Zenora
19. The Stone Tablet

Emily’s point of view:

I followed my father with the plate of chocolate in my hand. I already ate one with fruit in it and another with caramel, they were delicious!

He led me up to a room which said ‘Library’ on the door and walked in. Tall windows on the long side of the room let in loads of light showing several rows of open bookcases that had thousands of books stored within. Only two people were attending this room where one was putting back books on their respective shelves, shoving a trolley forward, and another was sitting at a desk reading a massive book and skimming through the pages as if he was searching for something specific. My father greeted them both before turning to the left.

He opened another door and opened it with a key he had in one of the pockets of his robe. We motioned for me to get in and then closed the door behind me. “Please sit, honey.” My father said after turning on the lights and then pointed to a chair next to a table. It was a small room, with on both sides bookcases and small chests and strange objects. And while I was looking around, I put my plate of chocolates on the left side of the table.

He walked to the right and picked a small red oak wooden chest, which was on one of the higher shelves, and put it on the desk right in front of me. He blew the dust off the lit and opened it carefully, showing a small round, stone tablet not bigger than the size of my hand. Picking it out of the box, he placed the strange object in front of me on the table. Reaching for it, I noticed six small amethyst gems on the side and small runes carved on the top.

I looked up to my father, curiously asking what it was.

“This is something we made for you, in case you would ever come back to Zenora and found out that we were no longer alive.” My father said while sitting on the edge of the small table and a tear ran down his face. “Of course, I am still alive, but your mother left our world when you were just three months old. We wanted you to have something to remember us by if we both were not able to be with you.” He said and now he made me sad.

“Speak the words ‘Ego Filiam Tuam’ and it will show you your mother and me.”

I was so excited to see my parents together and especially my mother. Could I really see her now?

“Ego Filiam Tuam” I said with a clear voice, mimicking my father.

The carvings on the small tablet started to glow and the surface of the stone turned to black glass. Then a light came from beneath the glass and suddenly I saw a figure hovering in the light. It was some sort of hologram!

“Come here, dear.” Said the man I saw, when a female came over to him and he put his arms around her.

The young man wore a long red robe and had brown hair, just like my dad has now, except for the small patches of baldness on the sides of his forehead. The female had very long braided blond hair that fell over her shoulder and reached her thighs. She wore a beautiful golden dress but didn’t have any jewellery, besides some earrings and a simple necklace.

“My dear daughter Emily.” My mother started to talk now and she had this beautiful soft voice. But I could hear she was emotional. “From the moment you were born, I loved your smile. You are just one month old now, but you are already a very happy baby. You only cry when you need food and you grab the tail of the cat when she lays with you in your crib.” Tears came rolling down my face and my dad pulled up a chair and came to sit next to me.

“I know that you will grow up beautifully and I urge you to always follow your heart and when love comes into your life, accept it, don’t hesitate. Life is too short to wait.” My father said in the hologram and I hugged him while he was sitting next to me.

“We both love you very much and we will never forget you.” My mother said. Sᴇaʀ*ᴄh the Find ɴøᴠel.nᴇt website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“Oh, by the way, if she doesn’t listen to you, try to give her cheese.” My mother’s last words were, before the light diminished and the black glass turned to stone again.

I cried my eyes out, she was so loving and beautiful. I hate that she is gone! I held onto my dad and he just kept hugging me until I was calm and stopped crying. He cupped my face with his hands and gave me a big kiss on top of my head.

“Eat some chocolate sweetheart, it might cheer you up. It seemed to work earlier when we left the dining room.” My father said with a smile and I chuckled at what he said. I wiped my tears from my face and picked one of the chocolates and ate it.

“I love you, honey.” He said lovingly.

“I love you too, dad.”

He put the tablet in the chest and gave the chest to me. “Do you remember the words to start the hologram again?” He asked me.

“I am your daughter.” I said while smiling at him. Of course, he knows I’m his daughter but these words were the actual translation. My dad just looked amazed at me. “Yes indeed, those were the words but then in Latin, but I guess you figured that out already.” He laughed.

I wondered though how the Latin language came into this world. Latin was an Earthly language, right? But my dad proved me wrong. He showed me some books, written by Zenoran humans a long time ago. He told me that they went over to Earth and became the roman empire, but because they mixed their genes with Earth humans, the strong genetics of the Zenoran humans pretty much went away. The Spartans, however, were a race of warriors and as we know, they were too proud to share their genetics with other humans so they kept theirs strong for a lot of years.

After showing me some other things as well, my father guided me to my room and there I watched the hologram several times over again. I just loved to watch what my mother looked like and how loving my father looked at her.

I wondered though, who my mother meant, with ’if she doesn’t listen’, but couldn’t come up with any ideas for now. I’ll ask my father later when I see him again.
