAD’

After he ate his biscuits, they went back to bed. Lasko still could not settle so he just lay on the bed looking up at the skies.
