The last time Theodore and I were in the library things got heated.

“So,” I began, “today’s class will be about demonstrating gratitude. When someone you care for does something for you, it’s good to let them know you appreciate their efforts.”

He leaned back in his seat and crossed his arms. There was a hint of stubbornness in his reaction.

The last time I told him what to do, he didn’t take it very well. I hoped this time would be different, that this night would not end up being a disaster.

“So, for instance,” I continued apprehensively, “when Thea and I baked you that cake, it would have been lovely for you to thank her. And I suppose me as well.”

“Hm,” he said. “I see.””

“And it doesn’t really have to be much,” I added. “Just a simple thank you will suffice.”

He stared at me but said nothing.

“Shall we practice then?”

“Practice what?”

“Saying thank you?”

This was not going well.

He smirked.

“Well,” he said. “You have to give me something to be thankful for.”

“Like what?”

“I’m sure you can get creative,” he shrugged.

I knew it would come to this. So long as he was learning his lesson, however, I didn’t really mind. Plus, I had been aching to pick up where we left off in the panic room anyway. I prayed that no one would interrupt us again this time.

I walked up to his armchair, leaned forward, and k*ssed him on the l*ps gently

“Thank you,” he whispered, his eyes fixed on me.

Then I leaned in again, only this time I k*ssed him more aggressively. When I pulled back, he thanked me again.

Slowly, I started to unbutton my blouse. When it hit the ground, he thanked me again.

I unbuttoned my pants next and shimmied them down to my feet before kicking them to the side.

“Thank you,” he said, his eyes following my hands.

Unclasping my bra, I tossed it to him. He grabbed it and thanked me.

“I like this,” I said.

“I do too,” he replied. “But I do think you have one more thing to take off.”

He pointed toward my underwear.

Still seated he sl*pped them off of me.

“Thank you.” I smiled.

“I guess it goes both ways,” he said.
