Chapter 1 Knock It Off

Late at night, after having sex, Edith Jones lay on the bed, gently panting with slightly pressed lips, watching Gideon Peterson get off her.

Having a pair of beautiful eyes, she turned to lie on her side. Gideon’s profile, charming and handsome, was all she could see. However, she didn’t mind his aloofness but still had a hint of expectation.

She thought, ‘Today is our wedding anniversary. Will he remember?’

“Giddy, you…” she said softly first, wanting to say something more.

But then, Gideon’s phone suddenly rang. He didn’t pay attention to Edith. He just reached for his phone, put it to his ear, and answered, “Hello.”

His voice was deep and husky, with the sexiness of just having made love.

The person on the other end said something. Gideon’s expression remained unchanged. He responded indifferently, “I’ll be right there.”

However, these words shattered all of Edith’s hopes. She watched, pale-faced, as Gideon walked to the wardrobe.

Gideon put on his neat suit with an indifferent expression as if he was just going to work.

Just as he was about to leave, Edith suddenly spoke up, looking down in an attempt to keep her voice calm. “Giddy, can you not go tonight?”

Gideon didn’t stop. He raised his hand, touching the doorknob with his attractive fingers.

His low-key watch reflected the bright light into Edith’s eyes.

She bit her lip and raised her voice. “Giddy!”

She shouted in a quivering voice choked with tears.

Hearing her voice, Gideon stopped and looked down at her with a cold, deep gaze. After a moment, he said coldly, “Knock it off.”

His voice was entirely different from the low and gentle panting during their intimate moments.

At that moment, his eyes were as indifferent as if he was looking at an object.

Edith didn’t speak again. She tightly grasped the blanket over her, her fingers clenched, tasting blood in her mouth.

She felt like her heart was hollowed out, with cold winds howling through.

When Gideon left, Edith heard the door slam shut. She lay on the bed like a broken doll, staring blankly at the ceiling.

Soon, she seemed to come to her senses, wrapped herself in the blanket, and rushed out the door.

Gideon had already reached the first floor and was opening the front door. Sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ Find_Nøvel.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Edith hurried down the stairs from the second floor. Just as she was about to descend the last stair, she missed a step and fell to the ground.

As her knees hit the ground hard, Edith heard the sound of Gideon closing the front door.

With unbearable pain in her knees, she knelt on the floor, head down. With hands loosely clenched, she propped herself up, her body trembling.

After a while, she looked up, her face pale, but her eyes were terrifyingly bloodshot.

She knew why Gideon had left.

She knew everything.

She knew that their marriage was a forced choice for him. He had never loved her and had a mistress. She also knew that the phone call just now was from that woman.

On their wedding anniversary, a single call from that woman was enough to make Gideon leave Edith.

She laughed at herself for hoping Gideon would remember their special day.

She naively thought she could make him stay.

Edith laughed pathetically, tears streaming down uncontrollably while laughing.

She realized she had completely lost.

The next day, Edith didn’t see Gideon again.

In the evening, Gideon returned.

He reached out his hand and pushed open the door. The house had no lights on, the setting sun casting a warm and soft orange glow inside.

Usually, Edith would have already prepared dinner, quietly sitting on the sofa waiting for him.

But today, there was no one on the sofa.

Gideon turned on the lights in the room and saw that the dining table was filled with a variety of dishes.

Approaching the table, he gently touched a plate and realized that all those dishes had long gone cold.

Gideon subconsciously furrowed his brows.

Then, he glanced down and noticed the divorce agreement on the side, clearly already signed by Edith.

Gideon’s face darkened, anger evident in his eyes. He grabbed the paper, almost crumpling it in his hand.

He thought, ‘Edith just left like that?!

‘What does she take me for?’

Gideon’s chest heaved, and it took him a while to calm down. With a cold expression, he made a phone call, his voice deep and intimidating, which could make anyone tremble in fear.

“Find Edith by any means necessary!”
