Chapter 40 

Right before sleep that niglu, Damien called Anastasia in hopes of talking to Alan. He didn’t react any differently than usual. Alan told Damien about a cartoon and the gory details of the episode that flew right over his head. But he didn’t need to understand. At least Alan didn’t ask who the woman trying to kiss him was. 

A few days later, Anastasia called early to tell Damien that the little boy had a fever and was vomiting, so they couldn’t make it to the park. While Damien was disappointed, he needed to know Alan was okay. 

“Do you want me to come over?” Damien asked softly. 

Ana was quick to decline his offer. Damien was sure Ana was still mad so he called his parents to meet their sick grandkid. 

The day after, Damien called again and found out Alan was much better, but still recuperating. It had been nearly a week. since he had seen Alan and he was getting anxious. He was quickly realizing that he couldn’t live without seeing Alan. How could he go from not knowing his son existed to being a father in such a short time? 

The woman who had tried to approach him didn’t come back to work. Apparently, one word from Damien about misconduct was enough to get the woman laid off. When he thought about how important Alan was…. enough for him to fire an employee and make him worry if he was sick, Damien went around calling his lawyer. 

“Can you make a trust fund?” 

The lawyer raised a brow. “May I ask for whom?” 

“My son. It should be done in secret. I don’t want anyone to find out.” 

The lawyer nodded even though he was curious. “I understand. But next time, Mr. Wright, please tell me such sensitive information in advance. I don’t want another baby mommy coming out of the woodwork to take your money.” 

“You don’t have to worry about that,” Damien assured. The lawyer didn’t seem to believe him. How embarrassing. 

Damien pulled up outside Ana’s house one fine evening. He saw Ana’s car parked outside and practically skipped into the house. Mrs. Reid was sitting in the living room, busy watching television. 

“Is Alan back from his date with Grandpa yet?” he asked. 

“Not yet,” Mrs. Reid chirped. 

“Where is Ana?” 

“In her room.” 

Damien slowly walked up the stairs and knocked on her room. 

“Come in,” he heard her voice. He opened the door and peered through. He heard some rustling and then she appeared. She was wearing sweatpants and a t–shirt, but her face was blotchy. It looked like she had been crying. 

“What’s wrong?” he asked. 

“I’m fine. Just tired,” she said nasally. 

“Oh… I’m sorry I wasn’t here to help with Alan when he was sick, so I wanted to do something nice.” 

Damien watched her expression. 

“What? They should be back home in half an hour.” 

Damien laughed. “I got him something.” 

Ana narrowed her eyes in suspicion. “I don’t have a good feeling about this.” 

Damien smiled. “It’s nothing grand. I just wanted to give Alan something…” 

“What is it?” Ana asked warily. 

“Can I bring it in?” 

“What is it?” 

“A baby piano.” He practically jumped as he took in the shock on Ana’s face. “I ordered it last week and they called me this morning to tell me it was ready. I wanted to get it to the house today so that Alan got a get well soon surprise.” 

She was quiet for a while, making Damien squirm. “I gotta see this,” she broke out into a smile. 

Damien could no longer contain his excitement. “It’s not big, but I had to get it delivered by the company.” It took a good twenty minutes for the baby grand to be put in the right place. Damien just wanted things to be perfect before Alan gol home. 

“What do you think?” Damien asked her. 

She wrapped her arm around her bicep and leaned her head against Damien. He could feel his heart speed up. “He is going to love it. But I need to warn the neighbors… I hope they don’t call the police for disturbance…” 

“It’s really just a toy. It would be good for him to practice and the noise won’t be too loud,” Damien assured quickly. 

“You are amazing,” she replied. Much to his dismay, she started to pull away. He followed her into the living room and they waited. Damien waited on pins and needles until Alan came in through the door. 

“Damien!” he sang the moment he saw him. “Do you wanna play in my room?” He started jumping up and down. 

“Baby, Damien has something he wants to show you first.” 

Alan whined a little but clutched onto Damien’s hand. When they opened the door, Alan make a squeaking noise. 

“Is that for me?” 

“Yes, it is, kid. Do you like it?” 

“WEAWWWWY?” 

Damien hummed. 

“It’s smol… like me!” 

Damien laughed and ruffled Alan’s hair. “Yes, it’s your size.” He didn’t want to make the same mistake and call him small again. 

Alan looked up at Damien and before he knew it, Alan was in his arms, hugging Damien tightly. “Fank you…” 

“You’re welcome,” he mumbled. 

He spent the rest of the night tinkering on the baby grand and playing with Damien. Ana cooked some dinner and Damien stayed back to enjoy a laid–back family meal. It wasn’t until Alan started dozing off in his seat that Ana ended the night.

Damien nodded enthusiastically. Really, Alan didn’t even wake up for a bit until early in the morning when he wanted to use the washroom. The next morning he woke up and was getting ready to leave. But he couldn’t find Ana anywhere. She 

knocked on his door but didn’t get a response. 

Mrs. Reid walked up and asked, “What’s the matter?” 

“I don’t know. Ana’s not answering her door. It’s already seven and her car is in the driveway.” 

“She’s just asleep. She is just relieved you slept with Alan last night…” Mrs. Reid looked at her watch. “We have some work. So, wake Ana up quickly.” With that, the house was silent. 

Damien called Ana again. No answer. He knocked and got no answer.
