Chapter 33

Rhett shot Kristin a glance and kept his lips sealed.

Was she doing it on purpose? Well, that wasn’t the dumbest move. He had pegged Kristin as the shy, non confrontational type, but having some tricks up her sleeve was better than being a total pushover.

She’s looking out for number one. In Silvergrove City, you’re the only one who can shield her. You should probably steer clear of this hot mess,” York thought Kristin was nothing but

trouble.

Just drive,” Rhett frowned.

York clammed up quickly.

Rhett was no fool. If there was one thing he couldn’t stand, it was hassle. The Haywood heiress was already a sticky problem he couldn’t shake off, let alone adding Kristin into the

mix.

“Mr. Fitzgerald, that Ms. Haywood is on your case every day. Skip one visit, and she starts. going crazy, acting all possessed. You’ve walked into this one, and now you’re stuck,” Feeling bold from spending so much time with Rhett, York started to throw some shade.

That was like asking for a death wish.

After a pause, York spoke up again. ” Ms. Haywood is nice, pretty, and has a good heart. She’s wildly obsessed with you, a bit too clingy. Sooner or later, you will settle down. That chunk of shares Mr. Lucius, your grandfather, left you will only thaw out once you’re married.” Rhett’s brow twitched. He found York chatty tonight. “Did the Haywood family grease your palm?”

York almost bit his tongue, shaking his head like crazy. “No, no, I couldn’t possibly accept it.”

Rhett snorted, looking like a bribe was in play. “Just drive and crank up the heat.”

Noticing Kristin shivering, Rhett instinctively placed his hand on her shoulder.

His arm tensed, and he quietly shifted his gaze out the window.

Why was he even interested in this woman?

He felt that odd sensation whenever Kristin was around him, feeling his body crave her touch

more than his mind.

And yet, he was a major germaphobe. He loathed anyone getting close all these years, much less wanting to touch anyone.

As far as Rhett was concerned, Kristin wasn’t anything special. It was just that she’d been cropping up in his field of vision a lot lately.  Sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ FindNøvᴇl.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Chapter 33

When Kristin woke up at Silvergrove Hospital, only York was there. He sat in his chair, dozing off, obviously having spent the whole night.

Kristin sat up anxiously. “I’m… I’m so sorry.”

York woke up, too, giving Kristin a look of silent reproach. “You had a fever through the roof. What were you doing running off to the park?”

He thought, “What a great actress, laying it on thick to snag Mr. Fitzgerald’s attention.

“I… I’m sorry,” Kristin didn’t want to explain. “Thank you.”

It was pointless to talk. Nobody would believe her, and it would just be exhausting.

“Don’t thank me. Thank Mr. Fitzgerald for saving your bacon. Do you think this will get his attention? Dream on. Our Mr. Fitzgerald isn’t into women, especially not the dirty ones. Got it?” York tried to sound fierce, hoping to get Kristin to back off.

Kristin looked down, fidgeting with her fingers. “I… I understand. I didn’t mean to.”

“You better not have.” York huffed and ordered her some takeout. “Got you some milk and pancakes. Eat them while it’s hot. Since you’re up, I should head out.”

Kristin nodded hurriedly, glancing at the clock, showing 7:40 AM.

She had promised Vincent she’d be at the Fitzgerald Mansion by 8:30 AM, but she was so hungry.

The food came quickly. York had just left when the delivery arrived.

Kristin was grateful to Rhett, but the more she owed, the harder it was to repay.

With tears welling up, she squatted down and took a few bites, her lips going numb from the

heat.

Blowing on the food, Kristin didn’t want to waste it and kept wolfing it down. She was

starving.

At 8 AM, the doctor made his rounds.

Holding Kristin’s test results, Connor walked in, looked around, and finally found Kristin squatting on the floor eating.

“Why are you eating on the floor?” Connor was puzzled.

Kristin paused, realizing her habit.

“It’s… it’s a habit,” she mumbled. In prison, she often ate squatting in a corner.

She was afraid to sit with the other inmates, who would bully her and spit in her food.

She’d go several days hungry, only managing a few bites when she passed out from hunger.

Connor’s fingers stiffened, and he took a deep breath. He had forgotten that Kristin had just gotten out of prison. “You’re staying on IV today. You’re too frail to meet the donor criteria. I’ve informed the Turner family and Vincent to look for another donor ASAP”

Kristin kept eating, nearly choking, took a drink, then secured the food box and carefully tidied up the plastic bag to take with her.

Seeing Kristin not listening, Connor frowned. “Even if you don’t donate your kidney, you won’t last long if you don’t take good care of yourself. You have a heart condition. Did you know

that?”

Kristin kept walking. She knew her time was short.

The Turner family didn’t care if she met the donation standards.

“Kristin!” Connor was getting infuriated. Did she not care if she lived or died?

He wasn’t exaggerating. Kristin could drop dead from a cardiac arrest at any moment.
