Chapter 26 

Damien waited for two days for Ana’s phone call. The one where she called Damien up and told him he was an asshole for implying she was lying about Alan. 

Damien knew he had done more than imply, but Anastasia never called. Damien asked Wynne if Ana received the results. Once he got confirmation that she had, he was surprised to know Ana hadn’t even opened the envelope. Anastasia had always known what the results would say. She didn’t need a piece of paper to tell her. 

Damien thought about calling her, but Damien didn’t have the courage. Calling her meant she would admit to his mistakes. He was going to do it eventually, but he had to learn how to swallow his pride. That was not an easy task for a billionaire. He was also aware that his parents were waiting for him to come to a decision so they could meet their one and only grandchild. 

Anastasia had given him two weeks to come to a decision, but how could he come to such an important decision in such a short span of time? He could sign for billions of dollars in the blink of an eye, but this was different. This was his own blood! Wynne said it was an easy decision… that it wasn’t a decision at all. But she didn’t understand. It was the life of Anastasia. Alan, and him all included in that one decision he made. 

It had been over a week and work had been a pain in Damien’s ass. Meeting after meeting left him exhausted. Working wasn’t exactly as he had expected since he met Anastasia again, but he still had all the experience to not break down. 

Damien was starving on Thursday and walked into the pantry to grab something to eat. He froze when he saw Anastasia standing on the island with a huge smile on her face. She was stunning and Damien hadn’t seen her smile like that before. He felt a pang of guilt as he realized he had never made her feel happy enough to smile like that for him. Wynne and James. were being silly and entertaining their tiny audience. Alan was sitting on the granite counter. He was facing away from Damien so he couldn’t see his face, but Damien could hear the bell–like laughter floating around the pantry. 

“Do it ‘gain,” Alan laughed and clapped his hands. 

Damien watched as the always–serious James took two small forks and helped Alan get some fork teeth. Anastasia had her head hung, giggling. There was an empty mug of coffee in front of her and that must have had something with how active 

she was. 

Damien knew Anastasia would come over for a meeting. It just so happened that she brought her son along. Her office was flexible and so was his company. Hence, he had completely spaced out when he saw them together. He wasn’t upset. He wasn’t angry. He was… reserving his right to respond. 

He looked back at Anastasia as she lifted her eyes to meet his. He saw her take a deep breath. Damien didn’t know how long they stood there, staring at each other, but he soon realized that the room had grown silent. Everyone else was al

“Who’s dat, Unca Jamie?” Alan asked. 

For some reason, that question hurt. The fact that his own kid was asking his employee who he was just didn’t seem right. 

“My kid?‘ Damien screamed in his head. Did he have a right to call Alan that? Alan didn’t even know who Damien was. 

“That’s Mr. Wright, baby. He is Uncle Jamie and Aunt Wynne’s boss,” Ana responded softly. 

“I am just here to get some coffee,” Damien announced, knowing he looked like a wreck. 

Everyone was fairly quiet with conversations scattered across the room. Damien felt bad that his presence had depressed the mood. He watched as Wynne refilled Ana’s coffee mug and Ana took a big, scorching gulp of it. 

Damien didn’t know where to stand. The closer he got to Alan, the more anxious he became. 

“Do you want something stronger?” James asked him. 

“Thank you,” Damien sighed, looking at the colored drink in James‘ hand. He took it appreciatively. 

“I am glad you got out for some fresh air,” he said in a voice so low that only Damien could hear him.

Chapter 26 

Damien simply nodded and took a sip. He flinched as the alcohol went down his throat. He wasn’t sure this was allowed on office premises, but he was the boss, so he made the rules. 

“Alan, honey, do you want to help your mommy to speak to a couple of people in the other room?” Wynne asked. 

Damien had a full view of him now that he was standing next to Alan. Damien should have looked at the kid earlier, then he would have never said some of the horrible things he had before. 

He could never have denied this boy was his. He would beg to say that a cloning machine was used to make a copy of his. 

Damien cleared the lump in his throat. Alan caught him looking and offered him a toothy grin. Damien couldn’t help but smile back. Completely unaware of the little exchange, Anastasia quickly snatched Alan off the counter and set him on the floor. With that she left the pantry and Damien could see her go into a meeting room. 

“You need to be nice to her,” Wynne scolded softly. 

“What did I do?” Damien asked innocently. 

“Nothing yet,” Wynne said, giving him a pointed look. 

It was nice to know his employees had such little faith in him. 

It just so happened that the project team was having lunch outside. Damien walked into the restaurant and found that a few people were already seated. The spot left open for him was right across from Anastasia and Alan. Damien looked up at Ana, but she refused to meet his eyes. 

She hadn’t said a single word to Damien since he had left her house over two weeks ago. Damien had no idea what he wanted to hear from her but the tension was killing him and the lunch had just started. 

Damien stared at Alan who was sitting on a high chair. He had a plate of food in front of him. 

“That’s a lot of food for such a little person,” Damien said to Alan quietly. 

Alan looked up and scowled. Damien couldn’t help but chuckle as he thought about how Anastasia looked the same when she frowned. Especially when she was annoyed. He had seen it a lot recently. 

“I’m not wittle,” Alan grumbled.
