Chapter 39 

Ana recovered as quickly as she could. 

“I am not a hypocrite,” she hissed. “Alan has always been and always will be my first priority. I take care of my child day in and day out, love him unconditionally and ensure he gets the best of everything. On top of that, I work and excel in my career, too. So when I go to a rushed meeting, I am allowed to leave my son at home under the care of my parents.” She gulped. “I have never brought a man into our home and Alan has never seen me do anything inappropriate. You have managed that in less than the two months you have known him. So, you can shut the fuck up. Damien!” 

Damien scoffed. “You’re telling me you have never had sex where Alan could have accidentally caught you? You shared a bedroom with Alan since he was born.” 

Ana didn’t know why she was discussing her sex life with Damien again. 

“I have not brought any man to my house. I always have a baby monitor or CCTV on so that if Alan even stirs when I am not allowed, I know immediately. Just because I didn’t sleep with anyone doesn’t mean I am forbidding you to. But please, keep your surroundings in mind. And that woman, Damien? Seriously?” 

Damien’s face twisted in anger. “You can’t stop me from spending time with Alan, Anastasia,” he growled. “I will take you to family court if I have to.” 

And there the threat she was waiting for was. It scared her because he had the resources she didn’t have. But Ana couldn’t let Damien see how scared she was. Damien was going to know exactly what would happen if he tried to take her child away 

from her. 

“Great job, Damien Wright,” she snarled. “I will see you there. I am sure the judge would love to hear about you propositioning your employee. That is a gross human resources violation. Oh, don’t forget about how I have a well–paying job and don’t want a single penny from you. I just don’t want my child to be handed from nanny to nanny, one girlfriend to the next.” 

“Fuck!” he screamed. “Why do you keep doing this to me, Anastasia?” 

“Don’t think about challenging me, Damien. This is not a game you can play.” 

“What the hell is going on here?” Carl asked, coming through the door. “I could hear the two of you yelling from outside the house.” 

So much for having a private conversation. It all went out of the window when they started yelling. 

“Nothing!” Damien snapped. 

“Oh, you’re embarrassed now?” Ana scoffed and turned to Carl. “Mr. Wright, Alan and I walked in on your son being intimate with a woman in the middle of his office,” Ana said, glaring at Damien.. 

“Shut up,” Damien growled. “That’s not how it happened.” 

“Then what happened?” Carl asked calmly. “Damien?” he called when he didn’t respond. 

Damien’s hand was in his hair. “The woman came onto me. I didn’t ask for it. I was about to push her away when Ana walked 

in.” 

“Really? Does such a coincidence exist?” Carl asked. “You know what your reputation would be if people knew you were with an employee…” Carl sounded disappointed. 

“She won’t say a thing.” 

“You don’t know that, Damien. People are vicious when they have a lot to win.” 

Ana looked over at Damien. His’s lips were set in a grimace. 

Chapter 39 

“How did Alan react?” Carl asked in a low voice. 

“He didn’t say anything but I am afraid to ask. I was just hoping that he either didn’t see or is too young to know what was happening.” 

“Do you think it is better to pretend nothing happened?” 

“I really didn’t mean for him to see… Do you think I hurt him?” 

Damien looked at her and Ana could see the pain. Ana’s anger began to fade. He really hadn’t meant for any of it to happen. Yeah, Ana walked in, but if he was right, the other woman had come on. Anastasia couldn’t blame Damien for not pushing her away quicker. 

“I don’t think you traumatized him. Damien. At least you had all your clothes on. I don’t think he saw anything, but he could have. Just… try harder next time?” 

Carl looked between them before going about his business. 

“I am no good at being a father. How do 

you do it?” 

“Be a mother?” 

“Give everything up and put him first?” 

Anastasia chuckled. Damien had no idea what it was like for mothers. “I didn’t have a choice. No one wanted to be with a pregnant woman. I didn’t have friends or colleagues I could hang out with. I didn’t have a boyfriend to screw around. I worked and took stayed at home to nurse my pregnancy. When Alan was born, there was nothing for me to give up.” 

“Nothing?” he gasped. 

Ana raised a brow. “What kind of a man do you think wants to date a woman with a child and a high–stress job? I would have no time for romance.” 

“And what about Marcus?”

“How hard for him,” Damien sneered. “Must have been a chore to be around you.” 

Anastasia rolled her eyes. “You haven’t even met Marcus. He is a good person. He has done a lot for me.” 

“And how do you know he wasn’t playing the long game to get laid?” Damien questioned. 

“Four years? If that was all he wanted, he would have run away screaming when I told him I was pregnant. But Marcus didn’t. He accompanied me to the doctor and held my hair when I was puking whatever I ate.” 

Ana noticed a flash of pain on Damien’s face. He closed his eyes and swallowed. They didn’t speak for a while. 

Damien kept lus eyes on the ground when he finally spoke. “Are you really not going to let me spend time with Alan?” 

The look on his face was almost like a lost child. 

“I didn’t say I would take your time away. I just need to know that you will put Alan first. That you won’t put him in situations hard for him to handle.” 

Damien nodded. “I am sorry for threatening you.” 

It wasn’t her intention to ignore his apology. She would have loved to tell him that it was okay, but it wasn’t. Just the mention 

of a court battle over Alan made her feel terrible. Until she would fully trust his intentions, she would worry. 

All she wanted was to be home with her baby. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Damien.”
