Transparent Color's
Chapter 18

The home has some nice qualities. After our good-byes, and the Majestic and Toby becoming new found brothers, I take Toby’s hand and we walk up the steps to the door. When I first enter the home there’s stairs to my left and to my right a long hall going straight back to the kitchen. I go down the hall to the kitchen first, I hear Toby running up the stairs.

As I am walking down the hall on the wall there are five blank picture frames on each side. I stop in front of one frame, and gently touch it. In doing this a screen in the frame lights up and a voice comes into hearing.

“What’s your favorite scenery?”

I softly reply, “stars.” As soon as I say those words a picture of a sky full of stars appears. A big smile crosses my face and I go to the next four frames, each with a different question.

“What’s your favorite part of the day?

Nighttime.”

“What’s your favorite color?

Yellow.”

“What’s your favorite word?

Hope.”

“What’s your favorite memory?

My parents.”

Tears enter my eyes when a drawing of a picture of me and my parents appear. How does it know? I wonder. I hear Toby’s footsteps coming down the stairs, so I wipe the tears from my eyes.

“Maggie you should see the rooms, they’re huge!” he says with an excited face and arm gestures, “and we each get our own bathroom!”

“That’s nice. Look what I’ve found.” I show him the frames; he jumps up and down and does his five on the other wall.

“What’s your favorite scenery?

A hill full of grass.”

“What’s your favorite part of the day?

Afternoon.”

“What’s your favorite color?

A rainbow.”

“What’s your favorite word?

Cool.”

“What’s your favorite memory?

Scraping my knee.”

I look at him confused about the last frame. He looks up at me and says, “The first memory I can remember is me falling on the ground scraping my knee, and you come over and pick me up. I think that’s the day I knew I could trust you the most.” He gives me a smile.

I smile back; give him a hug and a kiss on the head. Then tell him, “And you can always trust me.”

Toby smiles and tears start to form, but he quickly starts rubbing his eyes. He puts his arms down and says, “Well enough of this mushy stuff, come see the rooms!” Toby grabs my arm and pulls me down the hall and up the stairs.

I go into Toby’s room first. The room seems like it is the size of the whole house. He has a king size bed, huge dresser, closet and bathroom. Everything is in different shades of colors. Like a rainbow.

“Wow it was all white before. I guess after saying my favorite color it changed.” He laughs a little, goes to his closet and opens the door and then says, “Look Maggie, all the clothes I picked out at the Supply Shop yesterday.”

Was that just yesterday? It feels like weeks ago, I think to myself. “That’s awesome Toby, I’m going to go look at mine now.” He says okay, I pat his head and leave the room.

When I enter my new room all I can see is different shades of yellow. I think of Anna and how if she was here she would be in heaven with a pink room. I start to laugh a little at the thought. I look around and I also have a king sized bed, a huge closet, dresser, and bathroom. One thing Toby did not have is standing next to the dresser, a full size mirror, just like my mother’s. I approach the mirror and look at my reflection, and notice not much has changed. My eyes then catch the reflection of a small red box with a red ribbon around it.

I turn around and see it in the middle of the bed. I go over to the bed and climb on top, and then I pick up the box and untie the ribbon. I take off the cover and there inside the box is my mother’s pink pin. I gasp and quickly take it out, causing the box to fall onto the bed. I hold the pin in my hands examining every inch of it to make sure it was the same as before. It looks the same, but a bit shinier.

I put down the pin for a second. I take the purple clip out of my hair and tie my hair up in a messy bun. Then pick up the pin and place it in my hair. My smile is full. I look down and notice something sticking out of the box, I pull it out and it’s a tiny note. I unfold it and there are only two words:

“Remember this.”

I wonder what he means by this. I feel he could be meaning this in two ways; to be humorous because I forgot it in my dress or to show his graciousness and how one day I might have to repay him for that.

I put the note back in the box and cover it. I then toss it off the bed and lay down. As I look at my golden-yellowish ceiling I start to wonder about Maliki and where he is staying, and if I will ever see him again. My chest starts to hurt, so I think of someone else. I now try to figure out the Majestic and his blue eyes. The blue I saw as we dance and the blue I saw, for a brief second, in the car ride. They seemed to have changed to different shades, which causes a different feeling in me. How can that be? At times he seems like a kind man, especially around Toby. But then there are times were he seems cold and hateful. Is it all an act to persuade us in some way or are my eyes just tricking me again.

“Maggie I’m hungry, should we make dinner?” Toby leans against the door frame and puts his hand on his stomach, like he’s in desperate pain. He’s so dramatic. But it is late and I’m hungry as well, so I get up and we head to the kitchen.

The kitchen is quite big. On the wall to my left is a large flat steel machine that must be a refrigerator. Steel counters surround the walls. To my right in the middle of the floor is a steel table with chairs. I walk over to the table and pull out the chair. I sit down and like I expected, it’s uncomfortable. The whole room is full of steel and silver.

“Hey Maggie look!” Toby says.

I turn in the chair and Toby is by the refrigerator holding an ice cream cone. I quickly jump off the chair and move to the refrigerator.

“How did you do that?” I ask with shock.

“I’m not sure. I was just standing in front of it and a screen turned on and it had food choices. I selected the ice cream cone and it appeared in this little door, right here.”

I look at the slot where the little door slides open, and then the screen lights up. There are different categories of food, and I choose bread. Different types of bread are shown and I select a honey roll. As soon as I select it, the door slot glows blue for a second then the door slides open and the honey roll appears, nice and warm.

I take it out and just mutter, “Amazing.” I’m going to add this to my list. I take a bite and it tastes absolutely delicious. We slide through the categories and pick out our dinners.

I sit down across from Toby, facing the wall connected to the entrance. I eat my food, and when I’m done I look up at Toby and notice a split in the wall behind him. It looks like one of those walls at the supply shop that open up. I move out of my chair and stand in front of the wall. A blue circle appears, like it did in the shop, so I place my hand on it and the wall opens.

The room is a narrow rectangular shape. Inside is a gray and silver couch on the wall to my left, facing a huge screen on the opposite wall. On the very back wall there is a desk on one half and a large book shelf on the other half. In front of the book shelf is a silver cushioned chair with a lamp.

I give a smile and head to the book shelf. But when I pass the huge screen a blue light flashes on, and then a voice. This stops me in my tracks and I end up sitting on the couch instead of the cushioned chair.

“Ooh, what’s this?” says Toby, he sits next to me.

This must be a television, but it’s a lot different from the one we had in the old City. This is a thin screen attached to the wall, what we had was nearly a twenty inch box on a crooked stand. I find this to be much more spectacular.

The voice says, “Good evening Magolin and Toby, before we go to your desired program, lets learn the history of this Grand City.”

A movie about the City and the Majestic himself proceed for about twenty-five minutes. I learn about the Great War, the fight where good triumphs evil, and how four surviving heroes were honored with the control of four Cities in the North, South, East, and West. The Majestic’s great, great, great grandfather was one of the soldier’s honored and he built up this City. The movie went on to the progression of the City and how it’s now flourishing more than ever. The last ten minutes of the movie is spent on how wonderful and gracious the Majestic is; which reminds me of him sending my pin, and the note.

“Remember this”

Is all I hear in my head now. I bring my head to my hands and shake the thought away. The movie is over and now the voice is asking what we would like to watch. I look at Toby and say I am feeling tired, he can watch one show then he has to go to bed as well. Tomorrow I have to find out about school for him. He nods his head, I give him a kiss on top of his head, and say goodnight.

When I get into my room, I undress and clean up. When finished I turn the light off and lay in my new bed. I look up at the ceiling and what I see is thousands and thousands of glowing stars. I start to think about the tall grass that reminded me of giants, and all the nights I had under the stars. Real stars. Not fake ones like these. I now drift to sleep thinking about the color green and dancing.
