Chapter 70

When I got back, Dad was already cooking in the kitchen with Mom.

F2

The two of them had always had a loving relationship. In all their long years together, Dad always helped Mom out in the kitchen whenever he had time. Even if he weren’t able to help, he would stand there and talk to Mom.

In the past, I had always thought that love was grand and exciting, but after experiencing life and death, I realized that being there for each other every day, like my parents, was true love. Being there for someone through thick and thin was the greatest confession of love that one could make.

“Happy Thanksgiving, Mom and Dad! I bought each of you a gift.”

I bounced into the kitchen with my gifts and handed them over.

Oh, Swee

Sweetie. What did you get us? Why are you being so lovely today?”

Mom excitedly wiped her hands on her apron and accepted the jewelry box I gave her.

“Mom, you like emeralds, don’t you? The jewelry store that you like just launched a new collection, so I bought you one of the necklaces. Dad enjoys smoking cigars, and the shop assistant told me that the flavor of this is excellent. It’s a newly imported product, Dad! Try it!” I said excitedly.

I opened the jewelry box and extracted the sparkling emerald necklace, then fastened it around Mom’s neck.

“You have excellent taste, Tay. Your mother looks even more elegant with this necklace on,” Dad said approvingly.  sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ FɪndNøvel.ɴᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Dad, go sit on the sofa and try the cigar I bought. If you like it, I’ll buy you more when I earn more money in the future.”

I pushed Dad out into the living room, took a cigar out from the box, and lit it for him.

It was rare for me to be so thoughtful, and Dad’s eyes crinkled into a smile.

He took a drag of the cigar dangling from his mouth and said in satisfaction, “It does have a good flavor. The most important thing is that it’s a thoughtful gesture from my precious daughter!”

“Stay here and smoke it then. I’ll go and help Mom in the kitchen.”

I suddenly felt as if I was back to being that obedient, thoughtful child who had desperately sought her parents‘ approval.

When I saw the sincere smiles on my parents‘ faces, I felt comforted.

Mom made a huge, delicious spread with my help.

The three of us sat around the dinner table, and Dad specially opened a bottle of Chateau Lafite Rothschild from 1982.

He smiled and said, “It’s been five years since Tay has spent Thanksgiving with us. Let’s have a drink today since it’s such a happy occasion.”

Had it really been five years?

I couldn’t help but feel a lump in my throat when I heard him, and I began to reflect on my memories.

Dad was right. For the first three years I had been at university, and I had spent the entire time buzzing around Gordon like a bee. I hadn’t wanted to return home at all. In the last two years, I had gotten married in a rush in Welvale. In the two Thanksgiving days after my marriage, I had been waiting foolishly at home for Gordon, but he had always abandoned me and gone to his parents‘ house.

“It would be even better if Gordon could have returned with you, Sweetie. That would have made our Thanksgiving perfect.”

Mom took a sip of red wine and sighed.

The smile on my father’s face dropped when he heard Gordon’s name.

“It would be better not to mention him. I don’t think we even exist to him. Tay has been married to him for two years, but he’s only visited here once after the wedding. It pains me to think of it. Tay is our only daughter, and she married into the Holmes family only to be neglected!”

Perhaps it was because it was Thanksgiving, but Dad was unusually chatty today.

My heart twisted at his words.

I had no idea what I was thinking at the time. Why had I insisted on marrying Gordon?

As a result, he looked down on my parents, too. In the past, I had never considered the feelings of my

parents.

The truth was that when I wasn’t happy, my parents were the ones that were most upset.

“Let’s not talk about that. Since today is a happy day, let’s talk about happy things. How’s work at Radglo Corporation, Sweetie? I heard your father say that you’ve been working hard and that you’ve got energy and drive. That’s good. Keep it up!” Mom said smilingly.

She was afraid that Dad would be upset, so she changed the subject quickly.

I gathered my thoughts and was about to speak to them when the doorbell abruptly rang.

It was already so late, and it was Thanksgiving. Who could be at our door?
