From Low To High: Book 2
Chp 1

It’s the day before our first big heist targeted a small bank on the other side of town, me and the guys are all hyped for our first big mission. It is about nine in the morning and I decide I should probably get up and get ready for my 10:30am shift at the cafe, I walk over to my small pack of supplies and grab my brush, make-up and a small red sweater. When I am done putting my makeup on I brush my hair and go over to my little tent I made out of old sheets and changed my raggedy old shirt to put on the small red sweater. It’s pretty warm in the factory but when I leave the building I am so glad I put my sweater on, light snowflakes fall from the sky as I walk my way to work. As I near my job at the cafe I pull my hair into a loose ponytail, I finally make it in through the back door and am greeted by my boss,

“Hello Max! How are you today?” he says with his cute asian accent and stands in the doorway waiting for my response.

“I’m good Mr.Woo, how are you today?” I say back in a cheery voice, he just smiles and walks into the back office. I went over to my locker in the back of the cafe to get my waitress uniform and slip it on over my clothes. Not long after Mr.Woo puts up the open sign we get a customer “Hello, welcome to the cafe!” I quickly walk up to the man and lead him over to a small booth by the window “Let me know when you decide what you would like sir” and with that I smile and leave his side. After he is seated a couple of our regulars come in “Hello Sarah and Ron, thank you for your visit” as I smile at the two they walk over to their usual table near the back of the cafe. I like having those two as our customers they’re always so nice and never cause any trouble, as I am thinking about that I hear the man from before call over to me,

“Miss I would like to order now” wow, he has such a gentle voice. I make my way over to him with my note pad at the ready,

“What would you like today sir?” as I watch the man speak I notice he’s got slick black hair and a small scar on his nose,

“I was wondering what you might recommend, I am visiting for the first time in a while and am not familiar with the area. So what’s your favorite?” I look at him with some doubt that he isn’t from around here but keep my upbeat attitude,

“I don’t eat here personally but my favorite drink would have to be our all year mint latte with a pump of cinnamon added” the man looks back to the menu to try and find it “Oh no, it isn’t on the menu I made the concoction myself” with that he smiles and says,

“Okay, I will have that in a large and some biscuits and gravy, can the chef add sausage and egg into the gravy?” when he is speaking a huge smile creeps across my face as I remember all the times me and Sam go to Chris’s restaurant to eat that same thing. I look at the man sitting there and say,

“Yes of course, I also like that on my biscuits and gravy. I’m guessing you want the eggs scrambled?” he nods and I take the order up to the counter and hand it to Mr.woo. I head over to our regulars and they order the same latte as always, when I pass by the man sitting near the window he waves his hand at me for me to come over, I do as i’m suggested and head over to him,

“Did you need something sir?” the man pulls out his phone and asks,

“Have you seen anything strange around here? Something suspicious or anything?” I stare at the man with my mouth gaped open,

“No sir, may I ask why you are asking?” he then pulls out a badge and continues,

“My name is Max”. After a couple minutes of talking about the area I leave to grab his food “One moment Let me grab your food” when I return Jack is talking on his phone so I just set the food in front of him and give a little wave while walking away. As i am bringing the regulars their drinks I hear Jack speak aloud

“No, we have to find them, they can’t continue mugging people for fun!” with a rough voice. When I get done with those two I walk back over to Jack and ask,

“Is everything okay?” he replies in a grim voice,

“Yeah, I'm sure you’ve heard of the attacks on people happening in the city. We are having trouble keeping track of the men who are doing it” just then he gets up and hands me his office card.

“Be sure to call if anything happens” i nod my head and look down at his plate. Holy crap this guy eats fast! We need to be more cautious since there is a detective on the scene… After Jack leaves I see he left a couple bills on the table and to my surprise I see three twenty dollar bills! Oh my god his order was only fifteen, I grabbed the bills and took them to the register, I put the money he owed into the register and stuffed the rest into my pocket. As the day continues on I think about Jack and the fact I have to tell the guys, when I reach over a table to clear it I feel the bills in my pocket and think that he probably left them by accident…. The guilt took over my mind. Right then and there I decide after work I will call him so I can return the money. A few hours pass and my shift is finally over, I let out a high sigh as I clock out. When I leave the cafe from the back entrance I look at my new phone to see five missed calls,

“Holy crap guys!” I quickly looked to see who all called but to my surprise it was all Jax and he only left one voice mail. As I stand behind the cafe I pull up my voicemail and listen to Jax,

“Hey give me a call when you're off, it’s gotten pretty cold out, can't have you getting sick now!” at the end he chuckles and I call him immediately.

“Hey, you said to call when I was off?” I can already see his smile in the back of my mind and he says,

“Yeah, I'm on my way!” and he hangs up. I make my way around the front of the cafe and wait for Jax to pull up in his dull blue car, as I am standing there I am thinking about how to go about telling him

“Hey there is a detective chasing after us!” with that thought Jax pulled around the corner. As i hop into the car Jax is turning up the radio, when i shut the door i find myself suddenly talking in a loud voice “Hey we all need to get together and talk” I pause for a moment and speak up once again “We have a huge problem with our mission tomorrow” I look at my hands laying in my lap when we drive back to the factory. When we come up to the homemade gate hidden behind some trees I get out and pull it open so he can pull into the yard and shut it close behind. When we walk into the factory and see everyone is already waiting for us, Sam calls over to me and Jax,

“Hey come one guys we need to finalize the plans for tomorrow night!” and I jog my way over to the papers laid out on the table and say,

“I really need to look into some lock for this place” Sam just gives me a rude glance and picks up some papers revealing the map. While I am looking at the escape map I start to talk out loud “We need to have a backup escape plan, I have a feeling we’ll be getting a guest” with that Sam, Kye and Spek just look at me “I found out there is a detective looking into our business. He got transferred from another state so he must be good” they all just nod. I suddenly think of a plan and blurt it out “If we start to get caught and chased by car how about we all get out of the car and make our way back to the edge of our hideout, but we should take our time to go through the alleys as much as we can'' they all continue nodding. We all start planning our escape routes and agree on the new plans, when we finish it’s almost midnight and I let out a deep yawn. Kye asks me if I want to spend the night to get a better night's sleep and I agree seeing as I have the day off tomorrow because I know we will wind up playing some video games. We all head our separate ways and I jump into Kye’s black truck to find a small bag of chocolates sitting on the dashboard. When Kye gets into the car I give him a suggestive look “got a hot girlfriend you plan to give those to?” I said in a joking voice. For a moment he stays silent so i punch him on the shoulder,

“Hey i was only joking please don’t hate me!” with that comment he looks up and in his small soft voice says

“No, i don’t have a girlfriend and yes they’re for someone hot” he proceeds to grab the bag of chocolates and throws them into my lap. I quickly cover my red face and we start driving to his house in silence, once we pull into the driveway I open the bag of chocolate and there is a note inside. The note says “Don’t screw up tomorrow” and that’s it…. I take a bite of the chocolate and punch Kye in the shoulder again

“I won’t mess up! Meanie” he just smiles and slips out of the truck, I quickly follow after and head inside. I look around the living room and see everything the same way as always, I plop down on the brown couch in front of the tv and pat the spot next to me. After Kye notices he sits down and grabs a remote connected to his console and I pick up mine. After about four hours of playing video games we decide to go to sleep, after Kye goes to his room I cover myself with a few throw blankets and fall fast asleep.
