Hunter

I was fueled by white hot rage as I watched Paul cause my mate pain. I could feel her fear pouring over me and my brother’s fury which matched mine. He was too pissed off to even shift. I knew that I could easily take out Paul and his rogues, but I doubted my ability to also save Maizey before he was able to hurt her.

Movement behind Paul caught my attention. I quickly glanced over to see Toby’s wolf form creeping up behind them. He was bloody and beat up, like he had just finished a fight, but his eyes were glued on Paul. He was ready to protect his Luna.

“Can you get Paul away from Maizey?” I mindlinked Toby’s wolf, Silas.

“Yes.” He growled in response.

“Wait for my move.” I ordered.

“Silas will take out Paul and I’ll get our mate. You handle the rogues.” I mindlinked Archer’s wolf, Ryder, who nodded his head once in response.

“I’m going to enjoy this.” Paul yanked roughly on Maizey’s hair and she cried out in pain. Archer and I were both at our limits, we couldn’t hold out any longer.

“I was thinking the same thing.” I growled at him right before lunging towards my mate.

When I moved, so did Ryder and Silas. Silas’ strong jaw latched onto Paul’s leg and yanked him backwards. He immediately released Maizey who fell into my arms. Ryder was on the rogues in an instant. I picked up Maizey and ran with her back into the house. I shoved her inside a broom closet without a word and ran back outside. I recognized my mother and sister’s wolves as they ran inside the house and stood guard at the closet door.

Silas was standing on top of Paul’s chest, drool falling out of his mouth as he growled in Paul’s face. Ryder was still tearing apart rogues as was the rest of the pack. I ordered for no survivors and no escapees. I marched over to Silas and grabbed Paul by his shirt, yanking him up.

“Your death won’t be quick or painless. Your suffering will match that of my mates and will last at least as long as hers.” I said dangerously, hauling him to the prison on the far side of the territory.

By the time I made it back, there was a huge bonfire in the center of the grounds and it reeked of burning flesh. My pack was burning the remains of the rogues. Miles was ensuring that the wounded made it to the infirmary. I ran inside to check on my mate.

The broom closet was empty so I followed Maizey’s smell all the way up to my bedroom. Toby was standing guard outside my door.

“Alpha, I failed you and the Luna.” Toby looked down at the ground as he hit his knees in front of me.

“No you didn’t, Toby, you saved her.” I grabbed his arm and yanked him back up, “I failed to take the threat seriously enough. I should’ve given Maizey more guards. You did your best and I’m grateful for that. All that matters is that she’s safe now.” I said, clapping him on the back. He nodded once but I could tell that he didn’t forgive himself.

“Archer is in there with the Luna.” He said, stepping away from the door.

I walked inside my room and found Archer sitting on the couch with Maizey curled up on his lap. He was stroking her hair and she was crying. Archer looked up when I entered and waved me over. I sat next to them on the couch, bringing Maizey’s legs across my lap so I could touch her, too.

“Are you alright?” I asked her softly, rubbing her back. She sniffed and looked up at me,

“Where are my brothers?” She asked, ignoring my question.

“I don’t know.” I replied, looking up at Archer and hoping he had some answers. He sighed, seeming frustrated,

“We followed their scent from the abandoned camp back to the packhouse just as they attacked. There were no other scent trails. Paul had to have brought your brothers here somewhere.”

“We’ll find them, princess.” I said as I mindlinked members of my pack to start searching for them.

“I just want them back.” She whimpered. Archer and I both struggled to comfort her.

“What did you do with Paul?” Archer asked me.

“He’s in the prison.” I answered simply. I knew Archer would understand why I didn’t kill him right away. We both wanted him to suffer.

“You didn’t kill him?” Maizey looked at me with wide eyes.

“I can force him to tell me where your brothers are.” I hadn’t originally thought of that, but now that she reminded me of her brothers’ kidnapping, I was even more glad I had kept him alive.

“Oh.” She nodded, seeming to approve of that idea, “I want to see him.” I did not approve of her idea.

“No way.”

“Not a chance.” Archer and I answered at the same time. She glared at us both, sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ (F)indNƟvᴇl.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

“My choice.” She snapped, pushing herself off our lap. She was now standing in front of us wearing a stubborn expression, but she was still crying so her face was basically impossible to say no to.

“I don’t want you near him.” I grumbled.

“You aren’t going near him.” Archer spoke over top of me. I sighed at him. Hasn’t he learned that ordering her around is never the answer? Maizey narrowed her eyes on him instead of me and I was silently thankful for that.

“I don’t have to listen to you, you can’t command me.” She snapped. Someone taught her about the Luna’s ability to ignore an Alpha command. Archer was glaring back at our mate and I could tell he was getting angry.

“He doesn’t deserve to see you, princess.” I tried to soften the tone of the conversation.

“It’s not about him. It’s about me. I’m going with or without you two and I’m going now.” She turned on her heels and stormed out of the room.

“Everything was fine until you got here.” Archer huffed at me.

“Yeah, right, this is my fault Mr. Alpha command.” I rolled my eyes at my brother as I stood from the sofa.

“So she learned the eye rolling from you, then?” Archer followed me out of the room.

“Actually, I think I learned it from her.” I paused as I thought about it. I don’t think I ever rolled my eyes before Maizey came around.

“We could stop her from seeing him.” Archer said, noticing that the hallway was now empty. Toby must’ve followed after our mate.

“Yes, because that would end well.” I said, thinking about Maizey being locked in her room while we forced her to stay away from Paul, “She would hate us forever.”

“You’re probably right. It does seem like she can hold a grudge.” Archer agreed. We walked down the steps and followed Maizey’s scent outside.

“Let me in!” Maizey was screaming at the prisoner guards who looked terrified. When they saw us they actually looked relieved.

“What’s going on here?” I hid a laugh. Maizey turned her fury on me,

“They won’t let me in.”

“That’s because only the Alpha is allowed in.” I replied smugly.

“Hunter, I swear, if you don’t let me in….” She started to threaten me and I couldn’t help the laugh that spilled out of my mouth. Archer glared at me, knowing that it was only going to piss our mate off more.

“The Luna can go wherever she pleases. Let her in.” I told the guards, waving my hand dismissively. The guards nodded and unlocked the door.

“I’m sorry baby, you just look so cute when you’re threatening me.” I tried to kiss her, but she ducked away from me. Archer shook his head as he walked past me and followed Maizey.

Paul was in the very back cell, the rest were empty. We didn’t have prisoners very often, but we were prepared for them when we did. Maizey stepped up to the bars and glared a hole straight through Paul.

“Where are Nick and Matt?” She demanded. Paul stood from his pathetic puddle on the ground and dared to smirk at my mate. Archer wrapped his arm around Maizey’s waist and pulled her back from the bars.

“You will answer the Luna.” I growled at him through the cell door.

“Those boys are where they belong. With my army.” Paul replied.

“They are nothing to you. They are my brothers and they belong with me.” Maizey yelled.

“Those boys may be human but at least they are capable men. They will take over my position with the rogues.” Paul’s voice was too calm for my liking.

“We will discover their location, whether it be the easy way or the hard way.” I threatened him.

“I personally hope you chose the hard way.” Archer said in a voice even more deadly than my own.

“You are nothing to me.” Maizey said to Paul, her expression was emotionless.

“Oh, is that true? So you haven’t thought about me everyday since our time together at the cabin? No, girl, you are the one who is nothing.” Paul spat. Maizey balled her hands into fists as she fought against Archer’s grip.

“I’m nothing? You spent nine years in prison thinking about how to get to me. The first thing you did when you got out was go after me. If anyone here is thinking about the other, it’s you and your obsession with me.” I had no idea where Maizey’s powerful voice came from but I’ll admit to being turned on by it.

Archer was so shocked he actually let her go. She slammed herself against the cell bars and glared daggers at him. Paul was speechless, for once.

“Nick, Matt, and I have been happy all those years without you. We didn’t think about you once. We don’t care about you. Nick and Matt don’t care about you. Mom was so disgusted by what you did that she killed herself.” Maizey wasn’t yelling anymore, instead her tone was level and cool.

“You are nothing but a worthless human. Your brothers had to make sure you didn’t die to save themselves from the guilt.” Paul’s facade was wavering.

“You are the one who is worthless. You are the leader of nothing, of disgusting rogues. I am the Luna of a pack with two Alphas standing beside me. I have the one thing you always wanted, power,” She spoke about our pack with pride and my heart swelled listening to her, “And now I can do the one thing you’ll never be able to do. Walk away.” She landed one last glare on Paul before gracefully marching away.

“We’ll be back for you.” I snarled at Paul and Archer nodded in agreement as we followed after our mate.
