Chapter 13

I have been at Chloe's place for two days now. I'm already used to her and the community. They are all nice and treat me with respect. Well, that's mostly because Chloe's mom is their leader.

Since I've rested enough, I plan on leaving this place and going to search for Kara. But Chloe kept insisting that I stay a bit longer. I didn't want her to know what was really going on so I decided to stay back. By the way, I don't have a clue about Kara's whereabouts and I am scared of going back to the woods. I am scared I might bump into a vampire again.

"Hey, bestie!" I heard Chloe's voice say. I think she's going a bit overboard with this whole friendship stuff.

It's nice and stuff, but calling me bestie? It's weird because I've known her for less than three days!

"Chloe, I think it's time I leave. Thank you for your hospitality and care, but I can't keep staying here. My sister must be worried about me." I said feeling a bit sad. I seriously don't want to leave, but I have to. I can't keep hiding. Those Vampires would find me sooner or later, and I don't want Chloe and her people getting into my Vampire mess. Their community seems peaceful, and I doubt they know anything about Vampires.

She walked toward me and sat beside me, holding my hands, she said; "Hey, I know I can't stop you. you have a family and a life out there. I'm sorry for being selfish. I don't want you to leave because you are the only person that's about my age. You are my first friend Kendra. I've lived among older people for years. I was the last person to be born in our land Kendra..." She paused and began to cry.

"What do you mean?" I asked. Yeah, what does she mean? I have met other children in the community. Though, none was her age.

"Well, it happened eighteen years ago. A great and strong Hunter went in search of food in the woods, as there was a famine and people were dying. He was soo desperate to help his people that he went to the forbidden part of the forest, he found plenty of food and provisions. He brought it back and helped the community.

But, he didn't know that this angered the beast that was in charge of that part of the forest. The beast angrily laid a curse on the villagers. Making them barren. At that time, my mom was already pregnant. She gave birth to me months after the incident. That, making me the last person to be born." She added firmly. That was the creepiest story I've heard! I don't know what to say or how to react...

"The curse was lifted five years ago. So, the only kids you can find are below five" she concluded.

I moved closer to her and hugged her.

But this wasn't going to change my mind. I was still going to leave. I can't stay here and be a burden on them. It's too much. Even if I don't find Kara, I'll need to move on. Maybe I could stay at Troy's place before I sought things out. I'm sure he's still mad at me for cheating with lan, but I'm sure he would not be able to leave me on the street.

Troy and I have been dating for two years, and even though I go out with other guys, he's actually the only guy I've ever loved sincerely, and I believe he feels the same about me.

"Chloe, I need to leave now. I want to be out of the woods by noon." I said barely audible.

"I understand." She said sadly.

I arranged my things. 'well, literally, I don't have anything' I just wore the same top and Jean that I came with. My phone was still in my back pocket. Chloe gave me a bag with water and little food. I didn't think it was necessary because I don't have intentions of staying long In the woods.

My plan is simple, I'll leave this place now and walk as fast as I can, I won't take breaks, and I'll be out of town before sunset. According to myths, Vampires aren't strong during the day, so there's a high chance of getting to town without bumping into them. But the problem is, I don't know the way out of this place all the trees look the same and I'm scared if I don't make it out by sunset, I might end up stranded or caught!

"Need help finding your way?" I heard a voice say from behind, startling me. It was Chloe's mom.

"Ma'am, I'll be fine on my own," I said, even though it was the most stupid thing to say. I f**cking need help leaving this place, and this lady just offered help but I stupidly denied it! It's dumb of me, but I don't want to be a burden.

"Oh, dear, Chloe knows her way around the woods pretty well, it's no big deal. By the way, Chloe told me the reason you want to leave so soon. She also asked if she could go with you." Her words shocked me. Did Chloe like me so much that she'll want to leave with me? Was she willing to leave the only home she has known just to go with some stranger? This made me feel guilty for hiding the truth from her. I don't deserve the amount of trust she has for me. I don't.

" You're her only friend, I don't mind Chloe following you, I know you'll need help with whatever you are going to face out there." She added.

"What?" I asked in shock

"Kendra, I don't know what your actual problem is, but I know that the story you told us was false. Whatever the issue may be, I'm sure you need help and Chloe will be able to help. So I permitted her to go with you." She said calmly. I couldn't say anything, I just hugged her and cried on her shoulder. She is so nice and understanding. My whole life, no one has ever shown me this amount of care. I wish Chloe and her mother were my families in place of Kara and Mom.

"Can you guys stop this drama already? We are wasting time, we need to leave before sunset remember?" Chloe said smiling widely.

We have been walking for hours, there was still no sign of the town. Chloe kept saying that we were almost there, but it doesn't seem so. I was already getting tired, plus, I dropped my jacket when we stopped to take a break, I had been shivering but didn't say a word because I didn't want to cause any delay. It was already noon. We had a few hours till sunset and I was already freaking out.

I still haven't told Chloe about the Vampire stuff. I don't know how she would react to this, I'm scared I'll lose her after she finds out. She's all I've got and I can't risk losing her. So, I got a new plan, I'll just move to the city and forget all about my past life. Chloe and I will start all over again.
