Chapter 78 

Annabelle had unwittingly won Yelanda after sleeping for more than an hour. She then read the report about her background together with Lucas. 

“There’s something wrong with this report.” 

After reading it, Annabelle felt disgusted. 

The report said that she had bullied a female classmate in high school. She had indeed fallen out with a female classmate then. 

She treated that classmate as a good friend. Annabelle had helped her out many times, but in the end, that classmate claimed that Annabelle despised her and was her friend because she pitied the classmate. 

Once, she overheard that classmate making fun of her. It saddened Annabelle greatly. 

The classmate did not expect Annabelle to overhear her. After recovering from her shock, Annabelle turned the tables on that classmate. First, she scolded her. Then she pretended to feel so aggrieved, saying that she wanted to jump off a building. 

Originally, she thought that the person who investigated her background had written the incident randomly. Now that she thought about it more seriously, she felt that the investigation was not thorough enough. It seemed that the stories were not completely true. 

“Since then, I don’t like to make friends anymore,” Annabelle said softly. She did not understand why her supposedly carefree student days were so complicated. “Maybe I’m stupid. I don’t know how to get along with people.” 

“This has nothing to do with your stupidity.” Lucas patted her head. “Some people are born despicable.” 

Annabelle did not react at first. Soon, she realized that Lucas was on her side and was rather happy. 

Shortly after, Lucas seemed to have read something peculiar. His eyes immediately widened. 

“By the way, what’s going on here?” Lucas patted her little face to comfort her. Without waiting for her to speak, he pointed at the part where she stole 

someone’s artwork. 

When Annabelle read that section, she was not getting angry. She merely looked resigned and defeated. 

The incident dealt a huge blow to her. Till now, she was still unwilling to pick up her pen to draw again. 

“That person was a senior student in my school.” Annabelle hesitated for a long time before saying softly, “I used to be very good at drawing. The professors said that my drawings were very special. At that time, there was a drawing competition jointly organized by several art academies. I participated in the competition too. However, the drawing I submitted was signed by that student. Also, the artwork which was supposedly submitted by me was actually done by him.” 

“Everyone then accused you of stealing his work?” Lucas raised his eyebrows and asked. 

“When I asked him about it, he knelt in front of me and said that his mother was seriously ill. He needed the money badly. As he was worried about his mother’s illness and was unable to calm down and draw, However, he needed the prize money and a high paying job.” 

“So you did not pursue the matter?” Lucas raised his eyebrows and asked, “You’re so generous. Don’t tell me you’re interested in that student?” 

When Annabelle heard this, she rolled her eyes at him. “Am I that kind of person? If I was interested in men, I would be interested in a handsome man like you.” 

“Yes, although you’re a little stupid, you have good taste.” Lucas nodded, agreeing with her. 

Annabelle rolled her eyes. 

“Of course, I didn’t let the matter rest. Annabelle continued, “I went to the hospital to check if his mother was really sick. I even asked the doctor if it was true that he urgently needed a sum of money for his mother’s operation. The exasperating thing was that his mother was completely fine. She even thought that I was his classmate. She held my hand affectionately when I visited her at the hospital.” 

At that time, Annabelle was doted on by her parents. Nathan was also an obedient boy. Her family was well–off. Hence, she never had to worry about anything. When she saw the senior student kneeling in front of her, her heart softened. 

However, she did not expect that she would have to bear the consequences of not exposing him. During that period, she led a miserable life. Fortunately, he professor knew her character well and could detect that something was amiss. He went to look for her and spoke to her about the matter. When he found out what had happened, he only sighed. Of all the solutions available, he chose the dumbest. 

Annabelle thought to herself, ‘It was so true. If the senior student had not met a kind–hearted junior like her, he would not have gotten off so easily.” 

“The professor then asked that student to sign a letter to compensate me financially for my mental distress. The professor knew that our family didn’t lack money. He also knew that the student’s family was in financial difficulties. The professor didn’t ask him to give me the money immediately. Instead, he told the student to pay me when he had the money.” 

“Mental distress? How much did he have to pay you?” Lucas sneered. A person’s reputation was not something that money could buy. 

“45 thousand dollars.” Annabelle’s voice was soft. 

After saying that, she saw her husband’s disdainful took again, 45 thousand dollars was indeed nothing to him, but to an ordinary family with a seriously ill patient, it was not a small sum. 

“Did you agree to it?” Lucas looked at her and asked coldly.

“Since it’s in the past, why did they send this report to me?” Lucas waved the document in front of her. “I trust you, that’s why I don’t take it seriously. What would others think of you if they saw this?” 

Annabelle did not know what to say. 

At this moment, Annabelle realized that something was wrong. Who was so interested in her to dig out all the information about her? Who had investigated everything about her since she was young? 

Looking at the dumbfounded Annabelle, Lucas simply guffawed. 

“Did that woman investigate my background? Does she still suspect my feelings for you?” Annabelle was furious. 

“Don’t be angry.” Lucas patted her head and comforted her gently. “Leave this to me. I’ll handle this matter.” 

Lucas also felt that Yoland had gone too far. 

Lucas did not think much about what Howard said earlier. He did think the latter was not so smart to investigate Annabelle. 

“Talk to her nicely and tell her not to harbor any bad intentions toward me. Otherwise, don’t come to our house anymore.” Annabelle reminded Lucas. She decided that this matter had to be dealt with seriously.
