“It’s okay.” Ana said softly.
“Oh no, it’s not. Damien, introduce me to the lovely lady!”
“Ana, this is Mrs. Thea. Mrs. Thea, this is my Ana.”
“Your Ana?”
Damien nodded with a grin.
“Well, she must be something if you are bringing her to your hidden haven, right? You’ve never brought anyone here
before.
Ana looked at him curiously.
“Take her to your spot and I will make us some tea, okay?”
Damien kissed the older woman on the cheek. “Thank you.”
“Your secret spot?” Ana asked when he reached for her hand.
“I’ll show you. Come.”
He led her past the staircase and through the hallway to reach the back of the house. A pair of sliding doors hid the real spot that Damien so loved. He hadn’t come to this place in years and he was surprised he hadn’t come immediately when he found out about Alan. It would have saved him a lot of heartache.
Damien opened the door and Ana gasped. “Oh my god.. This…” She was at a loss for words.
They were staring at the enormous greenhouse. Wilderness surrounded them, but the dome top allowed them to look at the sky above. On clear nights, they could see the stars shining brightly. Greenery and brightly colored flowers surrounded them. It was a tropical greenhouse with virtually any type of flower one could imagine. Damien started walking inside and Ana followed.
“When I was in college, I was living in a dorm. Carl thought it was essential for a student to experience college to the fullest. I used to live in an apartment nearby and could see this greenhouse from the roof. I came up one night when I was stressed. I was walking around and Thea seemed to sense that I had a lot on my mind. She invited me in for tea and she was so sweet that I couldn’t refuse. Her husband had passed a few years ago and well… she took you gardening. I fell in love with this place.”
“I can see why.” Ana sighed happily.
“You haven’t even seen the best part.”
He led Ana to the spot he liked the most. It was a metal bench that looked over the whole place.

“I started coming back a couple of times a week. I would sometimes help her tend to the plants. It became the only place I felt relaxed, really.”
Ana looked over her shoulder and found Mrs. Thea approaching them with a tray of tea.
“This is beautiful,” Ana said as the old woman set the tray down on the little metal table.
“Well, I told my Neo that if he was going to marry me and keep me from my family, he was going to have to build me at conservatory. So, he did.”
“Your Neo?” Damien teased.
“Yes, my Neo. When you are married as long as I was to that man, you earn ownership of the other person.”
Damien laughed. “Mrs. Thea, I have something to tell you.”
Thea looked between Ana and him and clapped her hands happily. “Are you getting married?”
“No, not yet anyway.” Damien winked at Ana. “But we do have some other news.”
“Okay, then. Don’t leave me in suspense,” she urged.
Damien felt nervous all of a sudden. He had told many people about Alan but in front of this gentle old lady, he felt like he had committed a crime. “Well Ana and I have a little boy.”
Thea looked confused as she processed the words. So, Damien continued.
“His name is Alan. He is three years old and he is an amazing little boy.”
Thea’s eyes widened. “Damien, you called me half a year ago. You didn’t think to mention that you had a son then
Damien looked at Ana helplessly. He hadn’t thought through that part of the conversation.
Chapter 82
Ana saved him as she took the tea she was being offered. “That is my fault,” she said.
“How is it your fault?” Thea asked, sipping her own cup.
“I didn’t tell him about Alan until a few months ago.”
Thea choked on her tea.
“It’s a complicated story and we are still coming to terms with it,” Damien explained.
“Indeed… it must be a complicated story,” she said blankly.
“Well, I have been in love with Anastasia for years now,” Damien admitted, slipping his arm around Ana’s waist. The room was quiet as Thea appraised the two of them.
“Ah, so you finally found your soulmate.”
Damien cleared her throat. Not that Ana didn’t know how he felt but Thea was particularly forthright about what she thought. It felt like she could see completely into his soul and would reveal it to Arla at any moment.
“So, Alan,” he said, trying to redirect the conversation. “He is an amazing kid.”
“I would love to meet him,” she said softly.
They spent most of the morning in the greenhouse talking about Alan and their work. Thea asked Ana questions about herself and told stories about her childhood and marriage. She was old but her stories remained vivid. She told the couple about her five children and several grandchildren and great–grandchildren. The entire family was supposed to come down for the holidays.
She offered to make them lunch which Ana accepted on the terms that she would help with it. Afterward, when Thea left them alone to tend to her garden. Damien sat down and looked out of the glass. He smiled as Ana sat next to him on the bench and leaned her head against his shoulder.
“This place is perfect.”
“I know, I have always loved it here.”
Ana was silent for a second. “Why haven’t you come back in so long?”
Damien didn’t have a proper answer for that. “I don’t know.”
They left right after lunch, promising Thea to come back soon with Alan. By that point, Damien was relaxed and had almost forgotten what had happened the previous day. Almost.
