Thirsty for him
12. The night after

I look at my father who is now sitting upright in bed and let go of his shoulders, looking at him as he now looks at me awake, “Dad, they’re coming. We can’t go to sleep!” Dad wanted to jump out of bed, but it was a stronger force that made him fall asleep again. Every time I try to shake him awake, he falls back asleep. Why is this so hard. Am I the only one who doesn’t feel like sleeping?

When I go back upstairs to Diana’s room, she has fallen back asleep and won’t wake up when I start shaking her. I have done my best now will have to fight this on my own though.

First, I checked the whole house and locked all the locks in the house. I even closed the shutters on the downstairs floor because I wanted to make it as dark as possible,

Make it as dark as possible could. Now I hope they can’t get in and leave after trying. How naive am I? Like they will leave and suddenly forget what we did and who we are. When I hear the clock on the wall above the stove, I know it’s midnight, and I sense that Varnic is not far away.

Is he doing this on purpose? Is this how he lets me know they’re coming, or is he here for revenge too? I run upstairs and look through the window in the hall to the front door, where I see two people standing. Then I hear knocking and see one person standing in front of the door, causing the one next to him to slap the back of the other’s head. “They are sleeping, fool,” I hear the voice with my sensitive hearing say to the other. Should I say something to them, or do I play this game with them? They don’t know that I don’t sleep. Ok, maybe Varnic knew, but I haven’t heard Varnic say anything to them about it. They are trying to break down the door to get in.

Our door is so strong that they can’t get through and walk away from the front door irritated. Then I hear a noise at the back door, where they are now also trying to get in. I now walk through to my sister’s room which is still deep in sleep and run to the window to see what they are up to now.

The back door is wooden and is not as strong as our front door, and I have a kind of feeling that they will come in sooner than I want. I wrap my hands around my head and think of what else I can try to keep them away from our house. There has to be a way to fool them or attack them where they don’t expect it, and then it happens. The door breaks open and they come inside. Only one idea comes to mind now, well, a very reckless one to carry out even to do so.

I run up the stairs at a fast pace and open all the doors on the third floor. Hoping they are not asleep and want to help me protect our home. What a look when I notice them very awake and hungry as hell. When I hear noise coming from the stairs below, I beat out a cry of words I have never said in my life, “Dransidoris!” Each agonized look at me and followed me down the stairs to the intruders of our home.

As we stand on the bottom step of the stairs, they see us standing, “That can’t be, they are supposed to be sleeping! How did they do this?” Before he can say another word, we attack. I laughed angrily as they were all slaughtered by the tormented. Blood was everywhere, as were limbs. The group of Tormented stood there, enjoying a corps in the hallway, with them all surrounding the body.

Until I hear a man ask in amazement, “Lucy?” I know this man who is looking. Just as, Lucy is looking back at him with an empty stare. She doesn't even recognize him like he does, she is only hungry. “What happened to you? I thought you were dead,” the man asks Lucy. Who I did recognize as Varnic’s father.

I felt brave and stood between them, knowing Lucy would obey me and not eat me before she could attack him, “she’s gone and if you’re not out of our house in a second, you’re gone forever too!” I laughed so darkly that I saw Varnic looking up at me in disbelief and fear. They did what I told them to do and left. The only thing I heard him tell the others was; “This battle they one, come.”

His men are clearly not happy with him and this foolish attack he has planned. When they are gone I look at what all the tormented have finished and all that is left is a pool of blood with some bones. I look at it in horror and step around it as I order them to go back to their rooms. They had eaten enough and listened to me without resisting.

Later, when I also look in the kitchen, I find two more of the bounded men lying dead on the kitchen floor. What only is left of them, I mean. Then I step after the Tormented ones upstairs and close back all the doors I had opened earlier on.

I let myself slide along the wall and fall asleep from total exhaustion against the wall. Exhausted by this fight and all the strength it took for me to be able to control the others and not fall asleep in the meantime.

When I wake up, it’s already morning and I stare straight into my sister’s eyes, “What happened? There’s blood everywhere?” I suddenly remember everything that happened last night, it felt more than a vision or some kind of dream, something that didn’t happen.

“We killed a few,” I say with a sarcastic smile on my face. “What did you kill and with whom?” Asks my father as he comes up behind Diana and looks at me in surprise with even some pride coming through in his eyes.

“We killed a few bound vampires and ate a few,” I say with a grin on my face, still speaking in the same sarcastic tone. It’s not as if I should be ashamed that they attacked us. They both looked at me like I’d gone crazy, “I had some help from The Tormented.” Father can hardly believe his ears and Diana looks at father questioningly, not understanding what I am talking about, or pretending not to know. sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“The tormented have helped you?” Says he now, clearly in a tone of disbelief, as if I made all this up. “See for yourself, but Father, they might be a little dirty from all the food, but I’ll fix that later.” If I can get them to fight with me, I can get them to shower too. Diana gives me her hand and I get up and step downstairs to look at all the mess we made last night. Which indeed looks horrible, like there was a massacre in our house.

My stomach was first asking for food now aches at the smell of all those limbs, flesh, and blood. “Clean up?” I ask behind me, where my father and sister with their mouths open are taking in the damage well now.

None of us are eager to clean up this mess. After all, we can’t call a company to do it for us without getting a police investigation on our necks. This place looks like the home of a serial killer and not a family in this small village, where almost nothing ever happens. “Avery, thanks for saving us. Father is too proud to say it, but I will.” Says my sister as she hugs me, both covered in blood.

What a night, I think, as I do some more cleaning. When we finally finished, we walked upstairs and freshened up, so I could go back to school that very morning. Yes, we pretended nothing happened and went back to doing our daily things. Or rather, I went back to doing my daily things.

Diana is still not ready to go back to school. Everyone at her school knew about her relationship with Hollister, and everyone knew that he left. Not gone like death, but just gone. She is so afraid of being asked too many questions about him. That’s why she prefers to stay home, because that happens more often here in our little village, that people start gossiping about each other.

Before I leave the house to go to school, I stop by Diana’s room. Where I walk in and see her standing next to the bed with her phone in her hand looking at a picture of her and Hollister. I take her in my arms and hug her, feeling the tears fall from her eyes onto my shoulders. “I know how you feel, and I know I will suffer the same fate as you.” She nods, “the fate of the marked ones,” she whispers.
