Chapter 20 The Most Arrogant Ex–Husband in the World

Ivan and Elissn kept praising the food.

I couldn’t help but compliment, “Cecil, these dishes look amazing!”

“Eat up. See if it suits your taste. Cecil said.

Cecil brought out the last two dishes from the kitchen, placing a plate of spicy lobster rolls in front of me, smiling softly, “You should love this.”

I was surprised.

Except for Elissa, everyone thought my taste was as bland as Christopher’s.

Before I could speak, Christopher coldly remarked, “She can’t handle spicy food. Although you were close in college, you still don’t understand her taste.”

“Mr. Valence,” Elissa spoke up for me. With a smile on her face, she joked, “You’ve been married for so long. Where is your attention focused? Hope loves spicy food the most!”

I had always accommodated him, but he had never cared about what I truly liked.

Christopher furrowed his brow, gazing deeply at me. “Do you like spicy food?”

Christopher’s aura turned gloomy. The atmosphere grew more eerie.

I knew I shouldn’t have said that at that moment.

Christopher also had a bad temper. It would only make a perfectly good meal awkward.

But I had endured for three years.

It was never the right time. Would I never be able to speak up?

I never expected that the usually indifferent person would lower his noble head in front of his childhood friend.

“We won’t have bland food in the future. We’ll eat according to your taste,” Christopher said.

I looked at him awkwardly, speechless for a moment.

I felt myself overwhelmed with sadness.

Christopher seemed willing to change something, but it wasn’t enough to set our marriage hack on track.

The more he tried, the worse I felt.

I would rather he made no changes and remained indifferent forever, disregarding my feelings.

That way, I could leave without any regrets, feeling relieved.

Elissa patted my head, smiling as she teased him, “What do you mean ‘in the future? You didn’t want her before, and now you can’t take her back from me.”

I knew Elissa’s temperament. Even if she lost her job at the Valence Group, she would stand up for me. 

While I hadn’t completely figured out Christopher, I understood him a bit. He didn’t separate work from life, and he might actually dismiss Elissa.

“Alright, let’s eat quickly!” Ivan interrupted, fearing that Elissa might truly anger Christopher. “I’m starving.”

During that meal, everyone had their own thoughts.

Following the principle of not starving the child in my stomach, I still ate to my heart’s content.

Ivan raised his glass, cheerfully toasting me, “Congratulations on moving to your new house!”

“Thank you. I can’t drink alcohol lately, so I’ll stick to juice,” I replied with a smile, raising my glass to clink with Ivan’s lightly.

They each prepared a gift for me.

Cecil handed me a beautifully wrapped gift box. “I hope you like it.”

“Thank you, Cecil,” I thanked him with a smile.

I just hadn’t expected Christopher to buy the earrings and give them to me.

Christopher’s smile grew brighter. “Do you like them?”

Elissa, Ivan, and Cecil’s presents were pricey but manageable.

Yet, these earrings? Totally out of my league.

Christopher and I were splitting up, so I instinctively wanted to refuse.

“Mr. Valence, I toast to you!” Elissa raised her glass, clinking with Christopher’s, and then downed it in one go. She continued to toast him several more times.

After they all left, before going to bed, she wearily tapped my forehead, repeating, “You’re so silly! How could you refuse? Your divorce settlement is almost leaving you with nothing. You should definitely accept some gifts.”

“I was not left with nothing. This house alone is worth eight figures,” I chuckled.

Can you easily liquidate this house? Silly! Keep the jewelry on hand, it serves as both a fashion statement and a reserve for rainy days.”

She continued, “This amount is nothing to him. Besides, if you don’t want it, he might give them to other women. Why let someone else profit?”

By the end of the housewarming banquet, Ivan and Elissa had consumed quite a bit of alcohol, slumping motionless on
