The Sun God Diaries
Chapter One: No Easy Picnic

“Hey, little bro!” I heard the booming voice of Kaden as I finished getting dressed for school. “It’s almost time to go, so make sure to shake a leg.”

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” I hollered as I finished getting my favorite black boots on.

So like I said, my name is Malachi Jean-Luc DuBauer (the one omega kid brother in a sea of Alphas and Betas in the DuBauer clan). And as I finish getting dressed for school on a Friday, I already know two things were certain: my brothers were going to leave me with the scraps from Yesenia’s signature breakfasts and that I was due for more courting from unmated Alpha jocks.

Finally satisfied with my outfit (a sky-blue sweater from Michael Kors and Levi’s jeans in black to match my Der Dau Boots), I grabbed my backpack and let my minimal-themed bedroom and made my way through the maze-like halls of the Palace of the Wolves, the royal family home of the Werewolf Kings Iain and Archer and my current home until I found my mate. And as soon as I finally arrived in the spacious dining hall where my family was chowing down, I already frowned at the lack of the breakfast spreads save for some fruit and a glass of juice. “Really?” I said, frowning at my happily-eating fathers (the Elite Eight Alphas from LA and Anis) and my brothers. “Y’all know that I need to eat, too.”

“Yeah,” burped Kaden Vicente as he and his twin Clayton Dominique (werewolf/dragon hybrids) were draining the last of their milk before he continued. “But you’re a smaller guy and an Omega, so you need to eat less.”

“True,” agreed Phillipe and Claude (the emotionally-volatile Alpha twins) in unison.

“And besides, it’s not like you can afford to pack on some fat,” grinned Abaddon while he and his brother Azrael (the sadistically evil twin Alphas- hellhound/vampire/demon hybrids). “You look so swan-like and graceful that you could be one jellybean away from being Porky Pig.”

That comment earned him a round of slaps on the back of the head from my saintly twin brothers Gabe and Mike (angel/mermen sweethearts) as Gabe handed me a plate of buckwheat pancakes with fresh fruit and hash browns. “Pay them no mind,” he commented as Mike handed me a glass of orange juice.

“Thank you,” I said, waving hello at the silent demigod/werewolf/dragon hybrid twins Taylor and Terrell before eating.

“All right, all right,” my dad Carson said, cutting down on the chatter as all eyes were focused on him as he still kept his teenage-esque looks. “Boys, you already know that the next two days are set for your birthday weekend and you’ll also be searching for your mates.”

“Not only that,” commented werewolf dad Gavin, “you’ll be getting random visits from your Great-Grandmother about your abilities and be shifting as well.”

“Sweet,” commented Azrael, munching on a bagel as Vincenzo Paulo Yanez (one of my best friends) sat at my right as his dad Armando sat at my left. “I know that Abaddon and I will be ready to get down to the mating part and be-”

“Don’t,” I heard Terrell say sternly. “Most of us want to keep our food in our stomachs.”

“But he’s right,” piped up Claude, pausing to take a deep breath to keep his angel and demon halves quiet in his head. “And anyway, we need our mates to feel connected and our supernatural halves at ease. Lord knows that I need to find mine so I can keep Enrio and Ovari from fighting it out.”

“Same with wolf, vampire, and werecat as I need to keep out of detention if I want to play for the Homecoming game next week,” Phillippe replied. “We need to find our mates as soon as possible when our birthday weekend arrives.”

The other brothers nodded in agreement, already knowing that to reject a mate would spell ultimate tragedy because it would kill off the rejected and get the rejector in a whole heap of trouble- hint-hint, readers.

Dad nodded. “Then you should already know that you boys will remain chaste until the celebrations,” he commented. To me, “Malachi, you’ll need lots of protection from the unmated Alphas and Betas since you’re the one omega in the family.”

“Dad,” I said, “I’m not even sure if I’ll even find my mate right away.”

“Hey,” Clayton exclaimed. “The guys have been asking for you and they have a strong feeling that you’re bound to mate with them.”

“There’s an idea,” commented my merman father Alain, giving me the same pointed glance. “And as much as you don’t want to hang out with the Magnificent eight, boy, you’ll need to spend lots of time with them in the days to come.”

“Guys, I-”

“It’s not up for debate,” Abaddon boomed, giving me a leering grin. “Az just texted the guys and told them that you’d be down to hang out with them after school. So forget about hanging out with Suarez and her clan, but Vincenzo will be around to keep you safe.”

Oh, goody-gumdrop. I knew that this was bound to happen, folks. We’ll get to the Magnificent Eight Alphas in a bit, but I can only say to y’all is that they have been clinging to me like glue since sixth grade when my brothers had me meet them. And I was always dragged along to watch them train, go on their runs, and even hang out. IF it weren’t for the fact that Pauly was around alongside Floriana, I would go bonkers.

Dad noticed my look of discomfort. “I’ll make sure that Ciara tells Floriana to join you and Pauly,” he whispered to me. “She knows that you’ll need someone to gossip with.”

“Thanks,” I breathed.

After a few minutes of chit-chat, it was already time to head out. And I was feeling the need to drive today in one of the many luxury cars. But no sooner than I was heading out of the dining room, Terrell and Taylor stopped in front of me with crossed arms. “We’re escorting you to school,” the former said, his tone brooking no argument. “And we’re walking,” replied his twin.

I scoffed. “But it’s only September,” I protested.

“Don’t care,” replied Terrell. “It’s a great day out and you’ll need to get in some fresh air.” He snapped his fingers as a passing waitress handed me my favorite jacket and a packed lunch (“All healthy foods,” I heard Gabe comment before he and Mike took to their waiting Range Rover.).

“I hate y’all,” I muttered.

“No you don’t,” grinned Taylor as he and Terrell led me outside as we began the one-mile walk to Bethune Memorial High, go Wolverines. “You’ll thank us later, little dude.”

And I knew it was true. Being an Omega in a sea of Alphas and Betas is no easy picnic, but I can’t really complain.
