Chapter 40 

Selene got the cup from her friend’s hand as she frowned. She couldn’t believe Irisi would ever suspect her. They were basically sisters, even if they weren’t blood related. They were still sisters. They had done everything sisters could have done and maybe 

even more. 

Did the bond they shared before no longer exist? Had Iris not seen her in her memories? Selene felt so betrayed as she got the cup in her hand. She wanted to tell her friend her mind, but nope, that would be after she took the drink to prove a point. 

Selene also did what Vance did as she raised the cup to her mouth. Her l*ps pressed hard on the cup’s lid and then she raised the cup a little further to let the tea cup come up again. She straightened her n*eck and waited for the liquid to come to her mouth and run down her throat.

It hit Selene without a warning as she felt the bitterness instantly. Whatever the healer had made it deserved to be called poison as it was too bitter. The smell was nauseating too. She tried to hold her breath while the cup was on her l*ps but she couldn’t. Selene managed to put a reasonable amount of the herb into her mouth before she took the cup out of her mouth and quickly rushed to the table. She dropped the cup on the table and turned to leave when Iris stopped her halfway at the door. 

“Where do you think you’re going to?” Her friend asked her. Selene had the tea in her mouth and so, she couldn’t speak. She tried to use her hands to tell her friend that she needed to hear out but Iris refused. 

“But if you leave, how would I know if the drug actually worked?p I think you need to stay here. Stay here with me and my mate. We’d need to see how the drug works on you, so 

that I can also take it” Iris said to her as she slowly plucked her hands off the door knob and led her back to the room. Selene could feel a burning Rafe inside her but she could say nothing at that moment. She only looked at her friend with anger in her eyes as she led her back to her seat. 

Selene took her seat beside Vance as she adjusted herself. She turned to look at Vance who shrugged as she raised a brow. Nadia called out her name as she asked her friend why she still held the tea mixture in her mouth. 

“Won’t

like to swallow it? It seems it’s been there for too long. Drink it down” she said to her friend. Selene wanted not to answer her friend but she couldn’t. Her cheeks started to hurt as she held the mixture in her cheeks more and more. Her face was now turning purple as she tried not to drink it down. 

“Swallowed. There!!!. Are you happy now?” Selene said forced herself to drink the tea

mixture. She squeezed her face as she tried not to look disgusted but she couldn’t as her next reaction was filled with disgust. Selene stuck her tongue out as she took her hand to her mouth to fan her tongue. The mixture was not so great. She turned to look at her friend, Iris, who gave her a reassuring smile. 

“Now, we wait, Iris said with another smile. “While we are waiting, is there anything else you would like to tell me? Anything in particular that you think I should know?” Iris said with another smile as she looked from her mate to Selele and then back to her mate. Everyone looked annoyed or disgusted but she didn’t mind. Whatever they felt was their business. She did not care anymore. Caring the last time had killed her, she reminded herself. 

“Who made you this way?” Selene spoke out first. She had a look of disappointment on her face as she spoke to her friend. 

“What do you mean? What way am I now? And how was I then? That was a trick question Nadia decided to add. It was going to make things easier, she hoped. 

If she had gotten her mate or Selene to answer the question, it would give her a clue on how to behave from that moment. 

She closed her eyes for a few seconds as she prayed to the moon goddess that they would answer. 

“You used to be a sweet soul. Yes, you obviously had flaws, big flaws, but they never got to this level. What changed you?” Selene asked her friend. Nadia sat up straight. It looked like the moon goddess was answering her prayer in a subtle way. She smiled, “What were my flaws?” Nadia asked Selene with a smile. “What were they that you called them big?” She added another question as she slowly crossed her legs on the table she sat on. Her breath was steady as she flashed a smile to her friend again. 

“You were kind, sweet and affectionate. It was because of those qualities that I asked you to be my sister since I had no biological sister, do you not remember that too? Selene said as she tried to explain things. She made use of her hands as if to explain a point. It looked like she wasn’t getting her message and so she stood up to explain more. Maybe the hand movements were doing much for her and so she decided to use her whole b*dy. 

“This isn’t you, I want the old you back. Whatever happened to you, I want to know. Tell me. Now!!” Nadia watched as her friend tried to command her.She was about to react 

when she heard her mate’s voice. 

“Iris, that’s enough.. apologize to your best friend right now. You’re annoying her. Apologize now, what you’re doi… his voice stopped mid–way as she watched him start. coughing. She ran over to him and knelt by his side. Selene did the same too as they tried to calm him down. 

Chapter 41 

Selene rushed to her friend’s mate as she knelt beside him. She slowly lifted her hands to his chest as she asked him to cough gently. She picked the cup of water from the table and pointed it to him. 

“Here, have a drink. Do you need it?” She asked, her voice was filled with concern. 

Vance collected the cup in his hand as she tried to put the cup into his mouth but Nadia slapped it off him before it went halfway. Everyone turned to look at her. 

“What was that for? Selene jumped to her feet as she asked. She rushed as she grabbed the cup and walked to the kitchen to get another cup of water. Nadia let her pass as she stood still. She held her breath too. 

When she finally got out, Nadia rushed to her husband’s side as she told him she wasn’t going to let him take the cup of water Selene was bringing. 

“Why?” He turned his face sharply to look at her. Whilst he held his chest, still coughing out blood, he asked again. “Why would you not let me drink from the cup? Is there something wrong?” 

Nadia wondered if he was naturally that dumb or he too was too trusting of the people around him, just like she was when she was Nadia. Or maybe it was a plot they had both planned to have her killed but she was too smart for them and so they played dumb to stop her from suspecting. She looked at her mate’s face again. A closer look maybe, would help her find out the truth. 

Nadia saw blood dripping more and more from Vance’s mouth as she saw Selene return. with the cup of water. Selene again rushed to his side and handed him the water. She gave him a leaf to chew on and then asked him to drink more water. 

“That drink was meant for me. You brought it for me” Nadia said slowly as she gently rose on her feet. 

“Yes, it was. The healer sent me to give you that” Selene said absent–mindedly. She was helping Vance clean up the blood that leaked from his mouth and paid no attention to 

Nadia. 

Nadia had finally gotten up fully and she stood still staring at Selene. 

“That drink was meant for me,” she said again. Selene said yes and then turned to look at her friend’s face. “Is there a problem, Iris?” 

Vance 

“That drink was for me but I made him drink it and he choked and even brought blood. out of his insides. Why?” Nadia asked Iris‘ friend. Selene turned back to help clean up. She said nothing and made no noise at all. It was very suspicious of Selene. 

Chapter 41 

Nadia repeated herself for the third time until she finally got a reaction from Selene. Selene, again turned to her friend as she asked. “Are you suspecting anything?… You’re free to speak whatever is on your mind, you know” she said with a raised eyebrow. Nadia covered her mouth instantly as she tried not to overreact or curse her friend. She could not believe what her eyes had just witnessed. Was Selene claiming right? 

“You almost had me killed with that poisonous thing in the cup you brought. I refused to take it. I gave it first to my mate, here.. Nadia pointed to Vance who had now gotten the cloth from Selene and was cleaning up by himself. Selene returned her gaze back to her friend. Nadia. 

“If I hadn’t given it to him, I probably would have been dead by now.. You tried to kill me! She paused, wide eyes as she turned to her mate, Vance. She lifted her hands ast she pointed to Selene. “You just witnessed this right now, didn’t you?… She tried to kill me, with that poisonous drink. Didn’t you just see that?” She said as she immediately returned her hands to her side. She opened them wide and then tried to gesture with her hands. 

Vance cleared his throat and was about to speak when Selene interrupted her. 

“I don’t think Iris here is done talking. Alpha, please let her finish. I beg you” Selene 

turned back to her friend with a raised brow. C. talking. I want to hear 

everything you have to say” she also lifted her fingers as if to say the same thing. 

Nadia nodded as she stood with her hands on her waist. She brought one hand in which she used to explain herself. 

“I had doubts about Selene but this time. I am sure of it. She must have wanted me dead, I am very sure of it. She gave me a poisoned drink and now, she seems very confident. She doesn’t seem very concerned about the offense she had just committed. Infact, I don’t even think she is remorseful. We should have her imprisoned or killed” Nadia said without a thought. When she had finished talking, she brought her hands back in and then up and then folded them. It must have felt good to have taken that off her chest. 

Selene stood there shocked to her bones as she heard what her friend had just said. She turned to the alpha, Vance who also had a shocked look on his face. She took her face off and focused back on her friend, Iris. 

“Is that what you think about me?… After all these years, Nadia. You think I would want to Poison you?” She said as she took one step closer to her friend. She bent over and slowly picked up the cup on the table. She returned back to her normal posture as she stood straight there for a few seconds. Tears were building in her eyes as she stared Nadia straight in the eye. Finally, a few drops as she had the courage to speak. 

“You’re definitely not my friend, Iris. I don’t know who you are, but I never want to see
