Chapter

Farren’s POV

While sipping my coffee, I glanced at Jasmine, who approached me with a meaningful look.

“Hey, are you alright?” she asked.;

I shrugged my shoulders and took another sip.

Jasmine glanced around nervously before leaning in closer and speaking in a hushed tone. “I mean, your husband could be the guy involved in the scandal. It’s hard to believe you’re okay with that.”

“Nothing is certain,” I replied, trying to defend Alaric.

Honestly, his reaction and response this morning made it pretty clear. He was definitely the one involved in the scandal.

Huh. What’s the point of asking him to stay faithful during our marriage if he’s just going to publicly expose his infidelity?

“Farren?”

Jasmine’s concerned voice broke through my thoughts, calling out my name. I glanced up from my coffee, meeting her

gaze.

“Hey, is something wrong with your relationship?” she asked, her

relationship?” she asked, her worry evident.

I sighed inwardly, knowing that there was indeed something very wrong.

My husband despised me, and he had been planning to divorce me for months. To make matters worse, he had betrayed our vows by having an affair.

But these were secrets I couldn’t just spill to anyone.

“I guess I should have seen the signs when you suddenly got married,” Jasmine. continued. “Especially when you mentioned that your husband’s name is Alaric Ford, which sounds eerily similar to the infamous Alaric. What really happened?”

I hesitated, chewing on my lower l*p as I debated whether or not to confide in her. Could I trust Jasmine with the truth?

“Actually, I…”

Before I could respond, a loud voice echoed through the room, accompanied by the sound of objects crashing to the ground.

“WHERE THE HELL IS FARREN!” the voice boomed from a distance.

Jasmine and I exchanged startled glances, hastily abandoning our coffees and rushing towards the source of the commotion.

My heart raced in my chest, sensing that something was terribly wrong. And my intuition proved me right.

Inside my office, a chaotic scene unfolded as my father caused a disturbance.

“Make that ungrateful woman come out and face me!” he bellowed, casting menacing glares at the onlookers.

My gaze fell upon the scattered objects on the floor. They were my belongings, forcefully swept away from my desk by my

Jasmine grabbed my wrist just as I was about to step forward and confront him.

“Farren,” she said, shaking her head.

She understood better than anyone how much I dreaded seeing my father. But deep. down, I knew that he wouldn’t rest until he saw my face.

“Don’t worry, I’ve got this,” I reassured her, pulling my hand away. With a surge of bravery, I turned to face my father, Joaquin.

Gasping for breath, my father glared at me with fury in his eyes. “Finally! You decided to show up! Do you really think I can’t/track you down just because you changed your number?”

I glanced at my manager, who stood there with crossed arms. I knew I was in for a severe scolding soon.

“Sir,” my coworker interjected, “unauthorized individuals are not allowed here. Please leave.”

But his warnings fell on deaf ears. He pointed his finger at me and retorted, “I won’t leave this place until that b*tch gives me my money!”

Before he could cause any more trouble in my workplace, I leaned in closer and whispered, “Come with me outside.”

I then exited the office with him right on my heels.

I took him to the emergency stairway, a place that everyone rarely passes by. Now alone, I faced my father and asked him, “What do you want from me this time?”

A wicked grin spread across his face. “You know damn well what I want, Farren. I deserve my inheritance. I’m certain that your Grandfather left all his money to you. So, you better hand over my money while I’m still asking politely.”

Ha! This despicable man probably squandered away whatever little money he had left on his mistress, and now he’s trying to squeeze money out of me that he’ll never get his hands on.

“You have no inheritance left,” I retorted.

“Don’t be such a joker,” he replied, chuckling. “I’ni his son. I have every right to inherit. his f*cking money!”

“If you want proof, go ahead and ask MY family’s lawyer. He’ll show you Grandpa’s signature and will, which clearly states that he wouldn’t give you a single cent.”

“That’s utter b*llshit!” he shouted. “I’m still a part of the Daughtler family! Doesn’t that mean anything?”

Yes, it does mean something. After all, Grandpa removed you from OUR family register. So, it makes perfect sense.”

Father moistened the corner of his tongue. He advanced towards me and whispered, “Listen up. Quit being cheeky. I DESPERATELY NEED MONEY right this instant, so be an obedient child and just hand it over. You won’t enjoy the consequences if you continue to defy your father’s command.”

“That’s absolutely hilarious,” I retorted. “You were never a true father figure to me. So, don’t even think about being a jerk and demanding that I fulfill my role as your daughter. I have no desire to share a drop of blood with you. And that means, no matter what you do, you’ll never see a penny from me. NOT IN A MILLION YEARS AND OVER MY DEAD BODY.”

His rage caused him to tremble before he suddenly erupted, “You’re really pushing my limits!” He forcefully shoved my shoulder.

“Ouch!” I stumbled backward, and as my feet teetered on the edge of the staircase, I swiftly clutched onto the railings.

Gasping for breath, I glanced behind me and witnessed the imminent danger.

‘Damn. I nearly plummeted down those stairs.

Perhaps I made a poor choice in selecting this location to be alone with him.

“Over your dead b*dy?” Father raised his voice.

1 glanced ahead and saw him leaning towards me.

“Hah! You must be so proud of yourself, Farren. Did you really think I wouldn’t lay a finger on you just because you’re your mother’s child?”

As he drew closer, I caught a glimpse of his bloodshot eyes.

“Are you… under the influence right now?” I asked, dumbfounded.

The deranged lunatic simply laughed menacingly at me.

He’s back to his old habits.

Realizing that this could escalate into something dangerously serious, I reached for my phone, intending to call the police. But he slapped my hand, causing my phone to crash. onto the ground.

“You’ll regret treating me like this!”

The next thing I knew, he was about to strike me.

Time seemed to slow down as I stood frozen in place.

I am strong. I can defend myself. Yet, strangely, I couldn’t move a muscle in front of this man. It was because his presence always resurrects a haunting memory from the past. The image of my mother being brutally beaten by him.

My vision turned pitch black, and a surge of anger consumed me.

“Cut it out immediately!” Jasmine’s voice snapped me back to reality, and everything suddenly became bright.

I witnessed my father’s hand suspended in mid–air. His attempt to strike me was thwarted by the arrival of people entering the emergency stairway. As I turned my head, I caught sight of my friend, Jasmine, accompanied by the company guards.

“I knew you would stoop this low,” Jasmine bellowed as she approached.

She forcefully pulled me away from my father and positioned herself as a shield between us.

“What do you think you’re doing? Interfering in my affairs?” my father questioned. “I am merely educating my daughter. So, mind your own business.”

“Education?” Jasmine scoffed. “Impressive. You have the audacity to appear in front of her and pretend to be a father. Hey! You have the nerve to come back and ask for money after cheating on your wife and abandoning your child!”

Hearing those words, I hung my head low and tightly clenched my fists.

I scoffed at my father’s words. His eyes met mine, and he quickly realized the hatred I held for him. At that moment…

“Get over here, you little brat!” He raised his hand, ready to strike.

But the guards intervened and forcefully removed him.

“Let me go! I need to teach that b*tch a lesson!” he yelled as they dragged him away.

I looked at him one last time. Our eyes locked, and he screamed, “You’ll regret this, Farren! I’ll make sure you’ll regret this!”

With a loud slam, the door closed.

Father was gone.

My legs gave out, and I collapsed onto the floor, drained of all energy.

“Farren!” Jasmine called out, rushing to my side and catching me in her arms.

Gasping for breath, I managed to say, “Thank you. Thank you for being there.”

She gently stroked my back, comforting me. “Yeah. I’m so damn glad I followed you. I knew that jerk would try something. You should never be alone with him again, got it?”

No.

On the contrary, it could be the complete opposite. I was relieved when Jasmine arrived before I lost consciousness. Otherwise, I might have committed something truly dreadful.

After that horrendous incident, I returned to my workplace and apologized to our manager. I received a scolding that seemed to last forever. I made a promise that such

thing would never occur again in the future, and then I resumed my duties.

When my work finally concluded, Jasmine kindly offered to drive me home. However, I declined her offer, stating that I could manage on my own. The truth is, I simply didn’t want her to run into my husband.

She would only become even more worried.

“I am only fortunate with one man in my life,” I declared as I stepped out of my car.

And that man is my Grandfather.

“Haa.”

Now, I couldn’t help but miss him and my mother.

Feeling so down because of everything that happened recently in my life, like finding out about my husband’s scandal on the internet and having a father who barged inside my workplace asking for money, I entered the house.

I felt completely pathetic, which is completely out of character for me..

“You’re back,” he said.

I halted my steps and glanced at the man who greeted me. It was my husband, Alaric. He sat on the couch with his legs crossed, exuding an air of arrogance that couldn’t be

shaken.

He was the one who explicitly phrase “Welcome back home.”

Ugh. I’ve had enough. I just wanted to shut down completely right now. Why do I have to deal with him at the end of such a dreadful day?

I wasn’t exactly thrilled about having a conversation with him, so I reluctantly made my way towards him. However…

“The news is fake.

Alaric’s words stopped me in my tracks.

I turned around to face him.

He stood there, hands in his pockets.
